a comedic "heart of greed"

The 2007 grand production Heart of Greed started off shaky, but gradually kept increasing and gaining buzz. In the last half of the series, it was the hottest series to hit in a long time. TVB finally had another big hit in their hands. Ratings were no longer in a slump. Everyone was chatting about it and the cast all got nice boosts in popularity (besides a certain someone). Ultimately, ratings peaked with an impressive high of 48 pts (3.1 million viewers).
TVB announced that they would film another series with Heart's cast to reunite everyone in hopes of another hot series.
It was revealed on May 31st by Louis Yuen in Moses Chan and Linda Chung's chat room session with fans that the entire cast hoped to film a comedy. Moses and Linda both thought it was a really good idea. In today's news, TVB revealed that the new series would have a completely new storyline in a different genre. This confirms that TVB plans to film a grand production comedy.
It's been years since TVB has done a grand production comedy. These days, there are no longer series like A Recipe for the Heart, Happy Ever After, The Legendary Four Aces, and so on. Comedies these days are low-budget with only a few A-list names in the main roles. Only grand production dramas get big A-list cast members.
I love the idea of a comedic Heart. TVB is producing too many grand production dramas these days. The Brink of Law, Dicey Business, The Drive of Life, The Gem of Life... does the audience really need any more big-budget dramas? There's only so much "rich people fighting" storylines and drama that can be created before it gets tiring. After the 60-episode Drive and 80-episode Gem, I think the audience will feel oversaturated with heavy drama. It's time for a change - bring back the grand production comedies!
Besides, if the Heart cast and crew did a drama again, it might seem repetitive and bore the audience. Also, everyone would be comparing the two. It just would be a bad idea.
The cast of Heart is my favorite A-list cast that TVB has put together, so I am thrilled everyone is going to be reunited for a new series. Everyone seems to get along really well and have great chemistry together. They just elicit a very warm feeling and the acting is spectacular. Everyone in Heart cried so much and went through so much drama. A comedy from them would be very refreshing and I think it will also be a hit.
Now, will it be modern or ancient?
I think it can go either way.
If it's modern, I think it would be perfect if TVB did a version of the 10-years-running American classic sitcom Friends. Friends is a hilarious and sometimes heartwarming sitcom about six friends (3 guys, 3 girls) who live in the same apartment building and follows their entertaining struggles through relationships and life's tribulations. Ultimately, four of the six friends become couples. Heart has 6 young leads to fill in the roles (Moses, Linda, Raymond Lam, Yoyo Mung, Bosco Wong, Tavia Yeung) of the 6 friends and the veterans can be their parents. [I'll do a separate post on who I think should play which part in a Friends recast later.] It would be refreshing to see a grand production comedy revolving around the lives of 6 friends [who together are essentially a family] rather than a modern "big family" comedy.
If it's ancient, I think it would probably be a costume "big family" comedy like Virtues of Harmony and Colourful Life.
Personally, I'd want a modern grand production comedy because TVB hasn't done one in a long time. However, I'd be happy and satisfied either way.
Filming most likely won't start until 2008. Moses, Bosco, Linda, and Lee See Kei are working on Gem until October 2007, Bosco will be working simultaneously on the modern version of War of In-Laws until the fall, Linda (who may or may not be filming in addition with Gem) and Yoyo are busy until November 2007 with Forensic Heroes II, and Raymond is tied up with the grand production wuxia adaptation of the novel The Four Great Constables by Wen Rui An.
This comedic Heart will be my most anticipated release in 2009 for sure. It would be great if TVB airs it as an anniversary series for that year too.
How about you guys? Are you liking the comedic Heart idea? Would you rather it be a costume or modern comedy?

Why did you bold "Ray, Bosco, Yoyo, and Tavia" but not Moses and Linda?
Thanks for answering my question! :)
I hope the next serie Bosco and Tavia will more more screen time. :)

I would love a coemdic series. I think there is an overdose of dramatic series right now. It also helps that I LOVE Heart of Greed's cast.
@anonymous- Metal already bolded Moses and Linda in the beginning.

i think it will be a good idea to do a big modern comedy series. i ageee that tvb has too many dramatics series of late that im really getting sick of them. i will like to see them change the pairings around this time. maybe to moses/yoyo, bosco/linda and raymond/tavia :) and yes a hong kong "friends" will be terrific idea! cant wait to read your post bout it.

if they're really going to film a sequel I'm really sure it will not be ancient.
anyway I'm still hoping that they won't film a sequel because sequels usually suck and it'll be a bore to see the same cast acting together again.....

By the way, I'm curious to know who's the "certain someone" who didn't get a boost in popularity.
5.6.07
I believe that "someone" is clearly Bosco...he's bashed at forums and no news of him whatsoever really in comparision to other cast members.
I'm definitely for an ancient comedy, too much modern sitcoms that they are getting tiring as well.
And if TVB does do a modern comedy, please don't base it on Friends...TVB would probably just ruin it for fans of Friends. Do something fresh and creative..no more adapting and getting ideas from Hollywood =).

