the dry spell/at the lowest point

Since Love Guaranteed released in July, something happened to TVB. What started out as a relatively breakthrough year for TVB turned bland and sour quickly. The buzz wore off. TVB became mediocre and uneventful again. TVB is currently in a state of dry spell and has been so for the last six months.
TVB is so drab and uninteresting right now. Big hits of quality like The Dance of Passion, La Femme Desperado, and Forensic Heroes that dominated the first half of the year are nowhere to be found. Instead, TVB keeps releasing one "filler" series after another. Ratings and series discussions have also been stale, reflecting the dry spell.
The 2006 "anniversary" series selections have been the worst in years. In the past, series such as Country Spirit and A Step Into The Past were given the prestigious "anniversary series" title. They were truly special grand productions with plenty of merit. This year, sadly, TVB picked To Grow With Love and Glittering Days. Two comedies? You have to be kidding me. Glittering was an understandable selection because it is a grand production, musical-based series with Liza Wang, Roger Kwok, and Charmaine Sheh leading, but Grow? The series was half-baked to begin with, but with TVB rushing it to release it as an "anniversary series" made matters even worse. I really hated the two series that TVB picked to represent its 39th year and for the first time, I'm not going to be watching either anniversary series. [Last year, among the anniversary series, I skipped Life Made Simple and Real Kung Fu and only watched The Charm Beneath - which was also arguably 2005's best series.]
Now, in this post-anniversary period, where TVB expects ratings to be low, what do they air? Two long series! Dicey Business has 35 episodes and The Conquest has 42 episodes. Dicey won't finish airing until January and Conquest doesn't conclude until February. I don't have anything against these two series, but the fact that they won't finish airing for a "long time" just makes me groan. It makes the wait even longer for series that I'm anticipating.
Right now, my interest in TVB is at its lowest point ever. I find myself being so bored with TVB. It's not exciting anymore and I'm not engrossed in any series. I'm watching War and Destiny and Face to Fate, but I'm not enjoying either very much. I suppose it's because I'm not crazy about any of the cast members of either series. I'm so unimpressed by TVB as of late. Perhaps I'm being too cynical and demanding... but TVB is not pushing the right buttons for me at this point.
War started off quite good and interesting. However, the novelty wore off. I find it to be dragging. I have a little more than ten episodes to go and it is a little better now with everyone returning to Nanjing. The war scenes were disappointing. They just showed a bunch of people getting killed and attacked without really explaining what was going on. The scenes with the "Koo" family in the village were so boring and clichéd. In fact, War in itself is predictable. I don't find anything really surprising.
I am so sick of Ron Ng declaring over and over again about how he's not Japanese and for extra effect, he's always destroying something. The role could have proved to be interesting if only someone more competent had acted it. Instead, we have Ron who can't seem to make any expressions at all. Is he even alive? He looks so stoned and dead all the time. His limited expressions are so predictable and unnatural and his character is frustrating because it's once again a hot-tempered, immature one. Then we have Myolie Wu, who is acting so mechanically and insincerely. She cries over and over again - we get it, you can cry. I dislike her character as well. She's way too nice and self-sacrificing that it's fake. I also find it absurd how she is so against Sunny Chan's character and yet expects him to help her over and over again. It is so frustrating watching her. TVB claims that "Ping On" is their version of "Jang-geum" (from Korean mega-drama Jewel in the Palace)... please. It doesn't even come close. "Jang-geum" was someone you could root for and love because she was genuinely human; "Ping On" is someone you want to slap and tell her to wake up and live in reality. Mandy Cho tries to be all "mysterious" that I can't help but laugh. Her singing scenes are a joke. She looks pretty in those Japanese costumes, though. She has improved, but...
The only good people in War are Sunny, Angelina Lo, Lau Dan, Leila Tong, and Charmaine Li. Sunny is so good in War. I love his character. He's someone that's real and fascinating. It is so refreshing to see Angelina play an "evil" role and she does it just as well as her warm, funny motherly roles. It's great that they gave her more layers as the series progressed. Lau Dan is perhaps my favorite veteran actor. No matter if it's as an antagonist or a protagonist, he continues to be great. I used to love Leila when she had those small roles in series. I remember seeing her in Good Against Evil as Deric Wan's little sister. I was thinking how incredibly cute she was and was happy when she got bigger roles in series. However, the love died and I became neutral. War has made me like her again. She is quite pretty in this and her role is interesting as well. Charmaine Li really impressed me since she made her first appearance in War. I was shocked to see that she really does resemble Sheren Tang at certain angles. She is quite good and I definitely like her role. She acts out as a plead for attention and love.
I don't even know why I'm watching Fate. I made it very clear that I was going to "skip" it many times because I am appalled by the atrocious costumes and I've made up my mind to skip all wuxia series from TVB. However, I kept reading how everyone thinks it's so good, so I had to watch it and see what the hype was all about. I may be stubborn, but I won't let a series get away if it really is good. I don't like Fate. I'm up to episode 5 now and it still hasn't clicked with me. The costumes are so appalling and the storyline doesn't interest me. However, I find Frankie Lam's "future foreseeing" ability to be quite cool and fascinating. Sadly, his performance has reverted to being "boring" and "scholarly" again. Raymond Lam's character and his "miracle healing" skills are also cool. I'm not into fantasy and the costumes make the series look so unattractive and ridiculous. However, I will continue to watch because I have the whole series already even though I'm not exactly liking it. Hopefully it will get better now that Selena Li's character has appeared...
Between War and Fate, I enjoy War more. However, the pace at which I'm watching both are so slow. I can't bring myself to watch them simply because I'm not intrigued by either. I feel like my time is better spent rewatching episodes of Virtues of Harmony that I've seen a million times already.
Perhaps I'm feeling so iffy about TVB now because I'm genuinely not very interested in anything that it has to offer lately. A big part of this lies in the fact that none of the series that have released have any of my favorites in them - in particular Linda Chung. I miss her so much. Out of all the series that have released from July to now, I'm skipping all of them besides War and Destiny, Face to Fate, Land of Wealth, and Dicey Business. That's four series out of ten. Everything else feels so "filler" and bland to me, so I won't be wasting my time or money. [Actually, I'm thinking twice about Wealth right now. The reviews aren't that great and ratings were low. The series just looks so attractive and "grand" to me that it would be a shame if I end up skipping it since I anticipated it so much. However, I really don't want to watch a dragging and not-so-good series. Any thoughts, anyone?]
I feel so dispassionate about watching TVB these days. 2007 - please come quickly and save TVB from its dry spell. I have a lot of faith in many series that will release next year. Brink of Law is slated to be the first release of 2007, so I think it will be able to rescue TVB and make it luscious and vibrant again. Until then, I will continue to find myself feeling so disappointed and indifferent towards TVB. I feel like giving a big "sigh" when it comes to TVB right now.
Does anyone else feel the drab heat of TVB's excessively long dry spell?

