fun with titles #4

The Charm Beneath - How does TVB expect us to see the charm beneath when all the actresses have tons of make-up caked onto their faces? A bigger question is would we really want to see what's beneath the charm?

The Last Breakthrough - The only breakthrough from this series is that TVB managed to portray another race is a true light. But the fact that it's the "last" one makes me wonder whether it's back to racist jokes and stereotypes again...

Just Love - Is it really just love? I thought it was just Jessica Hsuan from the amount of screentime and focus on her.

At Point Blank - It's indeed point blank for this series. What's the point? Ah - it's blank. All this time I though the point was a void, but it turns out that TVB intended it to be blank!

[Feeling rather "obliged", now, to comment. haha j/k]

You've effectively integrated the different facets of "charm", with the two questions posed. :P Assuming you've seen the series, would you say it'd be more appropriately titled "Beneath the Charm" or the current one? I haven't seen the series, and am wondering if the characterization is worth the watch.

Just Love - I heard its first (unofficial) English title was "My Wife, Your Honor". That would have been a far better name. Witty and fitting of the storyline. Though, I admit "Just Jessica" would have been proper - a lovely alliteration that illustrates her dominance in the series. :P

The Last Breakthrough - Quite frankly, I failed to pinpoint what exactly was the "breakthrough" in this series; none of the "obstacles" or personal conflicts stood out. It appeared to be a lot of subplots weaved together without a strong, central focus. The landscape and works of LifeForce are admirable, nonetheless, but such a poorly written ending! There was no breakthrough (much less the "last"), but rather, a continuing problem fighting to be "solved".

At Point Blank - Being a Gallen's fan yet haven't seen this series... what a "void" in my life. :P Guess I've always been more attracted to Gallen's dramas instead of comedies.

-lol- For a short feature, my comments are anything but!

I highly encourage you to watch "The Charm Beneath!" Best series of 2005 for sure. Without it, I don't think 2005 would have had any memorable series. The characterizations are excellent and the storyline is wonderful. Great acting and superb chemistry! Watch it or I'll hunt you down now that I know your name. =P

In regards to the title, before watching the series, I would have rather it be "Beneath The Charm" because it's a more meaningful and thoughtful title. The series is about cosmetics ("charm") and I was hoping it would reveal the evil/flaws behind humanity. Unfortunately, it was more of a family drama. So I don't think "Beneath The Charm" would fit anymore. "The Charm Beneath" also isn't suitable. *Shrug*

"The Last Breakthrough" was quite good for the first 2/3 of the series. But the remaining 1/3 sucked. =(

Your comments were longer than my feature! Haha.

They do say that "less is more". For certain, it applies here. My question regarding "Beneath the Charm" was wasteful as I've just noticed the series was listed under your favorites. :) Now, let's drag it onto my "to watch" list, which is mounting quickly. I won't ponder more on your chosen adjectives for fear of setting an expectation too high that may result in the equivalence of greeting disappointment. But, I do wonder if a first name is adequate for stalking purposes. :P

"The Last Breakthrough" - ditto.

And for such a long post up there, how did I fail to mention I like this feature of yours? *perplexed* [The fictional satire is still top notch, though ;)] BTW, do one on "Golden Faith". :) I'm still "battling" with the two variations for the meaning of this title. And of course, I wouldn't mind having a humor twist added as the third variation. :P

Audrey - I hope you'll watch it soon so that I can read your thoughts on it. =)

I half-watched "Golden Faith." I felt it was too long and didn't interest me all that much. Initially watched it only to see Bernice Liu's guest star in it and finished it only because I felt obligated to. =P But thanks - I'll consider it.

anonymous - Glad you like it! =D

If by next year, TVB Musings is still around, then I'll share with you my thoughts. :P [Unless the clock magically reveals more than 24 hours per day!]

GF - I have an uncanny empathy toward the characters and somehow relate to Ivan's selfish sacrifices. Acting-wise, I think most actors (definitely not Michelle) delivered a powerful performance. But hah, this is one fan speaking. :P

I find it interesting how we seemingly have very diverse tastes when it comes to series, yet I greatly enjoy your musings shared here. Perhaps it's the different perception that intrigues. :) [And bien sur, much is due to your "signature writing" ;)]

I just knew you were going to use my "signature writing" against me. :P

I think it's a good chance that this blog will be around for as long as TVB shall live. I am paying for the server to keep VOH alive and you know I won't ever give up my VOH sites. ;) So this blog will definitely be around. Plus I like being able to vent my built-up opinions. Besides, my VOH sites have been around for 4 years and going. So you don't have to worry about me giving up and closing shop.

No, I can never doubt your dedication and loyalty to VOH, and this blog. :)

Which hosting company are you with, btw? [Am unsatisfied with my current one and want to explore other options. :)]

I'm using Honest Networks. They're efficient and cost-friendly. :) http://www.honestnetworks.com/

Thanks, Metal. :) I like the "honest" factor, but am afraid they don't offer enough storage. Shall continue searching...

Wow, how much storage do you need? I have like 6 sites on my server and I have 50% more to store. Haha. Good luck with your search though!

I need around 15GB; I simply offer too many high quality clips. :P Have found the right hosting package, but am more than unsatisfied (to put it mildly) with their customer service. In fact, they amaze me at how quickly I can lose my patience with them when I'm generally extremely calm. -lol-
