programme highlights '06 - issue iv

The fourth and final issue for this year of TVB's Programme Highlights has been released. Much thanks to TVFANSQUARE for scanning it and sharing the booklet with all of us! As stated in July, I'll be discussing each issue of the Programme Highlights and expressing my thoughts on them as they come. Because of my pervasive indifference towards most of the series included in this issue, I'm going to be doing this feature a bit differently this time around.

When will they be out already?!
I am not interested in what TVB has to offer lately, so I'm dying waiting for the following series to release.

  • Heavenly In-Laws (Nancy Sit, Joey Leung, Linda Chung, etc.)
I'm suffering from L.C.W.D. (Linda Chung Withdrawal Disorder). I swear TVB is torturing me by making Linda Chung film all these series and not releasing any of them in the longest time! I haven't seen Linda since Forensic Heroes and I really miss watching her act. She is so charming and just makes my day. There are two new pictures of Linda in this issue and she looks real cute. My anticipation continues to build as my neck grows long awaiting Heavenly In-Laws' release. This is Linda's first costume drama, so I hope she does well. I was looking at old TVB Weekly scans from during its filming and Linda's expressions and looks for Heavenly are super adorable. Apparently, Linda's character (who is a goddess) wants to re-enact Ngau Long and Jik Lui because she is so moved by their romantic story. Of course, since this is a comedy, things won't be so idyllic.

The series starts off in ancient costumes (since Nancy Sit & Linda are mother/daughter goddesses) and will then proceed to mid 1900's as the two of them live life as mortals... Linda falls in love with Joey Leung's character, but Nancy greatly opposes this couple. I think this series should be entertaining albeit cliché and not very different or breakthrough. I hope Linda will show continued improvement in this series. I've grown a lot fonder of Heavenly since last time and just hope TVB will release it soon!

  • The Price of Greed (Bosco Wong, Sammul Chan, etc.)
My reasons for anticipating this series remains unchanged.

  • Brink of Law (Steven Ma, Ron Ng, Bernice Liu, etc.)
I fell in love with this series since the costume fitting. Producer Mui Siu Ching always picks the best people and yes, since this is her production, I am confident that Brink of Law will be excellent. How awesome does the poster look?! This series will revolve around business, horse racing, and fashion. True to Producer Mui's style, I'm sure that this will essentially be a family drama (and I love those) with lots of twists and turns. The cast looks so good. It's always interesting and fascinating to watch dramas about rich people. Steven Ma and Bernice Liu look so good together and I have confidence that they (like Frankie Lam and Linda Chung in Forensic Heroes) will have chemistry. It's so nice how the Virtues of Harmony "partners swap" is working wonderfully, creating great new pairings. I haven't seen Bernice in so long, so I miss her. I hope her acting has improved because Bernice has always been a little shaky with dramatic roles. She's fine in comedies and light dramas, but not so good in heavy dramas. Michelle Yim is consistently superb, so I hope they will put her talents to good use in this series. I'm okay with Ron Ng and Kate Tsui.

The only drawback to this series is... Shirley Yeung. There's always a drawback, isn't there? Just when everything is so right, there's that one that ruins everything. Shirley's terrible in her normal roles when she "acts" like herself (loud, stubborn, obnoxious). How bad is it going to be now that they're forcing her to really "act" as a villain?! I don't even want to begin imagining. I'm hoping that whoever made this pamphlet made a mistake because there is no way that Shirley is leading over Bernice (nor Kate for that matter). I will just have to live with her in this and hope she doesn't ruin the series too much.

All in all, I cannot wait for Brink. It is tied with Heavenly In-Laws as my most highly anticipated release out of the series included in this issue.

Standing in the middle of two roads
These are the series that I cannot make up my mind whether I'm going to watch or skip. I'm very picky and thrift with my TVB rentals (especially these days since I have limited time), so I cannot afford to watch any mediocre or bad series. The following series are ones that attract me in some ways, but repulse me in another, so I'm stuck with indecisiveness.

  • Dicey Business (Bobby Au-Yeung, Jessica Hsuan, Bosco Wong, etc.)
What in the world was TVB thinking when they created this poster? It is so cartoon-ish and to be blunt, down right appalling! Many people are wondering if this series is really a "drama" because the looks for the characters are a bit too "animated." Bobby Au-Yeung with his fake pot belly? Bosco Wong with his hair and glasses? Tavia Yeung with her fake breasts? But then, the fact that Hacken Lee is singing the themesong, the fact that it's a grand production, the premise of gambling, and the title suggesting a "turbulent casino" make this series seem like a true drama?

Does TVB want us to take this series seriously or what? I have no idea! I'm not a big fan of gambling series and from what I've read/seen, Dicey Business isn't all that appealing to me. However, I do have to admit that I am very attracted to Tavia's image for Dicey. She looks really good! Whether or not I watch this series will depend on reviews and when I get a better idea of what this series is truly about.

