remember: winglin

Winglin was the home to one of the most infamous and long-lasting community in online TVB history. It is the mother of all forums that succeeded it.

As a fanfic haven
Winglin started out as a fanfiction site in the late 1990's. Writers would post their stories based on their favorite TVB artists and/or series and share with fellow fans, who would read them. The site was easy for writers to use and publish their works and it was hassle-free for fans to read and comment. To this day, Winglin remains to be the headquarters for TVB fanfiction writing and is the only remaining fragment of Winglin still accessible.

As a forum paradise
The boardmasters of Winglin decided to create forums for fan discussion (rather than just be a site for fanfic postings, reading, and discussions) of TVB artists and series. The layout followed a similar structure as those of the original Winglin fanfic site. The forums' threads were linear and fans could post without registration. The forums were free to the public and it soon became the "hot spot" for English TVB discussion. In particular, the "New TVB Discussion Forum" was very active. People would post news and have lengthy discussions on the latest releases.

The "golden years" of the Winglin forums remain to be the early 2000's. In those good times, Winglin wasn't just a forum. It was a home to many online TVB fans. It was a strongly-bound community of fans from all over the world. It was friendly and extremely active. Friendships blossomed and it was just a great time. People had intelligent and sound discussions. People knew one another and it was just a warm time and place.

It was the #1 source for anything and everything current about TVB. If you wanted to know something, someone at Winglin would be able to tell you. It was that simple.

Deteriorating and scares... it's the end
Starting in 2004, Winglin headed for an inevitable decline.

As the Internet became more widespread, new forums started to pop up everywhere. These new forums allowed people to have their own log-in and they were structured in an orderly way. People could quickly find their threads of interest. However, Winglin stood the test of time and its simplicity retained its loyal visitors. Even though the forum was threaded and lacked order, people still liked it for being easy-to-use and active. It remained a source for TVB information. However, these "other" forums started to attract and appeal to more people once Winglin began to have one huge problem...

The forums were frequently down as a result of a faulty and old server. People panicked and the mayhem that resulted with each "down time" was proof of Winglin's strong hold on the TVB community. However, as down times became more frequent, people started to accept that Winglin was not going to work all of the time. Perhaps its lack of stability turned a lot of visitors away and contributed to the continued degradation of activity at the forums.

In 2005, troublemakers started rumors that Winglin was going to shut down. With the site's already unstable nature, many fans believed the rumor to the true. Although the boardmasters have always been quiet, they never failed to update individual artist's forum banner and background. In 2005, however, forum layouts remained static. It looked like it was true that the boardmasters were bailing. Luckily, they set the record straight and told everyone that the problem with the downtime was because of the old server and that they were looking into upgrading so that the forums would run smoothly and be up at all times. The promise of a "new" Winglin was promising. However, with the atmosphere of the forums at that time, not even an upgrade could have saved it.

Since the "golden years" of Winglin came to a sad and abrupt conclusion, the forums began to change drastically - for the worse. Spams got worse. People got ruder. Familiarity and friendships were lost. People couldn't be civil. Heated arguments became more frequent. People were attacked. It was chaotic and downright scary.

I was holding off on writing a Remember article for Winglin because the boardmasters promised fans a "new" and "improved" Winglin back in 2006. I waited and waited... To my dismay, such a resurrection never came. I realize now that Winglin is truly but a memory and needs to be laid to rest.

Encoded Thoughts
In 2007, as a forum, Winglin is long gone. However, it retains its original purpose as a fanfic site and continues to serve writers and readers alike. The golden age of peaceful and happy discussions about TVB is gone. Left are golden memories of better times. While Winglin lacked the "custom" and "personal" features of current forums and had a problem with people "using other people's names," its simplicity and ease marks its beauty. The Winglin forums were a haven from boredom and a great source of information for many years. However, like everything else, all good things come to an end...

