desperate widow no. 3

Ng Yuk Hing - Angie Chiu from Point of No Return

Character Introduction: Ng Yuk Hing is a long-time servant of the prominent Chow family. Despite her "low status," she is regarded with respect and favored by many people because of her kind heart, intelligence, and skills. Yuk Hing and Chow Ming Hin (Damian Lau) have had a love affair for years, but because of business relationships, Ming Hin cannot marry her. The feelings between the two are lucid and understood, but they cannot be together. Despite not having a proper status with Ming Hin, Yuk Hing is always there to support him. She is the only one who understands him and cares about him unconditionally. She helps him run the business and family, keeping everything functional and in order. Ming Hin and Yuk Hing endure lots of challenges and finally get married, despite objections from his first wife and her family. However, Ming Hin suffers from a serious illness, which worsens because of the stress that he faces from everything he has to deal with. Six months after they are married, Ming Hin passes away. Yuk Hing is now alone in managing the business and family.

What is she desperate for?
Family order and happiness.

Why is she desperate?
She wants everything to be the way Ming Hin would want it. She doesn't want to see his hard work go to waste or for the family to fall apart. Yuk Hing became pregnant before Ming Hin died, but the pregnancy isn't smooth for her. The doctor tells her it's risky to continue carrying the baby. After Ming Hin dies, the business becomes shaky. The people now running the company make dangerous and risky moves and the family starts to fall apart without Ming Hin being the dominating factor in the Chow household. Yuk Hing feels desperately helpless and fears everything that Ming Hin fought so hard for might be lost.

What acts of desperation does she commit?
She goes through with the pregnancy and endures a problematic and difficult carriage. When she senses that the business is going to fail (no one in the company listened to her suggestions or urges), Yuk Hing pretends to be selfish and cashes her percentage of the family's assets. She takes everything that she's entitled to and leaves.

Is her desperation satisfied?
Yes. Albeit all the struggles, Yuk Hing was able to give birth to a healthy baby boy. She was able to keep the last thing that Ming Hin left for her. As she had predicted, the business collapsed and she returns just in time to save the Chows. Yuk Hing comes back with the money that she took, allowing the family to rebuild their business. In the end, Yuk Hing re-established the happy family and prosperous business that she knows Ming Hin would have been thrilled to see. Although she misses him, she has their son and the rest of the family to love and to love her back. She no longer has problems and her desperate acts have paid off. It's smooth sailing for her from now on.

Additional Comments: For widows, they don't want to see their late husband's efforts while he was alive to end up in vain, so they do all that's in their power to make sure that that doesn't happen. It's painful and disheartening for them to see what their husband did go to waste. In Yuk Hing's case, she fought desperately to make sure that the family stayed together, were happy, and that the company Ming Hin labored extensively for would remain as he had left it. Again, it all ties in with closure.

There's no doubt in my mind that Ming Hin and Yuk Hing were the saving graces for Point of No Return. I loved all of their scenes! After Ming Hin dies, the series begins to go downhill, losing its excitement. Although it was interesting to watch Yuk Hing as a desperate widow, I much preferred the scenes with Ming Hin in the first half of the series. Damian's performance was very captivating as was Angie's. It was nice to see them finally get together after going through so much, but too bad that he died six months after their wedding and doesn't live to see the birth of their son. Hopefully Angie will film another series for TVB soon. She's great in The Bund and this series.
