programme highlights '07 - issue ii

The second TVB Programme Highlights for 2007 is out! Much thanks to Ron Online for the great, high-quality scans! Now, let's go through the series included in this quarter's installment...

Legend of the Demigods
(Linda Chung, Benny Chan, Sunny Chan, Nancy Wu, etc.)

This is my most anticipated series of 2007. TVB hasn't done a mythical series in so long! I enjoy watching series of this genre. With such a strong producer and a nice cast, I am very confident about Legend. It seems fun and interesting. I'm glad it's 22 episodes and not 20.

Linda's role is fascinating. Her character is very cute and happy-go-lucky, but there's a twist. Aside from the traits of her character, Linda also has a variety of personalities and ages to portray. She acts as a 20, 30, 40, 50, and 70 year old - yes, becoming a hot granny. I've heard that she also acts as flirting twins as well as ugly in some parts. Linda is very positive about this series and feels grateful to have been chosen to act out this challenging role. I love Linda's image for this series - very cute and "Sailormoon" inspired. I hope this is another breakthrough for Linda as this is her first costume drama and her role sounds awesome. She filmed Legend before her breakthrough(s) in Heart of Greed and Best Bet, but after Heavenly In-Laws.

Swear is such an amazingly beautiful song too - I can't wait to hear it as the subsong playing at the end of episodes as the credits roll.

Although I'm dying to watch Legend, I'm praying that TVB doesn't release it until some time in the fall. Linda has had 80 episodes released so far this year (and it's only June). She needs a break from the TVB scene for a few months. Besides, Legend is her last release until 2008's blockbuster The Gem of Life is out, so I want to delay it as long as possible so the waiting time for Gem is less.

The Seventh Day
(Kevin Cheng, Niki Chow, Bosco Wong, Natalie Tong, etc.)

What a gorgeous poster! Well, at least half of it anyways. This is the "sad version" of 2006's hit Under the Canopy of Love - which I loved. I'm very excited about watching this series. I'm all for tragic series. I hope Seventh will be as beautiful, meaningful, and touching as TVB is promoting it to be. I'm glad everyone from the original Canopy cast is back. Although I don't like Kevin, I must say he and Niki are a good couple. Niki is a great actress. She just oozes with charisma and is very natural on-screen. Good for Natalie for having for first true second lead! I've been fond of her since her debut in Hearts of Fencing - such a cute girl! Bosco seriously needs to change his look. How many series has he had this particular haircut for now? The themesong to Seventh is dreadfully boring, but I really hope the series isn't. It would be such a pity if it is. This series has scenes filmed in Japan (which should be very beautiful with all of the snow and sights of Japan) and is also filmed in a special HD lens. Canopy used a soft lens to film, giving the series a very dreamy feel, so I hope Seventh also has a special appearance. I can't wait to watch this series!

The Drive of Life
(Damien Lau, Michael Miu, Raymond Lam, Joe Ma,
Charmaine Sheh, Jessica Hsuan, Myolie Wu, Sheren Tang, etc.)

Wow... poor Jessica. It seems TVB has truly dethroned her from the #1 TVB Sister spot simply because she won't renew her contract with them and replaced the spot with Charmaine. A previous Programme Highlights issue released at the beginning of the year credited Jessica as the female lead, but I guess Charmaine was the true lead all along. I honestly hope that the official poster is better than this. It is way too ugly and crowded. If TVB is willing to spend so much money on Drive, why spend short on the poster? Drive is the most expensive TVB series to date with $60 million HKD being spent on production and $1 million on promotional fees. This series celebrates the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's hand-over back to China. Drive is super-hyped and heavily promoted... I wonder if it will live up to all of the expectations people have of it and its performance. Frankly, I'm not interested in this series, but it seems way too grand to miss.

Tai Chi
(Vincent Zhao, Raymond Lam, Melissa Ng, Myolie Wu, etc.)

TVB decided to shorten the English title and make it succinct like the Chinese title as well as simplify the poster. I think I liked the name The Master of Tai Chi better as well as the fuller poster. Having just Vincent and Raymond (although I know the series will be carried on their shoulders) feels really empty. If TVB adds the other cast members to the poster, I think it would look really good. I am definitely looking forward to watching this series as I expressed earlier. People say that this series may be one of TVB's 2007 Anniversary series... if so, I think it's a good choice. It's a grand production with a nice cast, filmed in the mainland, and also the first TVB series in HDTV. Hopefully the script is good because Tai Chi really has everything else going for it.

Phoenix Rising
(Louisa So, Krystal Tin, Leila Tong, Sunny Chan, etc.)

I am interested in this series. I like the cast and it seems like a potentially intriguing and phenomenal series. Louisa is a superb actress and Krystal is quite good, so these two will carry the series very well. I hope Sunny will have another great role in this series like he did in War and Destiny. He is a very underrated actor.

