From The Biter Bitten episode 13

Ah Fung (Benny Chan): I believe that if you have confidence, there's nothing you can't do. What can't be overcome?
Dan Dan (Linda Chung): ... It's like you with your fear of heights. You can't overcome it.
Ah Fung: Says who? If I have confidence and think that I can overcome it, I definitely could overcome it.
Dan Dan: Then do it.
Ah Fung: (Proceeds to climb up a ladder, but can't even make it up one step)
Dan Dan: (Sigh) Let's face the truth. You can't do it. How could I possibly do it?
Ah Fung: (Dismay) I will be able to do it! I'll definitely let you see!

What sticks out with this scene to me is how it's sad, touching, and subtly funny all at once. You feel sorry for Dan Dan with her self-sacrificing decision and despair. You're touched when Ah Fung shows up to support and offer encouraging words to the sorrowful Dan Dan. You root for Ah Fung to cheer Dan Dan up. But then - Dan Dan counters his words and makes him do what he preached. You can see the yearning in her eyes - hoping that Ah Fung will be able to overcome his fear of heights to validate what he told her. When he fails to do so, you can just feel the disappointment in her voice. Poor Ah Fung was so sure that he would be able to make Dan Dan happy again with his words, but too bad the scene concludes with him watching Dan Dan run away...
How is this scene the least bit funny? The irony of the dialogue/situation. Ah Fung tries so hard to persuade Dan Dan that if she has faith, she can do anything. What a cliché, right? The irony comes when Dan Dan challenges Ah Fung's encouragement instead of going along with it and proves (even though she didn't want to disprove him) that what he said is in fact not true. Just because you think you can doesn't always mean that you really can. So take the lesson from this scene - if you offer someone support/encouragement, make sure you can follow up on what you tell him or her!

Lol. It's funny only subtly and only because it was ironic. I explained the irony in the last paragraph of the post. Indeed it is a sad and touching scene but it has a slightly humorous undertone because Benny failed to prove that "if you have confidence, you can do anything" (which is a cliched encouragement). Hope you get it now. :P

Sigh.
Metal finds humor in everything eh? Or maybe Im humorless...I must watch this series.....heheh...wait for my opinions! :P

Humor has many forms; one of which is irony. As the scene is ironic, we equate it to being 'humorous'. That's all. :)
Metal - I've always been curious... What about "Virtues of Harmony" that attracts your attention and sustains such loyalty from you? [I know this is irrelevant to your current entry, but I didn't want to take up the tagboard's space, and posting a comment in an older albeit relevant entry would have been ignored, which it was. :P]

I'm just wondering if you're the same anonymous who comments each time?
Anyways, I will do a full-length feature on why I love VOH so much coming soon. All your questions and curiosity shall be answered then. :)

Do you think I'd answer your question when my nick clearly shows I desire anonymity? -lol- j/k Yes, I reply quite often to your entries. But I can think of two instances in which the anon wasn't me.
Will be looking forward to your VOH analysis!

Lol. I hope with time you'll choose to gain an identity so I'll know it's "you" when you comment or shout something. :P

I'd like to be identified by my words, not a name for... "what's in a name"? haha. No, I wish not to impersonate Shakespeare.
Greetings Metal, I am Audrey. :)
23.5.06
Wow! Can't believe I was able to persuade you to adopt a name. :) Nice to "meet" you.
23.5.06
-lol- Do I strike you as someone stubborn and hard to persuade? :P
Likewise, a true pleasure to be acquainted with your musings! :)
24.5.06
Haha you seemed quite determined to remain "anonymous." I'm happy you found your way to my blog and hope you will continue to stick around!

Isn't it Tan Tan, that's her name in my movie translation, not Dan Dan.

Minx, pinyin is totally subjective. Both are correct. As long as the pinyin sounds like the Chinese pronunciation, then it will not be considered wrong. I prefer Dan Dan. :P