it took me longer to finish tvb series nowadays althought i've managed to watch most of 06 series so far. FH, LFD, and CIB only took me a few days however. It seems like the series that i want to be longer are not and via versa :).

Hey Metal...you do notice by now that I only leave comments when I disagree haha - I love posts like this!
Reading your whole commentary, it seems to me what you care most for is the cast - you repetitively say how new releases don't have your favorite artists and etc. With me, I really don't care much about the casts...and as long as it's TVB artists lol.
Anyway...really you should give series a chance before deciding whether to watch it or skip it. A lot of people like Face to Facte, but apparently you don't, so obviously reviews don't necessarily work for you. Therefore, perhaps you should just rent the first few episodes of series to try them...you just never know!
With that being said, give Glittering Days a chance! I didnt expect to like it either, and was only goin to watch it for Charmaine and Sharon...but I find myself liking the first episode already while Charmaine did not appear until the end of the second episode. It's not a bad series...and I think it's a good choice for an anniversary series...it's doing pretty well in terms of ratings also...even better than some anniversary series in the past (Country Spirit only averaged at about 30 I believe).
And whatever happen to your anticipation for Land of Wealth? I remember seeing a banner of it for your site and everything...and all of sudden to seem be way less interested in it?
Maybe I'm not a picky TVB fan...but I thought this year is far better than 2005...with only Strike At Heart, Charm Beneath, Yummy Yummy, Misleading Track, and Revolving Doors of Vengeance been enjoyable enough...at least TVB is improving a bit haha...it's all about improvement. 2007 sure looks great!

