the modern "war of in-laws"

You heard it here first! Last year, I successfully predicted that War of In-Laws would be the next series to get the "modern version" treatment. Surely enough, the costume fitting for War of In-Laws 2007 was today.
When news of the modern version first leaked back in October 2006, the Chinese title for the slated production was 我的野蠻新抱 ("Ngoh Dik Yeah Man Sun Po" - translated as My Barbaric Daughter-in-Law). Going from this title, the roles of Myolie Wu and Liza Wang were going to be reversed. Myolie was going to be the "barbaric" one that Liza was going to have to put up with because she's her daughter-in-law. The reversal of roles also fits more appropriately with modern times. Daughter-in-laws are no longer worried about pleasing their mother-in-laws as much as before and in some cases, the mother-in-law has to follow the wishes of her daughter-in-law! It would be very refreshing to see Myolie be outrageous and mean and Liza be the one who is suffering.
Disappointingly, the storyline obviously changed. The current title for the modern In-Laws is 我的野蠻奶奶2007 ("Ngoh Dik Yeah Man Lai Lai 2007" - directly translated as My Barbaric Mother-in-Law 2007 or War of In-Laws 2007). From this title, it's clear that Liza will remain "barbaric" in this modern version. I guess TVB deemed it too risky to change the "formula" of In-Laws too much.

The Devil Wears Prada Rip-Off?
The media is dubbing the modern In-Laws as a copy of the 2006 American movie The Devil Wears Prada starring the legendary Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Hathaway's character ("Andrea" or as she prefers to be called - "Andy") goes to work as the assistant of "Miranda Priestly" (Streep) in the prominent fashion magazine, Runway. "Andy" is clueless about fashion and she's only working at the magazine in hopes of a good recommendation letter so that she can write for a big newspaper. "Miranda" is the most fearsome boss ever - demanding, intimidating, etc. Devil follows "Andy" and the great strives she goes through as her assistant.
From information that leaked so far about the modern In-Laws, I can definitely say that TVB did indeed base the series around Devil. For starters, In-Laws 2007 also revolves heavily around clothes and the fashion industry (as Devil did). Liza's character is an executive at a fashion company and she will be "training" Myolie's character to become a "sophisticated" woman with some "fashion" sense. Originally, Myolie's character is a cop (and thus we can assume her character is somewhat of a tomboy or at least lacks a taste for "fashion"). This sounds just like Devil. "Miranda" makes "Andy" transform from a tomboy into someone who wears the latest fashion. The big difference between In-Laws 2007 and Devil is that Myolie and Liza will become in-laws as Myolie becomes a couple with Liza's son, Bosco Wong.
Besides Liza, Myolie, and Bosco, cast members of the modern In-Laws include Vivien Yeo, Suki Chui, and Stephen Huynh.
My thoughts: I absolutely hated the original/ancient In-Laws. I resent In-Laws for being so overrated. Its win as "Best Series" at the 2005 Anniversary was undeserved. I quite liked it at first, but the series instantly loses all merits of entertainment and charm and becomes a tiring, dragging, ridiculous, and desperate series. To me, it's not funny or charming, but irritating and nonsensical. I love In-Laws's premise/idea of a "barbaric" mother-in-law and with a much better script, this series could have succeeded. Unfortunately, the script was beyond lacking. This series was just lucky (as I believe Square Pegs - another series I am not fond of - was as well). I regret wasting 20-episodes time and watching it.
I like Liza. Her acting is superb and I do believe she is TVB's equivalent of Meryl Streep. Devil's success in the box office was primarily due to Streep and her wonderful portrayal and character. I actually watched Devil recently, so I think it's kind of funny that the modern In-Laws turned out to be TVB's version of The Devil Wears Prada. The movie was pretty much fluff and only somewhat entertaining at times - it wasn't my cup of tea. The only good scenes were those involving Streep's "Miranda" - who was incredibly snappy and convincing as the "boss from hell". I think Liza will do justice to a "Miranda"-like role.
Hmm... we'll see how War of In-Laws 2007 fares. I don't have any hopes for this production and will probably skip it as it doesn't interest me. I'm not interested in fashion and I'm not a fan of anyone in the cast aside from Liza. As I stated in a previous post, I am black-listing productions by Producer Kwan Wing Chung. I haven't liked a single series he has produced. His series lack charm and end up being really ridiculous and a waste of time. Producer Kwan also has a track record of ruining good American movies and producing terrible series. Hasn't he learned his lesson yet from his attempt at producing TVB's "version" of Bridget Jones's Diary/Korea's My Name is Kim Sam Soon with 2006's To Grow With Love?
Update: It turns out that TVB has replaced the original producer of In-Laws (Producer Kwan) and given "his" series to Producer Cheung Kin Man (another newcomer producer to TVB). That's funny. Producer Kwan was boasting about how he was going to create a "great" role for Myolie in the modern In-Laws so she could win "Best Actress." Hmm... wonder why he was replaced.
I'm neutral about Producer Cheung. His series include To Love With No Regrets, Dicey Business, Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion, and Lost In The Chamber of Love. The only series that I quite liked from him was Love. It was touching, meaningful, and quite funny. Dicey was okay (at least far better than anything Producer Kwan has produced). It seems like Producer Cheung loves to use Bosco.
I still do not look forward to this production despite a "better" producer being at the helm of it.