Repeats from Issue I...

On The First Beat (Ron Ng, Sammul Chan, Joey Yung, Michael Tao, etc.) - I was unsure of this series at first and feared it may tarnish The Academy's great name, but positive reviews for this series thus far has really assuaged my fears. I'm definitely going to be watching this.

The Ultimate Crime Fighter (Yuen Biao, Moses Chan, Gigi Lai, Yoyo Mung, etc.) - There are rumors circulating that TVB wants to air this as one of 2007's Anniversary series... could this be why this series still hasn't released? I am still not interested in watching though.

The Family Link (Sheren Tang, Kiki Sheung, Cecilia Yip, Kenneth Ma, etc.) - This is the highest rated series of 2007 to date with a basis on one of my favorite American shows, Desperate Housewives, and led by the brilliant Sheren, of course I am going to watch this. I heard it's funny and enjoyable, so I look forward to watching it.

Devil's Disciples (Bosco Wong, Kevin Cheng, Bernice Liu, Shirley Yeung, etc.) - TVB must love wasting their ink and reprinting a series that was released at the beginning of the year already over and over again. Or are they trying to push this series again? I honestly hope that TVB doesn't air it come July. What a waste of a time slot that will be! I hope it's true that it's only airing on TVB's pay channel.

What series are you guys looking forward to?

I don't think Devil's Disciples is a waste of time slot. It's an enjoyable series. My whole family (including me) enjoy watching it very much. They like it more than Lethal Weapon of Love and Passion. I was actually glad when I heard TVB will air this series in July. I hope it gets good rating.

I know a lot of people whine about the ending, but it's not that horrible. Those guys just took a comedy way too seriously. I actually had fun watching the comical ending.

Thanx for this! I knew you would be posting them up soon when I saw DOL's scan at Spcnet.

Legend of the Demigods looks like a typical fantasy series of TVB...but I'm nevertheless looking forward to it, as I love this genre as well. Gods of Honour has been my most favorite fantasy series...so I hope this is up to par with that!!!

I'm unsure about The 7th Day...it depends how tragic it will be haha...seems like Bosco and Natalie's story will be light-hearted though. I absolutely hated UTCOL...and did not even finish it, so not very interested in this.
As for Bosco, his hair wasnt like this in HOG...the bang was not long at all. Kevin is the one that needs a different hairstyle lol.

There's no doubt for me to express how much I want to watch TDOL lol...and glad Charmaine is the female lead. The poster is crowded, but I think done the best that it can.

Awaiting Tai Chi for Myolie and especially Melissa...

Phoenix Rising looks great! The reflection in the mirror gives it a really strange, haungting feeling. Looking for to this the most, after DOL.

The 4 remaining...not very excited, but Super Cops appeal the most.

Series that look good:

The Drive of Life - right its too grand with A-grade casting and beautiful locations to be missed

Phoenix Rising - Solid cast and intriguing storyline

Tai Chi - its a grand production with solid cast and nice location filming

On The First Beat & Family Link - heard good reviews

Other series:

The Seventh Day - Kevin/Niki is quite good pair but the series looks boring and the cast are mostly newbies and yep Bosco's hairstyle is weird

Legend of the Demigods - not a fan of this genre looks cheesy

Ultimate Crime Fighter - looks ok

Devil's Disciples - enjoyable series for family but not fond of TVBs decision to air this in HK. (Some bloggers said its because of the producer's success with HOG) The ratings will suffer. This genre wont get high ratings and the storyline, characters and cast are not solid at all, minus Wayne Lai.

I'm really looking forward to Legend of the Demigods because, like you said, TVB hasn't done a mythical series in forever. I thought Linda's hair looked like Benny's in Gods of Honour.

As much as I love Bosco, I agree that he really needs to change his hair style. It's starting to irk me.

I'm also looking forward to DOL even though I think that the cast is just a bit much. Hopefully everyone's screentime is placed fairly because big casts tend to cause conflict of.. screentime (e.g, HOG).

Then I'm also looking forward to Phoenix Rising, but I hope that Leila's hair changes throughout the series because the mushroom bob does not go well with her, or anyone for that matter.