haha, I gave up on WAD; the acting turned me off minutes into the series. You have patience, my friend. :)
As for "To Grow With Love", a friend of mine in Philippines kept complaining they don't portray the region accurately. I don't have much interest in the production either, and with her constant bad reports, there's no hope for it to grace my TV screen. Originally, I didn't plan on seeing "Glittering Days" but my sister informed Charmaine's acting improved, so I may catch it for myself. Despite her having won "Best Actress", she has yet made it on my 'favorable' list (though her performance in Maidens' Vow was commendable).
And what a coincidence, I'm also at episode 5 of Fate. I don't have the urge to continue, but I will because, like you, I've read one too many good reviews. It certainly helps that I'm a Ray fan :P His character in here is refreshing.
Land of Wealth, I've finished. It's not exactly what I expected, but nonetheless, captured my attention till the end. There wasn't a "bang", a climax to the plot. The development may be slow, even. But somehow, LOW managed to seem very real to me. The characterization, I give two thumbs up (aside from Steven Ma's character). John Chiang certainly got the most honorable role and he depicted it well. [I admire and adore his character more so than Tim Sir in FH.] Acting-wise, Sonija improved beyond my imagination. Moses impressed at first, but as the story goes on, he lost my interest. Steven, I remain indifferent. Tavia was beautiful and consistent in her portrayal. Of the four leads, she got the least screening time, but to me, gave the deepest impact. [Perhaps, less is more.]
Well, back to studying I go. Unlike you, I still have one more final to take, tallying a total of five. Seriously, college is soooo overrated! lol.

I enjoyed War and Destiny especially because of Sunny, Leila and her relationship with Ron.
Sunny and Myolie's relationship is cute too.
Eventhough, I like Leila more than Sunny but I like Sunny's role in here more than her's.
I thought Ron and Mandy have improved a bit in this serie. But, he definitely needs to work on his acting more.
Shek Sau is a veteran (sp?) actor, but I find his performance in most of the serie is average.
Yep, Lau Dan and Angelina Lo acted well for their role.
Charmaine Li has improved too, but I find it's a bit annoying the way she talks. It looks like there is something in her mouth.
I also enjoyed War and Destiny more than Fate to Face too. Frankie acted pretty well in his two last series with TVB: Forensic Heroes and Face to Fate.
I had anticipated "Land of Wealth" too for its casts and especially for Sonija and Moses, Tavia and Steven. But, after I watched the 1st espisode, I was disappointed.
What I did was, I skipped most of the beginning one and watched the last few espisodes of the serie.
When I have nothing to do, I might go back and watch from the beginning again.
War and Destiny and Land of Wealth have one thing in common so far is the slow beginning part.
Right now, I am waiting to watch Dicey Business and To Grow with Love. But, I heard not so good reviews about To Grow With Love.
However, I still want to check it out anyways, because Myolie looks very cute as chubby and I want to see Kenneth Ma, Eddie Kwan, and Jack Wu.

I thought you wouldn't enjoy FTF or WAD. FTF was good at the beginning however the last half sucked. I finished this it solely because of Selena Li who is improving immensely. I have a gut feeling you won't like TC too. I am only on episode 10 of LOW and I like it. Maybe I should comment after I'm done? I am not looking forward to any of the 2007 drama not even Jewel’s Spendor. :( Anyways, you can always re-watch or buy old series. ;)

If u love watching a series where the third party and boyfriend stealer actually gets to keep the guy and has a happy ending. Go ahead and watch To Grow With Love.
Read here for a review of To Grow With Love

AngryBaby's review is a bit bias and Myolie's character is not as bad as s/he made out to be personality wise. But the havoc she caused is all true. And Fei Tin (Myolie) is a selfish person (from my POV). Her way of determining her Mr.Right is also stupid.
Before episode 7, her intention was good (although she still caused problems) but started from episode 7 until episode ? (I stop watching already), she has become unreasonable and selfish. She lied to Hei (Andy) and near ruined Hei's relationship with his girlfriend and she has the nerve to be angry and felted wronged by Hei and took her revenge on him when he's vunerable.