OMG, Metal, finally someone else who absolutely did not like war of In Laws. It was wayyy overrated and definately did not merit Best Series. It was highly exaggerated and it absolutely lagged near the end, because the antics grew old. Psh, Price of Greed definately outshines it any day.
Actually I was really turned off by Liza Wang's acting in War of In Laws. She was just plain annoying, not "cute" as everyone was saying. She was wayyy too exaggerating that it became an annoyance and her shrill voice made it worse. It really pissed me off that people largely agreed that Liza deserved the Best Actress that year, just because she did something different. Different does not equal good! Kenix had a harder role! She got ripped off, it'[s cuz of Liza's status that everyone would say that.
I am NOT looking forward to this modern version. It looks like a carbon copy of Devil Wears Prada..

I loved The Devil Wears Prada. I like Myolie and I really like Bosco, so I might watch this, but I hate Liza. I think her acting was over-exaggerated and it was pretty annoying. Besides, To Grow With Love is one of the most retarded series I have ever seen.
All in all, I'm neutral towards this series.

the series is produced by the guy who did Dicey Business, LWOLAP, etc.
another lousy producer IMO! LOL.

i like WOIL - well the first half of it lol XD..even though i'm not a fan of the exaggerations by Liza(i like Liza though but not here) and Myolie i found the twist of Bat Lau Ming vs Mao Chun interesting, and I was disappointed that the series didn't explore more on it in the second half of WOIL. The series went downhill for me after Bat Lau Ming was revealed and the story turned into a typical tvb series <_<
The new producer is Cheung Kin Man who produced Dicey Business, Au Revoir Shanghai, Lethal Weapons, etc. Not a promising producer. I only like Dicey and found the others blahh.
I dont have much interest in this new WOIL 2007 because its clearly a rip-off of Prada. And this series is missing my beloved point of WOIL which is the Bat Lau Ming vs Mao Chun fiasco.
But having said that i might still give this series a chance just because of Bosco and Liza(I'm indifferent for Myolie), no matter how lousy the series or their characters will be hahaha.
6.6.07
Metal, the series will be produced by Nelson Cheung not Producer Kwan
Actually im not really that fond of WOIL either and did not finish the series...i thought the series was nothing spectacular ..but i did think about trying the sequel out when it is released....but after seeing Bosco's performance in HOG........i kinda put that thought aside...i don't know why but I used to think that Bosco is not a bad actor but his performance in HOG dissapoints me.... though i do think that he can pull off comedic roles (such as WOIL) better than serious roles but...perhaps it's also because of his over exposure lately that I kinda have grown tired of him. Though I do like Myolie and Liza lol...im not a Bosco hater or anything so if you are his fans please don't be over sensitive...and I might be wrong but I have a feeling that the majority of people who are anticipating for this series are Boscolie fans...but I'm not one of those fans so I really have no interest towards it..I still think that he can improve with time and I still watch his upcoming series in the future such as The Seventh Day and The Gem Of Life (but for WOIL2, I think I'll probably skip it since Im also kinda skeptical about how good it is going to turn out).