  • To Grow With Love (Myolie Wu, Andy Hui, Selena Li, etc.)
Initially, I was attracted to this series because it looked quite cute and funny. Sadly, I've been hearing that it's silly and over-hyped, so this has turned me off. I also found out that To Grow With Love's producer also did War of In-Laws (which I hated), so I'm skeptical about whether I will enjoy his attempt at a modern romantic comedy about the struggles of fat people. I have to say I am in love with the songs from this series though. I haven't completely crossed it off the list yet though, so we'll just have to wait and see.

  • Glittering Days (Liza Wang, Roger Kwok, Charmaine Sheh, etc.)
I'm not into musicals and Glittering Days seems a bit long and silly to me. However, since it is a grand production and an anniversary series at that, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. TVB won't put so much backing into such a series, right?

    No light of day
These are the series that I'm going to pass on - no doubt about it.

  • Devil's Disciples (Kevin Cheng, Bosco Wong, Bernice Liu, etc.)
Since Jin Yong no longer lets TVB adapt his novels, where do they turn to for wuxia ideas? Why, video games of course! Devil's Disciples is based on a video game, which explains its heavily computerized dependence. It's a recipe for disaster. The costumes are a big turn off as well. Kevin Cheng, Sharon Chan, and Shirley Yeung are even bigger turn off's. What a pity for me in regards to Bernice Liu - this is her first leading role, her first martial arts role, and the first time she's pairing with an actor around her age (Bosco Wong)... and I'm going to miss it all. I'd rather watch Face to Fate before this series.

  • At Home With Love (Lawrence Ng, Yoyo Mung, Chung King Fai, etc.)
It changed its poster since the last programme highlights issue, but my thoughts are still in agreement with four months ago. I am not watching this series for the same reasons as stated before.

So... which series are you most looking forward to? What are you going to watch or skip and why?

My first question is: when will Maggie Cheung re-appear? Or has she decided to leave the entertainment circle? :(

Brink of Law - I can't figure out where the "law" lies in this series, but the poster looks edible. :P I can complain about Ron, but I won't because *opens mouth wide* he seems to have a different style/look. The glasses and facial expression so unRon, and I'm loving it. :P [Hopefully, the motion picture is as promising.] And you know, I actually think Shirley is better than Kate. :P Shirley's bad, but Kate's just... Kate can't cry at all, or frown for that matter (referencing LFD).

Dicey Biz - Seems to me they're trying to imitate the feel of Las Vegas, without the lights and glamour. Eh... a more deserted Las Vegas (after all, LV is located in a desert). It's unattractive at first, but shows a certain level of creativity and realism. The lighting is good as well - a nice contrast of colors. I think the worst poster award should go to "To Grow With Love" :P

skipped At Home With Love, halfway thru To Grow With Love (planning to stop watching cause it's getting... sillier), anticipating The Brink of Law (i like the producer too but i agree that shirley is like one of the drawbacks of this series). will watch a few eps of Dicey Business to see how it's like cause i hear the producer's past series were never that good.

and i never knew Devil's DIsciples is based on a video game :p

o.O yes I agree that the poster of "the brink of law" is absolutely awesome! Unlike you I do like fantasy/wuxia stories. I enjoyed FTF, and I'll also be anticipating DD, maybe because I like producer Lau Ka Ho (up till now, i really liked TGC and WRTL), and because I do wanto see what kind of series can be made out of a video game. Haha...

    Anw, nice analysis! (:

it's ironic how Dicey Busines trailers look so intense and serious but the poster looks so cartoonist but like tnk said, the poster does look realistic and creative in a way.

    Im definitely going to skip:
At home with Love - i think this is going to be a typical series
To Grow with Love - though i like Myolie, this series is just isn'tfor me
Devil's Disciple - im not a fan of martial arts
Heavenly In Laws - uhh it is kinda remind me of Scavenger Paradise again

Well Like I said Glittering Days looks somewhat exaggerated to me but im kinda still hoping that it will turn out good, so I'm gonna give it a try

I think Think Brink of Law, Dicey Business and Price of Greed will not dissapoint me so I'm gonna watch them

Gotta say "The Brink of Law" poster just looks so hot! And the fact that is 25 episodes makes me wanna watch it more because I usually skip series that are 20eps(not that I choose to but because series that I don't like usually fall into the 20 eps ones) lolz.

Tai Chi and Dicey Business are my top choice. Least favorite have to be Heavenly-in-Law. And obviously, you & me have a different taste in series.

Oh beside, you love all the series that have Linda Chung, whether good or bad. ;)

I think The Master of Tai Chi will not be out until much later in 2007, though I'm very ancipating for that series as well. I just love Rayolie hehe.

I'm watching all of them, but I know I'm going to quit on some of them *cough*At Home with Love, To Grow With Love, Devil's Disciples*cough*

    wow, that's a long cough.