I really hope they don't air Devil's Disciples in HK. Waste of timeslot and as much as I love Bosco, this series really didn't make any sense at all. It'll just make TVB lose even more faith in ancient series =[

No Metal, I think Charm's picture and Jessica's picture are about the same size lol hehe
of course im definitely looking forward to TDOL, The Seventh Day, Tai Chi, haven't watched the First Beat and Family Link so I'll try them out. Phoenix Rising looks fine so we'll see how the reviews go when it is released...Too bad im not interested in fantasy dramas so ill skip Demigods and DD. The only series that im unsure of is the Crimefighters.

btw, I thought Raymond is supposed to be the main lead for TDOL like someone said earlier...of course they will also focus a lot on the generation so Ray should have a very big part but I just have the feeling that the older generation (3 brothers) are somewhat the true leads...hehe

im definitely looking forward to linda's series :) sounds like a challenging role, but im sure she wont disappoint us and play it well.

as for the seventh day, i think the poster can do without half of it *ough*bosco-natalie*cough* i think bosco has too many series of late, getting bored of seeing him though i like him.

definitely missing: the drive of life (it will only bore me to death. i cant stand anything more than 40 episodes), phoenix rising (cast just doesnt interest me) and the ultimate crime fighter(why on earth is it always on the booklet but never aired?)

i beg to differ bout devils disciple, the series is a fantastic one right to the last 20 minutes or so.

you must watch the family link, just watched the series completely and i love the ending!

as for on the first beat and tai chi, i really have mixed feelings bout them...

Definitely agree with mich that The Seventh Day poster can do without Bosco and Natalie's half. There's no point of putting them in the poster when they're only supporting casts and their half is not prettily done like Kevin and Niki's half destroys the whole picture

DD is confirmed to air after The Green Grass of Home :p

not really anticipating TDOL (for reasons u already know). sigh.

definitely watching TSD though.

there're half of the series that I don't look forward to, but the most intriguing is Pheonix Rising. Hopefully, the story won't end up misleading me to something else when they air or release it.

About the drive of life poster and production, tvb didn't spend a lot of money on Drive. It was their partner that gives tvb the money and tvb only offers technical, plot and actors help. I don't anticipate this series because the story sounds redundantly boring, but if CCTV is the funder, maybe I will take a glance, because tvb now has more money to spend on production, stage and costume?

Triump, I think when Metal says Charmaine is probably the female lead, that's is because I believe her name is listed before Jessica's.

I actually think the 7th Day's poster is done nicely, it shows the contrast very well..cuz I believe Bosco-Natalie are the comic relief of this tragic series. Who says supporting people can't be on the poster anyway? LOL it is almost always second leads on the posters.

Mich, like Metal said...Crime Fighter is probably the anniversary series..so it'll be aired in November. DD has been on these booklets just as much if not more...so yea!

jal - Lol, I already lost faith in TVB wuxia. Haha. After Twin of Brothers, 4 episodes of Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion, and 10 episodes of Face to Fate, I knew I was done. Unless Jin Yong allows TVB to remake his novels again, I will not watch any more wuxia from TVB. These other authors just aren't very good and all of the special effects and crap fighting really turns me off. :\

triumph - Lol, it would be way too disrespectful if Raymond's name was listed first. Personally I think he will have the most screen time and is the true lead...

And yes, as JJ explained, although Jessica and Charmaine's heads are the same size, Charmaine's name is listed first so this means she's leading.

popcorn - No! :(

Oh well... let the ratings die out again. I don't really care. Haha.

anoymous #3 - Thanks for the clarification on Drive's production cost. Even though it's not all TVB's money, it's still hella expensive. :P

Dicey Business was actually the first series aired that Bosco had that hair style. The rest were different. Heart of Greed was filmed before he changed his hairstyle to the one you see on the poster.

I'm really only looking forward to a few series:

The Legend of the Demigods (looks like TVB changed the English title) because I love costume series. And Linda is growing on me. Benny's a delight and Sunny has always been a very solid actor.

The Seventh Day of course, because of Bosco. However, I don't much like the idea of tragic, so I'm actually a little iffy about watching it. Niki is one of my favorite female artists and brought so much life to Ko Yat Sze in Canopy as well as Sup Yee Mui in The Gentle Crackdown that I can't wait to watch another of her series. Not too fond of Kevin though.

I'm curious about Tai Chi, as it has been advertised over and over again, and I know lot of people have been anticipating it for the longest time.

And I know that the Drive of Live seems very extravagant, but I've never been a fan of these dramas. I haven't even been able to finish Heart of Greed, no matter how much praise and how high the ratings were.

Devil's Disciples was fun. But really, that was about it. Wayne Lai was the highlight of the entire series and he was really the guy who kept me watching. The ending... was interesting...

Bosco's Dicey Business hair is different from his The Seventh Day hair. The Seventh Day is the first time he's using such a style.

I'm totally looking forward to seeing The Seventh Day. The poster and the theme song are awesome.. Hope the series is too!

So DD is confirmed to air that's why TVB is wasting their ink :P. Really a waste of time slot there are many other much better series lying around. But good for Wayne and Sharon their characters are the life of the series. The others are just annoyingly dumb, stiffly out of place, coldly boring or simply just there to be cute. Let the ratings die...