Friends! Totally loved that show! frostbite here by the way, lazy to sign in lol

To jj: why is the certain someone clearly Bosco? Yoyo has her share of criticism and she has been missing all the time. Actually, although Bosco got criticisms, he also got a lot of praises and job offers because of HOG.
I definitely support the idea of comedy HOG, but I prefer it to be ancient, just because ancient comedy is usually funnier than modern comedy. For example, I think Happy Ever After and Legendary Four Aces are much funnier than A Recipe for the Heart.
I hope to see more screentime of Bosco and Tavia in the new series and hopefully, they will pair up again.

Bosco's performance in HOG was poor. It's like i've been repeating this too many times but there is something wrong with his acting when he has to act serious. His face just goes blank and expressionless in "serious" scenes. I'm not criticizing him but i think he's better with comedic roles.

To anonymous:
I forgot about Yoyo...but if I'm not wrong, she was criticized for her CHARACTER...whereas Bosco is critized for his PORTRAYAL, there's a difference.
And in the context of MetalAznWarrior, I personally took it in a negative way...almost sarcastic-like, and to me Bosco jumps out...as he is a regular on news and lately, it has declined instead of inclining with HOG.
Yoyo on the other hand has always been pretty low profile, so she didnt personally jump up to me...but you interpret it however you like!

I would absolutely love to see a comedic grand production. You're right, metal, TVB needs more of those. And as Heart of Greed did have a very good cast, I'm anticipating what type of storyline it will be.
I've always wondered how TVB would do a Friends adaptation since Friends is one of my favorite American comedies. I look forward to seeing your recast for them.
Of course, knowing how "well" TVB manages to do their adaptations of American sitcoms, I don't know if I really want Friends to be messed with. But it's a good idea nonetheless.

i LOVE LOVE LOVE the comedic HOG idea. i've been FIENDING for a good comedy recently. i cant take all this drama!
it would be awesome for the HOG cast to be in a comedy. i can't waittttttttttt [hope they'll really do it.]
i hope it'll be modern. i cant imagine them in an ancient comedy. it's just not right.
PLEASE no sitcom!
i dont think it'll be a sitcom cause the cast is tooo hugeee to have that much time to do sitcoms. a GRAND comedy will be perfecttt. :)

To jj: I'm not saying that you must be wrong, but I'm just wondering that it could have been yoyo too. I am aware of some criticisms on Bosco's acting. Personally, I disagree with the criticism. They said Bosco is rather expressionless when he is serious, but actually that is what required of him. He was supposed to be disinterested most of the time so of course he would be a little expressionless. However, in some scenes where his emotions are invoked, for example, the scenes outside the court where Tavia slapped him, I think he did really well conveying his emotions through his eyes.
I actually don't see him declining on the news, if we are not talking about "rumours" but normal news.

So many comments. :)
Heart of Greed will not have any sequel in any shape or form. What's left in the story?! LOL.
I like Bosco, so my comment was not in any way negative. I just based it on the general consensus I read at forums and news that a lot of people criticize Bosco's performance.
5.6.07
actually yoyo was critisized not only for her character but for her acting, speaking and english too.
5.6.07
haha i know who is that certain someone..:P..he's one of my favorites now :P
i might be one of the minority here but i dont care haha..well actually during the first half of the series i was quite disappointed with Bosco's performance especially his lack of expressions, i even started a thread at AF to choose someone to replace him :P - because I've never seen him acting that way in his recent series like WOIL, UTCOL, Devil's Disciples, Price of Greed and especially Dicey Business.
But then weirdly towards the end I began to realize 'certain things' and warm up to him. Especially in the last two episodes.
opinion varies and ppl are free to voice different stands, so i'm not afraid to join the minorities lol. overall i think bosco's performance and character is not outstanding, but in my POV he was consistently in character throughout the show. He did what was required of the character and i love Gil and Jackie's chemistry.
Back to topic I dont mind a comedy, it will be cute :D

I like something like Virtues of Harmony.A sitcom can be gud and have enough room for ppl to show their acting.
Personal, I dislike Gilbert as a character and dun really like Bosco as an actor in HOG. He is lack at acting sometime, even in the ending of the series. He is better in two last eps, but still not very gud. Well, maybe his eyes just gave me the annoying feelings as he wanna fight rite now in all the times, even when he is happy with his wife ( in eps 34, if I rmb rite). I agree tat I like his funny roles better. He looks good with them. However, I don't like War of In-law 1. Dun really know why but the ending killed my feelings. Bosco's chac became bad when he killed his si fu. Why he showed his si fu too easy tat way? Ungradeful. When he had troubles, he immediatly tell the whole world tat his si fu is the one who did it. Well, I feel sorry for the Si fu. Wat did he do? A bad man but in the past. His daughter was killed, and the main reason is who: Bosco's chac. If I was him, I'll do the same. Tat's why I say in the end, Bosco's chac is too ungraderful to his si fu.
Back to the topic: Maybe next year... Really hope to see Raymond again in the new series. Plz dun let him out, TVB ^^.