    My Most Anticipated list(in order):
    1. Price of Greed(evil sam n super hot Bosco)
    2. Brink of Law(despite Ron and Kate, altho I think Ron has improved much now)
    3. Dicey Business(What kind of a name is that? Casino Crisis, sounds better, reminds me of Risky Business or better yet Munky Business)
    4. Heavenly In-Laws(looks so cute)
    5. Glittering Days(eww. singing, but there's Charm)

To Grow With Love looks like the wannabe-funny-n-cute-but-is-totally-childish kind of series. At Home with Love is just boring. I'm not really into the kunfu stuff and all the special effects make me dizzy so Devil's Disciple's don't look appealing

But I'm still waiting for some series to be released in Viet, so it'll be so long till I get to watch these.

The reason why Bernice can't really act in heavy serious role is because she's very funny! She cannot act too serious as u can see her character is liddat, hyperactive....funky.

As of right now, the only series I'm really anticipating is Dicey Business (aka Casino Crisis) mostly because of the cast. The hype that I've seen of it makes the series sound pretty attractive to me. And of course, it helps that I'm a big Bosco Wong fan. =D

As for other series, To Grow With Love, I've heard some bad reviews about it, but interested in seeing how Myolie pulls off her character, so I'll watch it. Price of Greed sounds like something I would like to watch, but not a big fan of drama-ish series, and not a fan of either Shirley nor Kate. If I watch it, it'll be for the guys. =P

Devil's Disciple, despite how unattractive the whole concept and physical appearance is, is a martial arts type series, and I like those. Also, I've recently been interested in seeing a Bosco/Bernice pairing, and I've always wanted to see Bernice in a martial arts series because of her background in kick-boxing, or whatever it is that she does. I remember watching an interview of Bernice saying that she wants to try her talents at a wuxia series. Hopefully even if the concept is not the greatest, Bosco and Bernice will not disappoint. So I'll be watching this series even if it's really horrible.

At Home with Love and Glittering Days are both definitely no go's, period. lol The Brink of Law and Heavenly In Laws I'm still undecided.

Will look forward to "dicey business" and "brink of law"...and also "to grow with love" because I'm curious.
Will probably skip "heavenly in-laws" and "devil's disciples"

Definitely skipping At Home With Love - no second though whatsoever.

The Heavenly series...most likely I'll skip it unless it's greatly reviewed...Nancy's series are usually too preachy...Linda has never impressed me as an actress...Joey...havent seen much of his works.

Highly anticipating Glittering Days..it'll be nice to see Charmaine stuttering at first..and then singing and dancing on stage...
Price of Greed looks great...but not a fan of Bosco and isnt that Kate on the poster? Not a fan either..
Also anticipating Devil's Disciples and Brink of Law

Wow! I'm really surprised at how many comments this post got. Hehe. Seems like you guys enjoy the TVB Programme Highlights and reading my thoughts. :) Too bad there's only 4 of these a year. LOL.

TkN - Maggie is currently enjoying her rest and herself living a "normal" life without the media hounding around her. For her sake, I'm grateful. I think it will be a long time until Maggie comes back to act (for TVB especially). :( However, acting is her passion, so I'm sure she can't stay away for too long.

I definitely agree that To Grow With Love's poster is horrible. It's so ugly!

anon - Do you know exactly what past series Dicey Business's producer did?

djfrostbite - Oh my god! Is Lau Ka Ho the producer of Devil's Disciple?! I'm in shock...

triumph2004 - LOL. Then it's a good thing that Producer Mui now opts for 25/30 ep series rather than her standard 20 in the past. :P

    tle04 - I'm not that biased. :P

loony - Yay we're skipping the same series. ;)

lily - I know! Argh. Shirley is in 3 series. =X

anonymous - That's true, but the mark of a great actress is versatibility. I've always thought Bernice has the face of one of those people in soap operas. :P But she conveys a very homey, sitcom-ish aura.

ani - Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

doozy - Hehe maybe I can convince you to watch Heavenly In-Laws when I do all those posts on it when it releases. :P

JJ - Haha such a biased Charmaine fan. ;)

only a few of my favorites series fall into the 20-22 eps such as La Femme Desperado, Return of the Cuckoo, etc. hehe

Awakening story has 30eps or 20eps? I forgot but i like that series too.

OMG that's the first thing I thought too. I marvelled at the poster and then I was like, Oh no, Shirley. And about the Dicey Business poster - I was so disappointed in it as well. It's suposed to be an anniversary series, right? I thought this poster as something like a street in a messed up community... Still going to watch it though, since it seems pretty interesting. I'm going to watch Devil's Disciples though. For Bernice Liu. =) I dislike Kevin and Shirley, but Bernice looks so good in this... As for At Home With Love, I am highly pleased with the poster change. I hated the old one. =P And from back then til now, my views on the main leads have changed for the better, so I'm going to watch this one.

triumph2004 - Um, Mui Siu Ching didn't produce Hard Fate. That was from Amy Wong (Under the Canopy of Love). LOL. It's an average of the two. The Awakening Story had 25 eps. ;)

anonymous #2 - Dicey Business was slated to be an anniversary series, but that changed... it is just a series that happens to air during/after anniversary time without the official anniverary title.

gk - It's okay. Everyone has different tastes. :)