I think Bosco did a good job in Dicey Business. I still a Bosco fan, but, I don't think I'll be watching this series either. It doesn't sound interesting and I'm not that impressed with the ancient one in the first place.
There are too more interesting series like the 4 Great Constables, Super Cop, Survivor's Law 2, Forensic Heroes 2, The Whole City Dance, Gentle Crackdown 2. I'm going to rent In First Beat the moment it's available in my rental shop.

i actually liked WOIL, BUT it was too overrated! - i agree with you. i mean the bosco-myolie thing went on for so long! i'm not actually looking forward to it either - seems kind of boring if the "background" is similar to TDWP~~ lol i still dont reckon bosco-myolie look good together either >>"
6.6.07
I disagree.. I think WOIL is a pretty good show! The entire cast did a terrific job and I'm sure this sequel will be just as good or better! "The Devils Wear Prada" was a great movie and love Meryl Steep's character. It's great that Liza's character will be just like hers. I think the producer will not disappoint, I have faith in him and the cast!
6.6.07
I dislike the ending of WOIL.
The Devils Wear Prada is one of my favorite American show. Hope this series is better than WOIl.
However, if Bosco does a serious role again, I think I'll start ignore his roles.
6.6.07
i liked the series xspt the part of wen bosco an myolie got 2gether an the fightin stopd btween myolie an liza
liza was fine 2 me her character is supose 2 b so xageratd soo yea..
i liked bosco's role veri cuti!!! =D

Thanks for the correction on the producer change! I've updated the post accordingly. LOL... not a great switch-off.
Michelle - That's great. :) We should start a War of In-Laws hater club. Hahaha. Although I like Liza, I agree that she did not deserve to win "Best Actress" for this series. :\
6.6.07
oh oh oh... i want to join the club... haha...
im not a fan of liza... i think she exaggerates a little too much... she did not deserve the award that year; i felt myolie deserved it more... but that's all in the past now... =D
6.6.07
mc3 r u a myolie fan?? LOL
6.6.07
sum1udunno: nope.. not really... haha... but i just felt she deserves it more... =D
6.6.07
Producer Cheung also did To Love With No Regrets (your favorite series) ;]
6.6.07
Well, unsurprisingly, I only watched War of In Laws because of Bosco. I liked the series until But Lau Ming was revealed, because it was amusing watching Ling Mau Chun getting jealous at himself because his wife admired the secret him and always scolded the real him.
I didn't much like either Myolie nor Liza in this series because I feel like they exaggerated their performances way too much. I also didn't like the type of character that Myolie was cast as; Sup Yut was irrational, stupid, and rash.
But I'll probably watch this modern version, although I hope it'll be a bit better than the ancient version. If it's one thing, I'll have to admit that Bosco and Myolie are very compatible onscreen, and I'm a sucker for romantic antics, so I'll look forward to those scenes once again as I did in the ancient version.
6.6.07
LOL! Are you serious? Well, call me flabbergasted indeed. :P I quite liked To Love With No Regrets, but it's not my "favorite" series. Lol. Obviously my favorite is VOH. Haha.
6.6.07
TGWL and TLWNR. So big difference in quality. :p
I like 'To Love With No Regret' but really dislike 'To Grow With Love'.
7.6.07
kidd - Oooh! Another fan of To Love With No Regrets! :) This series is so underrated, but it did pretty good in terms of ratings when it was aired in HK. If I'm not remembering incorrectly, it was in the Top 10 Highest Rated Series of 2004. :D
7.6.07
To Love With No Regrets is a cute touching series. It doesn't have big name cast only has Amy Kwok alone who has a reputation but the series is quite good.
