Chapter 20

ah nin remembers nim chi

[Shanghai, Suen Family Mansion]

"Rose," Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) beckons, "please give this to Ah Nin."

"Oh?" Rose (Kenix Kwok) examines the small box wrapped in a handkerchief. "Why can't you give it yourself?"

"We've decided to go back to Hong Kong," Nim Chi announces.

"Really, but why? It seems like the situation is improving!"

Nim Chi smiles, "I wish I could lie to myself and believe that, but I know it's not. We're leaving later today. Please take good care of my son. I would like it if you could keep in touch."

"Of course! I won't take the son and not the mother!" Rose laughs.

"We're family," Nim Chi holds Rose's hand.

"Of course."

"I would love to see Ah Nin one last time before I leave Shanghai, but my heart can't bear it. So... please."

"Auntie Chi, you don't have to act like you're troubling me! I'm honored and happy to help you."

["F&B" Company, Ah Nin's Office]

Rose knocks on Ah Nin's (Frankie Lam) door before entering. "Are you busy?" she flashes a sweet smile.

"I always have time for you. What is it?"

"Auntie Chi told me to hand this to you."

"What is it?"

"I don't know. Open it and we'll both be enlightened." Rose hands him the box, "It's so light! I wonder what it is."

Ah Nin looks at the box and a sense of familiarity comes to him. He unties the pink handkerchief. Cookies decorated with the word "gold" were neatly arranged in the box. A familiar aroma rises to his nose. "It seems delicious," he comments. He takes a bite. It takes a moment for the taste of the cookie to register in the receptor cells of his tongue and brain. "Yuck!" he gags and spits out the cookies, "why did she give me these?"

"She says they're parting gifts. She's leaving for Hong Kong."

"Is she?" Ah Nin runs out of his office.

"Honey, where are you going?" Rose stands there flustered, upset that he left her without an explanation.

[Shanghai International Airport]

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) hugs Nim Chi, "Ma Chi, don't be sad! You still have us. Who knows, maybe one day Ah Nin will regain his memories and come to Hong Kong to find us. It's no use staying here and waiting and hoping for him to remember us. We can't do anything. We're just wasting money and time."

"Time and money?" Nim Chi is bitter, "This is a family member you're talking about."

"But you're the one who wanted to leave Shanghai!" Fiona (Sherming Yiu) declares.

Ah Sing urges her to hush. "Ma Chi's state is not stable now, don't mess with her!"

"I'm going to the bathroom to see what's taking Joey (Bernice Liu) so long."

"Ma Chi!"

"Stop calling me, I'm only going over to the..." Nim Chi stops dead in her track. The caller is not Ah Sing.

"Ma Chi!" Ah Nin repeats as he runs to her side. He pants, "Ma Chi, don't leave me."

Nim Chi's eyes open wide, "What did you call me?"

"Ma Chi..." Ah Nin beams and nods his head.

"You mean...? Oh! Ah Nin!" she gives him a big hug. "But how? How did you remember?"

"Kam family's cookies!"

"Oh, so they were so delicious and heartwarming that you were reminded of the past?"

Ah Nin shakes his head, "It's because they were so terrible! How could I forget such a bad taste? Every year you would make me these cookies for my birthday or some special occasion. The pink wrapping was also an eye sore! I remember when my birthday was on a school day one year. You made me carry it to school to share with my friends and show them how loving a family we were. I'll never forget the teases that I got from the pink handkerchief that day!"

"Wow, are they really that bad?"

"Yes! I didn't want to sadden you, so I kept it to myself all those years."

"But every time you would finish the entire batch, so I figured that they're you're favorite."

Ah Nin sticks out his tongue in a disgusted manner. "Do you remember that cat that lives in the alley of 'Tung Mat Yuen'? How do you suppose it got so fat?"

"No wonder it died of obesity! Oh, Ah Nin, it's so good to have you back."

"Ah Nin," Ah Sing smiles, "so you remember everything now?"

He shakes his head, "I only remember Ma Chi. Everything else is blurry. But I know that I have a big family and I want to go back to Hong Kong. Somehow, I feel the past was very important to me and I also think that I have a vast history in Hong Kong. I want to go back and try to remember. Will you let me?"

"Yes, always. I knew you would remember us again! Hope is so powerful."

"Ma Chi, you were the one who was despair and told us to leave Shanghai!" Ah Sing jokes.

"Well, it doesn't matter who's right or wrong. It's just good to have Ah Nin back."

"Not totally," Fiona adds, "he only remembers you."

"And that's enough," Nim Chi laughs, "as long as he remembers his Ma Chi."

"Ay, Ma Chi is always so biased!" Ah Sing whispers to Fiona.

Joey walks out of the bathroom and is surprised to see everyone crowding around someone. "What's going on?" she wonders.

"Oh, Joey!" Nim Chi calls, "it's Ah Nin! His memories have come back!"

A big smile appears on Joey's face. "You mean, Chris...?"

"Joey," he says as he approaches her.

Joey's heart pounds.

"You have a piece of toilet tissue stuck in your pockets!"

Joey's cheeks flush a rosy red.

Ah Sing corrects his mother, "What she means is that he remembers her only."

"Thanks to her terrible cookies," Fiona adds.

"Oh..." Joey is disappointed.

"No worries! You people will just have to be patient and time will solve everything."

"She loves saying that phrase," Ah Sing lowers his voice.

Rose found her way to the airport by calling her daddy's men to follow Ah Nin's car. She watches the reunion of Ah Nin and his family in the far distance. "Damn it," she angrily shouts. In spite of all the noises at the airport, the sound of Rose's high heels could be heard as she stomps away.