Thank you boardmasters for creating and maintaining such a beautiful home and a great place for so many years. You guys pioneered online English TVB discussions for overseas and non-Chinese literate fans. Winglin will always rightfully have its place in TVB's history and we will remember you for it.

Bonus: TVB Musings' Episodic Memory
Winglin was one of the first TVB sites I discovered after getting into the TVB world a few years ago. I used it as an information source as well as for opinions on series. It was a great place. I eventually become one of the "known" posters at that forum with my frequent postings. Winglin was a pivotal reason for the success of my Virtues of Harmony websites. They even linked my Virtues forums on their main page of forum directories. I used it to shamelessly advertise my site(s). I used to love Winglin in its "golden years." I'd go to it right after school and check out all of the new postings (which would be a lot). It was so fun! I was addicted to Winglin. I met a lot of good friends there (of which, sadly, I only talk to on an infrequent basis or none at all nowadays). There were so many great people at Winglin during the "golden years" that made Winglin such a fun and interesting place to visit.

I want to give a shout-out to nAnCeE ("Wifey"! I miss the way we used to post with our names together; our chats were so fun!), Diana ("Ah Lui"!), Candie, me, and Ray (If it wasn't for your posts praising Virtues so much, I don't know whether or not I would have had the faith to continue it. It's a scary thought to me now if I never had the 4-years Virtues experience.) I met countless of people over the years at Winglin, so if I forgot you and you're reading this... sorry!

In either 2002 or 2003, discussions started to stray from TVB. People began to be more interested in the personal lives of fellow posters. I remember that one time, everyone posted their pictures. It was crazy. Consequently, the boardmasters created a new forum for personal/off-topic discussions. I believe this was the start of the decline of Winglin. The atmosphere in the TVB forums never recovered after the "personal curiosity" explosion. Perhaps the lackluster-ness of TVB is to blame for the deterioration as well.

Despite my fond memories of Winglin, it hasn't always been so pleasant. The boardmasters know who I am. I bothered them countless of times as a result of "forum drama." Because of my "status" at the forums, people recognized who I was and I inevitably developed haters on Winglin. I don't want to go into details, but let's just say my "forum drama" involved stalkers and a despicable "shim" (inside joke/name).

In 2005, I discovered the joys of Winglin as a fanfic haven. I was very disappointed with Virtues of Harmony II's ending and had lots of ideas on how to continue the storyline, so I started a fanfic. I loved how simple it was to post chapters and the comments page that Winglin had was awesome. It allowed my fanfic to reach out to countless readers. It was great. Sadly, in 2006, I could no longer log in to post more chapters of my story. It turns out that all old users could no longer log into their accounts. However, my fanfic remains on Winglin's server. I probably lost a lot of readers as a result of the move from Winglin over to my own server - such a pity.

As the years went by, my postings on Winglin became less and less. The atmosphere there was no longer the same. Very little people knew anyone else. The "community" factor that was so strong in the early 2000's was lost. The forum became heavy on spam and haters. Its constant downtime was also discouraging. It just wasn't fun anymore. I also avoided posting or posted under a pseudonym because I knew that people still knew who "MetalAZNWarrior" was and I didn't want to leave myself vulnerable for haters to attack nonsensically. Nevertheless, I continued to visit on a daily basis out of habit and to check for news and/or discussions. At this current time, my passion for forums has died. Even if Winglin returned, I'd be indifferent. The feeling is just long gone.

However, I still appreciate and love Winglin for what it was and how much it gave me during the good times.

