Joey (Bernice Liu) was speechless and lifeless as she enters "F&B" Company. After yesterday's event, she couldn't sleep or think about anything. So many questions circulated through her head and no answers were transmitted back. "Was that truly Chris (Frankie Lam)? Why doesn't he know who I am? Who was that girl with him and why were they so friendly?" she kept wondering over and over to herself.
Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) taps Joey. "Are you all right?"
Joey is startled and regains consciousness of reality. "I'm fine." Ah Nin's (Frankie) office was just before her eyes. His secretary greeted them and informed Ah Nin of his visitors. Joey's heart raced with hot blood flowing throughout her blood vessels. "Maybe it was all a misunderstanding. Yes, it must be. Maybe it wasn't even Chris at all." She took a deep breath and entered his office along with Nim Chi and the others.
[Ah Nin's Office]
Sitting behind a big desk filled with paperwork and folders was indeed the Ah Nin that Joey knew, and for a time, hated. On his desk was the name plaque "Mr. Chris Kam Nin" imprinted in gold. Joey stares at Chris, unsure of what to say or do. He looks up at them from his work. It's clear to Joey that he recognizes her from yesterday's rather embarrassing encounter. She blushes and lowers her head.
Seeing her son for the first time in months, Nim Chi wells with tears. "Ah Nin..." she cries. She walks over to him and wants to hug him, but he stops her.
"Excuse me, may I ask who you people are?"
"Ah Nin, what do you mean?"
"I'm a busy man. Please don't waste my time. Are you here for business? If so, what company are you representing?"
Nim Chi couldn't believe what she was seeing and hearing. Ah Nin was cold and emotionless. It was as if he had no idea who they were. "Ah Nin," she says, "don't play like this. I'm old and can't take such stress to my poor heart!"
"If you people aren't going to tell me who you are and what you want, I'm going to have to call security to remove you from my office."
"Ah Nin, what's the matter with you? Ma Chi came all the way to Shanghai to see you. How can you treat her this way?" Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) demands.
"'Machi?' Is that the name of your company?"
"Chris, don't you know who we are?" Joey runs up to him and shouts.
"It's you... again. I know I'm attractive, but why are you stalking me? You've molested me enough yesterday. What more do you want? To rape me?"
Joey slaps him, angry at his words. "How can you say that to me?"
Nim Chi is concerned. "Ah Nin, this isn't like you. Why are you acting this way?"
"Look," he answers, "I don't know who you people are. You must be from some small, struggling company."
The icy, stern looks in his eyes made Nim Chi see that his words were serious. "You really must not know who we are..." she trails off.
"How can that be?" Fiona (Sherming Yiu) comments quietly.
Joey looks at Ah Nin with emotional eyes.
"That's it," Ah Nin says, "I'm calling security to take you guys out. You come into my office and start crying and saying a bunch of nonsense. And you," he points to Joey, "have the nerve to slap me. Who do you people think you are? Do you have any idea who I am and my power in this company?" "F&B" securities come into the office to escort the four of them away.
Nim Chi looks at Ah Nin with tears flowing all over. "Take your hands off me!" she demands angrily. "I know my own way out." She runs off, hurt and unable to look back. Ah Sing and Fiona run after her.
Joey stands there gazing at Ah Nin, her eyes full of sorrow and uncertainty. "Chris, how can you do this to me and your family?"
Ah Nin looks up at her, "My family? I don't have any."
"You must be joking. You have a huge family back in Hong Kong. Everyone is worried about you and waiting for you to come home."
"Hong Kong?"
"Yes."
"So that explains it. Security, take her out. People from Hong Kong are mad!" he orders. As Joey is dragged away, she kept turning her head around to look at Ah Nin. His statements and actions were all so distant. It was as if his words were true and he had no idea who they were.
[Hotel]
Nim Chi sobs endlessly. "How can this be? How can he not know who we are?"
"Maybe something happened to him," Fiona reckons.
"But what could it be? He's right there before our eyes, healthy as ever."
Joey stood by the window, looking at the vastness and beauty of Shanghai. "Maybe," she says softly, "he lost his memories like me."
"Amnesia?" Ah Sing asks.
"Yes, that must be it," Fiona agrees.
"But how can that be?" Nim Chi continues crying.
"Ma Chi, let's go back and find him again," Ah Sing urges.
"I'm sure of it," Joey sadly says, "he told me that he has no family and it seems he doesn't even know that he's from Hong Kong."
"But what could have happened that led to this?"
Everyone is quiet, unsure of what to say. Perhaps the answer was a mystery in itself.
["F&B" Company]
The events of that morning buzzed among the "F&B" employees like hot gossip. Word of it soon came into the ears of Rose (Kenix Kwok). She walks over to Ah Nin's secretary (Natalie Tong) and asks, "Carrie, what happened?"
"Oh, Rose," Carrie pushes her glasses up, "you should have seen it! It was such a scene with tears and yells everywhere. Chris even had to bring in the security guards! Boy, everyone in the company was watching the event."
"Interesting... but why did it happen?"
"Well, from what I could hear, those people claim to be Chris's family. Remember, I called yesterday and told you about them waiting here? Well, they came back today. I don't know what kind of people they are. They are so strange! They must have heard that Chris is going to inherit this company from your father so they want to leech off some money. Aiya, these people. Chris has been so gloomy and upset after what happened! You should go in there and cheer him up."
Rose smiles, "Of course." Her stilettos tap against the floor as she walks. "Hi, Chris," she says sweetly.
Ah Nin grins upon seeing her. "Finally, someone who won't piss me off today."
"What's wrong?"
"I don't know, Rose. It's just that there's so much going on in the company and I feel so much pressure. And today, a bunch of weird people comes into my office crying hysterically and telling me that they're my family. If I didn't have you, I don't know what I would do. Everything is just so tiring." He gets up and kisses her passionately.
"Hey, hey! Stop," she giggles. "We'll be married soon. Then you can have me any way and any time you want." She puts her finger on his lips, "But now, I'm still daddy's innocent little girl and I mustn't have any of that." She winks and walks away.
As Rose reaches Carrie's desk, she whispers, "If they come back, let me know instantly."
