Chapter 3

another day at "ka yan"

[Kam Family Car]

In the past, everyone took the public bus. However, after everyone got married, they decided to chip in to buy a minivan. Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) laughs remembering how a few years ago he and Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) had starved themselves to save money for a car. In the end, their medical expenses from their fasting was more costly than the little they managed to save by not eating!

"Strange... the operator says that big brother's phone line is not in service!" Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) exclaims.

"Are you sure you dialed the right number? Your hours at the TV station have been unstable lately."

"Yes, I'm sure. I dialed it several times and the same thing happens. Second brother, I don't feel good about this. It is not like big brother to be so irresponsible and not contact us in so long. Maybe something happened to him..."

"Aiya, you're such a silly girl! Do you think that kidnaps and disappearances happen as often as they do in your ridiculous TV productions?" Ah Lo asks.

"Well, when I was watching "The Bund," Shanghai seemed like a violent place with gangs!" Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) answers.

"Einstein (Yvonne), that was the 1930's! Shanghai is different now," Gam (Louis Yuen) scolds.

"But it is still not Hong Kong," Ying Gei answers.

"Sister OK (Yvonne), Hong Kong is filled with mafias as well," Ah Hong (Johnny Tang) adds.

"Even if you get into trouble, they will only steal your money. Only H5N1 (Louis) can stand to steal your 'beauty,'" Ah Lo teases.

"Gam Gam, they're messing with me again!" Ying Gei tags on his shirt.

"Even if you get into trouble, Auntie Chi (Nancy Sit) will be able to save you!" Gam laughs.

"Oh, that's right. Speaking of Ma Chi, did everyone do their part in tonight's party for her?" Ah Yuet asks.

Ah Lo reports, "Well, we gave her the small present chipped in by all of us already this morning. Ah Yat was in charge of the restaurant reservation..."

"I've been working late hours on finishing a series lately, so I told Ah Hong to do it for me."

"I was designing and making costumes for a new grand production so I asked H5N1..."

"My stomach hasn't been feeling well, so I asked Einstein to do it for me."

At this mention, Ying Gei's face blushed as Ah Lo glared at her. She apologizes. "I've been out everyday at a temple praying that I would get pregnant soon, so..."

"So basically we have no restaurant reservations," Ah Yuet sighs. "Do you guys know that the restaurant that Ma Chi likes is very popular? It's too late now! We'll never be able to get a reservation for tonight."

"How about we prepare a home-cooked meal for her?" Ah Lo suggests.

"There's no time. We have to work until 5:00 PM."

"How about we call sister Sa (Kingdom Yuen) and ask her to help us?" Ah Hong asks.

"But her cooking is terrible," Ah Lo shudders. "But then again, mother-in-law is used to her cooking anyways. Let me call her and ask." Ah Lo flips open her cell phone and gives Sa Sa a call. "Hello, auntie? Yes, it's me, Ah Lo. Are you busy? Oh, you have to follow 11th brother (Lee Kwok Lun) to the film studio today? Well, listen auntie... Today is mother-in-law's birthday and... What? You totally forgot? Aiya, auntie! We told you to make reservations to the restaurant for tonight's party, too! How could you forget? Ok, ok. Calm down! What? You'll make dinner for tonight? By yourself? Are you sure? Ok, thanks auntie! See you tonight." Ah Lo smiles.

"Wife, how can you put the blame onto auntie?" Ah Yuet shakes his head.

"Honey, pushing the blame and responsibility on others is what we at Kam family do best!"

["Ka Yan" Company]

Ah Yuet, Ah Lo, Gam, and Ying Gei rush into the doors of "Ka Yan" just as the clock ticked 9:00 AM. The expression on Man Gwai Fei's (Stephanie Che) face was displeased and in her hands were four letters. It was obvious that she had been waiting and hoping that they were late so that she could give them warning letters. The older Gwai Fei got, the more idle she felt. No matter how hard she tried to seduce men with her forty-two inch legs, everyone barfed at the sight of her. Consequently, she became a bitter woman and took out her angry on the "Ka Yan" employees. She stomps her high-heeled shoes and marches to her office, most likely to indulge in a chicken leg that she kept in her desk.

"Thank goodness you guys made it on time today! Miss Man seems even more pissed today than yesterday," Lily (Rain Lau) says.

"Well, what do you expect? Each day she gets older and unlike wine, she is not getting any better," Gam laughs.

"Maybe we can find her a boyfriend so that she will leave us alone," Sugar (Yau Ching) suggests.

"Do you remember what happened the last time we did that?" GiGi (Josephine Shum) sighs. "No one wants Miss Man and that is the truth."

Abruptly, the sound of high-heels clicking against the floor startles the "Ka Yan" employees. They were afraid that Gwai Fei had heard what they said. Thankfully, it is not "Ka Yan"'s evil manager, but it is "Ka Yan"'s beauty, Ah Lam (Linda Chung).

"Good morning, everyone," she says cheerfully. Seeing everyone crowding around, her face changes expression and she yells at them, "Did we hire you to stand around and gossip? Break up the party and get to work! We have a lot to do." Ah Lam walks to her office and shuts the door.

The "Ka Yan" employees sigh. One manager was a witch and the other had a split-personality; either place was death.

"Ah Yuet, shall we ask for a leave so that we can take mother-in-law to Shanghai?" Ah Lo whispers across her desk to him.

"Now is not a good time. 'Ka Yan''s business hasn't been going well lately and everyone seems so grumpy. Although I'm worried about Ma Chi, we can't risk our jobs. You will give birth soon and have to take leave anyways."

"If we can't ask the two 'tigers,' how about we ask the 'lion'?"

"You mean Ah San (Steven Ma)?"

"No, I mean our boss, Mr. Wong (Lau Dan)."

"I don't know, he seems tense these days as well."

Ah Lo sighs, "Everyone is acting so strangely these days. This environment is not good for my babies!"

"Yes, well, we better get to work otherwise they won't even get to experience the environment to see if it's good or not!"