I actually "followed" you here from winglin. My friend (who was a frequent writer on winglin (she has multiple stories!) ) first introduced your Virtues of Harmony fanfic saying it was super good. I added it to my favourites and continued reading and checking for new chapters. Haha...so I was one of your Winglin visitors :). You posted this site on the winglin saying that you were going to continue the story here, and I saw all the chapters...so this was the second site of yours that I saved to my favourites. XD I actually started a fanfic there..I just never ended it :P Hehe..Anyways, I'm sure many of us are your previous winglin visitors :D

Wow, winglin -- it does bring back a LOT of memories. Thanks for such an interesting article, hehe I remember most of the things that you mentioned.. especially the long discussions on TVB series and making banners/backgrounds for the forums. I also remember you posting with nAnCeE, and people getting confused ["who's who?!" ahaha]

Loved this blog entry, thanks for evoking so many great memories ^^; At least winglin fanfic is still up =D

Hey I got to know your site from Winglin! Haha. Kind of miss the Winglin forums now. I can't read Chinese so it was cool how some ppl would update everyone on which series TVB will release next, etc etc. But like you, I couldn't stand the heated arguments which would sometimes go on for weeks.

Couldn't agree more

All the good writer has all gone and the stories on board lack of creativity and lack of the proper English language rules...

Where have all the good writers gone????

Even the fanfic board is meaningless now.

I can't even brought myself to post the story on it

yea i miss the good old days of the winglin forum. when i first started to get interested in tvb, my friend introduced me to the winglin forum and soon i was hooked on. i will go there everyday to check the latest news etc. i am very upset that this wonderful forum is now gone.. the fanfic site isnt very good now. good authors are rare to find and its like searching for a needle through a haystack for a story with even good english.

You know... I never really even realized when the (I called them cinple) forums disappeared. I'd stopped coming for awhile for some of the reasons you listed. Then, I decided to check up on them one day, and they were gone. :( Sad.

I still check Winglin (the fanfics) to get my LJ fix, but LJ lovers are a dying breed and not much there catches my eye anymore. Plusssss, one of my *favorite* stories ever was deleted! I really wished I'd copy+pasted it into Word now. :( :( Really sad.

i'm sure there are more memories, i'll post more when they pop up in my head :D

This article brings back good memories. Thanks a lot Metal for writing this article.

My friend introduced me to Winglin and I liked it since then but now the site is gone. :(

Couple days ago, I wanted to ask an actor's name but I don't know where to ask because in the past, I went to Winglin "New Discussion Forum" and posted my message there..now I don't know where to go.

Last year or so, the Winglin's star forum had so many spams and ads threads...so I think this place will close down, but now it's offically closed. :(

I was a winglin poster too but I used different nickname there.

Winglin was great fun back then. I like its simple format. I was using dial-up at that time, so, website with as little frills as possible is the best for me. But during its last months, it became quite problematic. I was often wrongfully banned because of some other culprits having similar IP address with me. :(

I'm glad you guys enjoyed this article. :) It's nice to read that everyone holds fond memories of Winglin!

Ah Lui - Haha... 56K... those were the days. :P Boy, do I not miss those. Hahaha.

bigsmile - Wow! Really? Wah, what a great story of how you came to know about my fanfic. :) I must thank your friend for introducting my story to you!

Ceci - Haha! I know. Everyone was all "How come you two post your name like that?" LOL. After a while people got used to it and realized that if it was "MetalAZNWarrior & nAnCeE", it was me and if it was the other way around, it was her. Haha. Great times.

sum1udunno - =O You didn't go online until last year?! That's... uh, shocking. Haha.

KTVB - LOL. You missed out. :P

kidd - Yeah, a lot of people had the IP address problem... I had that problem too. The boardmasters did something really special for me. I actually had a VIP log-in to access the forum. Haha. ;)

THANKS 4 this!
i kept waiting 4 them 2 come back w/new forums, too, but they're gone. =(

i first came to the winglin forums when i was looking for info on hacken back in 2001! i started posting in the new tvb series forum as well around 2002. it was so fun 2 read the posts and if u need anything tvb/hk star-related, ask, & some1 can help u! whether answer your question or send u a song, whatever!

i also knew u f/there, metal! and knew about your VOH site f/there too.

ah, sad how later, spam and haters caused a lot of trouble. also, the downtimes. i still went there almost daily, till the end, around oct. or nov. 2006, when all the forums disappeared. luckily, i started the new hacken lee forum months before the hacken forum there disappeared, so there was time 2 get every1 to the new forum.

some of us were talking about how we missed the winglin forums a while back, and this is what Tirami was said:
"i know!! you used to be able to ask silly questions liike if you didn't understand the ending, and peopel would reply...now if you go onto individual fan forums to ask stuff like taht, you get ignored tongue.gif . and i remember for some of the bigger series that aired they had individual forums hwere you could just discuss...and i loved how you didn't have to sign up (though that was probly what brough about a lot of the spam ><). and the forums for individual artists...woah, some of hte debates that went on in there were legendary!"

