Seeking Happiness

Chapter 15

lost memories

[Shanghai, Mall]

Rose (Kenix Kwok) arranges for Nim Chi (Nancy Sit), Ah Sing (Hawick Lau), and Joey (Bernice Liu) to meet with Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) in the park. Fiona (Sherming Yiu) had decided to explore the malls of Shanghai that day. She figured that her presence wouldn't make a difference because she didn't know Ah Nin and he didn't know her. As Fiona walked through each store, she beamed with happiness looking at all of the lovely dresses and accessories. She felt like a princess again. She runs her finger down Ah Sing's credit card and smiles.

[Shanghai, Park]

"I'm so anxious!" Nim Chi says.

"Calm down, Ma Chi," Ah Sing chides, "if you get too excited and land up in the hospital, what will we do then?"

"There they are!" Joey points.

"Rose, are you sure about this?" Ah Nin asks.

"Of course. When have I ever been wrong? I won't do anything to hurt my one and only," she teases him. "Auntie!" she waves. When they reach each other, Rose announces, "I'm sorry, but I have some things to do. I'll leave Chris to you."

"Ah Nin," Nim Chi smiles.

His face is still cold and unaccepting towards the three. "Rose told me that you're really my family..."

"Yes, we surely are. Let's sit down by a bench and talk."

Nim Chi opens a photo book, filled with the Kams' memories. "These pictures are from Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) and Ah Lo's (Bondy Chiu) marriage," she explains, "Ah Yuet is your younger brother. These pictures are of Ah Yat (Joyce Chen), your youngest sister, from the time when she was filming a remake for 'Legend of Condor Heroes.' Your loving aunt Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen), uncle Gam (Louis Yuen), and you at the beach. Here's us when you were younger. And..."

"Wait," Ah Nin interrupts, "who's that manly and fat lady?"

"Ah Nin!" Nim Chi scolds. "You mustn't speak that way of your mother. Sure she can be trouble, but she is your mother and loved you dearly. Even though she was always gambling... but it doesn't matter."

Ah Nin is astounded. "She's my mother? Then who are you?"

"Oh, I guess I should have made it clearer. Your father and I dated in the past, but your birth mother had a crush on him. She stole him from me and got pregnant with you, which led to their marriage. She died out of sheer upset from having lost a winning lottery ticket flushed down the toilet. Then, your father and I married when you were about ten. I love you as if you're my own, so it doesn't matter."

"Then who's he?" Ah Nin points to Ah Sing.

"He's my birth son, your elder brother. I got pregnant with him during the time when Law Bing (Louis Yuen), your mother, stole my husband and forced him to marry her. I couldn't bear to tell your father the news of my pregnancy because it would break up your family, so I kept it to myself. My mother believed that Ah Sing would be a burden on my future, so she gave him away for adoption and tricked me that he was dead. A few years ago, I met him again and he joined our family."

"Are you kidding me? Why are the relationships in my 'family' so complicated?"

Nim Chi smiles, "I guess that's just the way fate works out."

"Ah Nin, even though I'm the 'big big brother' of the family, you will always be the 'big brother' to everyone else. Do you remember these?" Ah Sing shows him a pair of chopsticks. "These are Kam family's 'big brother' chopsticks. You handed them to me after I entered the family and said that I was now to take your place."

Joey notices Ah Nin's watch. "Chris, your watch!"

Ah Nin has a concerned expression as he examines his watch, "Don't scare me like that! I can't lose this watch."

"Why is it so important to you?"

"I just feel like I need it. I can't lose it. If I'm not wearing it, something is missing."

"Who gave it to you?"

"I'm not sure, but without it, I feel a void."

Joey smiles. Even though she was no longer in his memories, his love for her was still evident with his obsession for the watch, even if he didn't exactly know why the watch was so dear to him. "Chris, I bought that watch for you. A few years ago, we bought watches for each other, but we didn't tell one another. Through a contest at 'Ka Yan' company, we were able to exchange watches." Joey holds out her wrist, "You gave me this watch. See how they match?"

Ah Nin looks at her watch and compares it with his. He is surprised with how compatible the watches are. "But who are you?"

"I'm Joey, your..." she pauses, "... your very special and good friend."

"But from our other meetings, you treated me like more than a friend."

"I didn't want to stress your mind, but I'm really your girlfriend. We had a relationship a few years ago and loved each other passionately. Unfortunately, fate caused me to lose my memories of love with you. Your friend tricked me into believing that he was my boyfriend. You were so hurt that you left Hong Kong to go to Shanghai."

"You people are such liars! How can I believe such exaggerated and unbelievable stories?" Ah Nin stands up.

"Ah Nin, you have to believe us!"

"How can I? These stories are just ridiculous!" He stomps away.

Nim Chi cries, "I should have known it wouldn't be so easy to get him back."

"Ma Chi..."

She looks at Ah Sing, "I've regained one son, but I've lost another..."

Joey hugs Nim Chi, "Auntie Chi, we must have faith and keep trying."

Rose watches the scene in the shadows behind a big tree, smiling.