Forgot to add. There's spoiler in the review because there's a summary of the plot including the ending.

Metal, have you seen Maiden's Vow? I think it is one of the better series in the second half of the year (at least up till the point I am at now)
And regarding your comment about TVB going downhill, I haven't watched most of the beyond-june series yet (no money? ><), so I don't really know how to comment. But I was a little baffled by your comment about FTF. I enjoyed the first half of the series SO much. I agree with Sere. If you didn't like the first 5 episodes, I can't imagine what you are going to think about the last few episodes. Haha
Whether tvb's standard is dropping or not, I am not sure. I am leaning towards the 'yes' side though. >< Not so much in terms of the cast, but in terms of the storyline. Maybe the screenwriters' creativity has really reached the saturation point. I have no idea...
BUT, I dno if this might help. If you DO stay away from TVB series for quite some time, say one or two months, and then come back to watch it, your interest in TVB might climb up again. Sometimes it's not just the productions themselves, it's also the human mind. After watching too much tvb, we just aren't able to focus anymore, and get bored easily. Stay away for some time, and then come back to it, you might feel totally different. I hope this helps =p
Anw thanks to your enlightenment, I finally revamped my fameless blog here: http://djfrostbite.blogspot.com. Do drop by (:

andy - Yeah... how I wish VOH was longer. :P Then I would never lose faith or interest in TVB. Haha.
JJ - I find that because most TVB plots are not fresh or intriguing to me these days, the cast plays a bigger role than in the past. Before I thought that I could like a series even if I don't like the cast, but with the state of TVB today, it's not the case.
And uh, I think you misread. I did watch FTF and am unimpressed as of now. I highly anticipated LOW, but poor reviews caused me to lose faith...
TkN - Good luck with your final. :) Hmm... I think you should give WAD another shot. *Sigh* I just find FTF to be too ridiculous and I don't see a point in it just yet.
hithere05 - My thoughts on WAD were premature. I like it now. Haha. Oh no... another bad LOW review. :(
sere - I'm just not into the whole wuxia/fantasy genre. I feel the good vs. evil battle to be too overplayed. The special effects are horrid and the costumes... I hope I will like TC.
kidd - Yeah, I read your post on SPCNET. "Fei Tin" sounds so horrible. Definitely not someone to root for. :P
frostbite - I was going to watch MV because the synopsis made it sound so attractive, but then decided not to because after glancing through the first episode, it seems too clichéd and I'm not a big fan of Joe or Charmaine either. *Shrug* Maybe I will catch it when I am bored or have nothing else to watch but 30 episodes is long.
18.12.06
metal, 30+ eps is too long for you? Wait till the coming 60 eps and 80 eps one next year. (ha...ha..., just kidding). Take a break. I guess u r overloaded w/ tvb.
18.12.06
Lol..u misread Metal..I said that you are watching F2F becuz you heard good reviews..but then you're not liking it..so perhaps reviews aren't necessarily right for you...so I was suggesting maybe you should try watching a bit of everything to test it out yourself.
19.12.06
shaw - Lol, it's too long because there's no one I like in it. :P I'm not afraid of "long" series at all as long as it is good and has a cast that I like.
19.12.06
In fact,I enjoyed War and Destiny very much and everyone gave it good reviews. I do feel a little of the dry spell as what you described, but I have a little to comment on Linda. She's way too over-promoted and she will have 4 series airing in 2007! that's a lot and you do not expect to see Linda in almost every series? I guess most of us will begin to get tired of her. Her exposure is already very high in terms for a newcomer, dude. Face To Fate in my opinion is a good series, not as bad as you described. You need to carry on watching both of them to understand the essence within.

Great article! Thanks.