It's funny that I've "discovered" Winglin since eh.. *counts finger* seven years ago and haven't the slightest clue about the occurrences you mentioned. lol. A Google search led me to this brilliant fanfiction and I was instantly hooked. It wasn't until I re-read it twice did I realize a little button called "Main Index". And voila - more masterpieces from fans. The only forum I've become "attached" to at cinples.net was the Fanfic's, where authors and readers alike take efforts in improving and beautifying fictions grammatically and graphically. Alas, passion ends by itself if left un-reimbursed, so groups disband a couple years down the road. But friendships remain, till this day even. :) Whereas we formed "twinnies", you guys formed haters? Tis tis. :P [Actually, there was a huge drama with plagiarized fictions followed with mysterious disappearances of completed fictions, which unfortunately forced two loyal/dedicated co-admins to quit. :(]

And of course, gotta thank Google again for having pointed me to cinples.net whilst searching for news on Ada's "return" to TVB in DOP, which ultimately led me to TVB Musings. :) Oh wait, should have thanked you for the PR :P

BTW, any idea why it's called Winglin?

thanks for sharing about winglin's glorious history. i only came to winglin in dec last year when i was hunting for louis and jessica info. hence, i've always known winglin as a fanfic website. i never know about it's forum.

from the older lj stories, i could tell that there used to be a strongly-knitted community in winglin then. i wish i had an opportunity to be part of that community.

i could also tell from the lj stories that now is definitely not the "best fanfic era" for winglin either. as pointed by quackiechau, it is not easy to find a good lj story these days. but i have not given up on this website yet. i still check it at least once daily for a lj posting or two. i believe if people continue to post good stories there, they make a difference. take heart!

lastly, i've managed to make a few lj fanfic friends from winglin. this is really my gain because it is not easy to find lj fans these days too.

TkN & ak - Wow, it seems like Winglin's history as a fanfic site is much more prominent than its forum side. Their forums actually changed names two times. They upgrade to cinples.net back in 2003 or 2004.

TkN - Haha... I do have excellent PR. :P Just kidding.

I used to go to Winglin forums every day from 2000 until the moment forums were full of spam. I can't say I was totally loyal towards Winglin but I really hated those stupid ads/spam especially in my favourite artists' forum. x_x However, I really loved Winglin fanfictions...

Your nickname "MetalAZNWarrior" is very familiar to me by the way. =D

oh gosh!! i did not know this happened. i was an avid logger to Winglin from 2001-2005.. in fact, i got my news and posted 3 of my fanfics up there.. but as uni life and exams took over, i logged in less.. when i went overseas to study in 2006, my connection was very bad there.. so i limit my usage to only important things which excludes upload and download. this year, after i came back.. i tried to find the site as i still wanted to post my fanfic. in fact, i was not alone in posting fanfic during these whole time. another friend of mine who lives in the same house as me before we got seperated to leave for overseas tried to find Winglin as well to post her fanfic. sadly, as both of us could not find the site, we abandon this. i remembered the site was forumcinple.net.. yes.. and i could not find it anymore now. today, it was all of a sudden that i want to try my luck in finding for it and i bumped into your blog. thanks so much for this info. i really did not know since i am inactive from the world of internet for a couple of years. it's really sad. i do wonder now where can i find good fanfic site to read and post our own stories. however, eventhough Winglin is no longer existing, Winglin has definitely created a memorable venture for me in the world of online writing. =)