TVB should air Tai Chi and Phoenix Rising at least these two looks like it has some quality to it

The Seventh Day looks like its copied from Korean style. The love stories(both main and sub) sound like typical Korean dramas plot

im not sure how much money TVB put into the production, but r u sure CCTV put in that much money? because there were news saying how CCTV wasn't sure if they will air the series or not...well that was false after all because the series will be released on June 30th but just curious....

ani - Yeah, I'm not a fan of series of Drive's genre either. :\

anonymous #6 - It's such a shame that Devil's Disciples's airing will cause a better quality series to be warehoused. :(

Yeah, The Seventh Day does remind a lot of a Korean drama.

I'm really excited about "Phoenix Rising" cuz "Family Link" aired already. It has an excellent cast, Louisa, Crystal, Sunny, Leila and a great storyline (talking about prisions - I think). It gives me a very Price of Greed feel (which we all know how it turned out!!!) and if it gets to air, I believe it will be the "surprise" hit!

As for Drive of Live, agree with you Metal. I'm always wary of long, "epic" series, because they always disappoint and become too draggy (cough cough, which HOG also falls under). But like you said, it's too big to not watch. But I mean, Sheren decided to do it, and I really trust her taste in series. She knows what to pick..but it could be only her role was good?

I think out of DOL and Jewel's Splendor, I prefer Jewel. It looks to have a smaller cast..so better storyline, plus it's Chik Kei Yi. WHile Dance of Passion disappointed, because it didn't measure up to War and Beauty, but it was better than most. When it got exciting/emotional, it truly was spectacular, good stuff.

Btw, I'm in HK for vacation and got to attend Ray's signing with EEG..with LInda as a special guest. Wow, they are very pretty together...like just beautiful. Linda's really really pretty live!! I'm really hoping the rumors btw them are true! Linda did look as the reports called her the woman behind Ray at the function, standing by his side and all!

Between Drive and Jewels, even though Drive has a stronger and more popular cast(and many good looking hot guys :P)I'm interested about Jewels more because of the 'sisters' plot.

Linda's character in Jewels is interesting.

Yes its a shame that TVB is airing Devils. Just because of the producer....

Absolutely adore the poster for "Phoenix Rising" with tremendous aesthetic appeal, especially the mirror reflections. Haven't the slightest clue what the series' premise is, but the darker tone suggests an aura quite mysterious. Will definitely be on the look out for this series' release (even though I'm judging a series by its poster). :P

And here's a better poster for "The Drive of Life". It can't help but be crowded to emphasize "grandness" and showcase its "stellar cast". :)

Michelle - Wow! You're so lucky getting to see Ray and Linda live in person. How cool, you're in HK! Hope you have a great vacation there! :) Thanks for sharing the story, it was interesting to read.

Michelle & anonymous #7 - I agree with you both. I'm much looking forward to The Gem of Life compared to Drive because for starters, it's not so heavily promoted (yet). TVB isn't pushing it in our faces and plot details aren't being leaked. Producer Chik is truly keeping it under wraps learning from his Dance of Passion experience.

I love the fact that we don't know what Gem is about, so it keeps it exciting and interesting.

I also agree that the cast is smaller, so there'll be more opportunities for everyone to shine. But then again, it's also 20 episodes longer. Haha. And of course, I love the cast much more for obvious reasons. :P

TkN - Ah, but I just hate the picture selections that TVB made for Drive. :\ The cuts are horrible too. It just looks very amateur-ish. Personally I am not that impressed by the cast aside from Sheren Tang, Michael Miu, and Damien Lau. Haha.

triumph: I'm not sure how much money CCTV put into it. But I remembered the newspapers articles I read when they first started production, they said that CCTV wants to learn more about making grand production but they lack expertise. They look to TVB because TVB has good standing when making grand production. This newspapers articles was written before the announcement of other 2 CCTV collaborations.

I think there're 3 tvseries that celebrates the returning of China. One is this TVB series, another is Adam Cheng's(which has been highly publicized by CCTV), and Cherry Ying&Paul Chun's.

Of these 3, CCTV extols Adam Cheng the most, saying this has the most solid cast and plot. CCTV has advertised this series a lot on their channels and in newspapers while Drive Of Life was not even emphasized much by CCTV. It's like Adam's series is on CCTV 24/7, but Drive of life promotion has only appeared once or twice.

Personally, I think CCTV is just using TVB to learn everything they need to learn to manage a grand production. Adam's series is the one they truly make preparation for. And it was ironic of how CCTV praises the writing of Adam's series because the writer is a former TVB staff!

Yeah, CCTV is airing the MARNDARIN version of Drive of life on June 30th, the Cantonese version will be aired on TVB in July.

As for my anticipation... I have read but two lines into the synopsis and stopped because I don't want spoilers. :) At this point, my intrigue solely relies on the casting. And I'm friends with a total Ray-addict who keeps me updated with his latest involvements via clips and photos. haha.
