Chapter 27

troublesome gwai yan

[Gwai Fei's Apartment]

Man Gwai Fei (Stephanie Che) sighed as she entered her house. She couldn't think of where to go for the day, so she decided to go home.

"Cousin, welcome back!" Gwai Yan (Celine Ma) greets.

Gwai Fei is startled. "What the...?" She had forgotten all about her new guest. "Oh, I'm sorry Yan Yan."

"It's okay, Fei Fei. Forgetfulness is inevitable when you age."

"Aged? You're older than me!"

"Technically by only a few hours. I was so bored today that I cleaned up all around the house and even prepared a nice dinner for you!"

"Did you?"

Gwai Fei walks over to her couch to relax. She notices that her swan crystal figurine is missing from the coffee table. "Yan Yan, while you were cleaning today, did you move my swan from the table?"

Gwai Yan blushes, "Cousin, I'm so sorry. I accidentally smashed it while cleaning today."

"You... what?!" Gwai Fei tried to calm herself. The swan crystal was the first thing that she had bought for herself since she began working in Hong Kong. "It's okay," she tried to play it off, "I never liked it anyways."

"I figured that. What a ugly piece! Whoever bought it is blind."

"I bought it!"

"You did? Oh, I'm sorry. I figured one of your boyfriends bought it for you. Let's go have dinner!"

Gwai Fei takes in the rich aromas and smiles. "Yan Yan, you're such a good cook."

"Let's eat!"

Gwai Fei and Gwai Yan finish eating and rest on the couch.

"Yan Yan, that was a marvelous dinner. Abalone and shark's fin never tasted so good!"

Gwai Yan smiles.

A sudden thought comes to Gwai Fei's head. "Where did you get the money to buy those ingredients?"

"Oh, I found it stuffed in a vase while cleaning."

Gwai Fei's eyes project. "The vase behind the television?"

Gwai Yan nods.

"Oh god..."

"Is there something wrong?"

"Nothing, nothing." The money that Gwai Fei had stuffed there was money that she hoped to use for an upcoming vacation. "How much of the money did you spend... out of the amount that you found?" Gwai Fei was hopeful that Gwai Yan hadn't spent the entire thing.

"All of it."

"What? That meal didn't cost that much money!"

"I know. The meal was only a small portion. The rest I used to buy things for myself."

"Yan Yan, why didn't you ask me about the money before you spent it? That's stealing!"

"I didn't know it was yours. I thought it came with the vase."

Gwai Fei rolled her eyes.

Gwai Yan began to cry, "I'm so sorry cousin. I bet you want to kick me out again like everyone else."

"What do you mean?"

"My father sent me to America to live with your father because I was ruining his business. Your father sent me back home and so forth. They kept pushing me back and forth because no one wanted me. They said I ruined their business because I was troublesome. Please, Fei Fei, don't kick me out!"

"So that's why daddy was so insistent upon me keeping her," Gwai Fei thinks to herself.

"Fei Fei," Gwai Yan continues between sobs, "no one has ever wanted me. When I heard from your father that he was sending me to you, I was happy because I thought we could be friends like we were in the past. Remember how we used to stick together and support one another? But now I'm afraid you're going to kick me out... like everyone else. But I don't blame you. You're so beautiful and classy, I make you look bad."

"Yan Yan, don't say that..."

"It's true!"

"Yan Yan, stop. I like having you around," she says. "Because you're so unattractive, people will find my beauty even more heavenly," Gwai Fei finishes in her head. "Don't leave, I feel happy that you're here with me because now I'm not alone," Gwai Fei continues.

"Really?"

Gwai Fei nods forcefully while grimacing a grin.

"I like being around you. You're so elegant and pretty, I hope it will rub off on me."

"Oh, Yan Yan..."

"To be honest, Fei Fei, I came to Hong Kong because I want to look for a husband."

"A husband?"

"Yes. I want to find someone who will take care of me."

"Yan Yan, what kind of modern-day woman are you? We have to be independent and strong!"

"Yes, but we don't have to be spinsters. I don't want to die alone! A woman is only a woman after she is married and has a family. I want a husband and a family. Being single and independent just isn't me. Maybe it is for you, but it's puzzling for me because you're so high quality that I'm surprised you haven't been taken yet. After I get married, I'll leave and won't bother you or anyone again."

"You can stay for as long as you want."

"I'll go wash the dishes."

Gwai Fei sighed. Judging from Gwai Yan's beauty, it would be a long time before she would get married and move out. She winces at the sound of her expensive China dish breaking. Gwai Yan shouts an apology. "I can't keep having her around the house all the time. She'll wreck everything! I need to find her a job and get her out of the house!" Gwai Fei remembers "Ka Yan" company and an idea comes into her head.
