Chapter 30

arrival in hong kong

[Gwai Fei's Apartment]

"Cousin, what the hell happened today?" Gwai Yan (Celine Ma) demands. "When you called me, I thought you had found someone for me so that's why you told me to appear nicely. When I arrived, I find some old man and that I'm hired for a job?"

"Yan Yan, do you think you will find men by staying at my house all day?" Gwai Fei (Stephanie Che) asks.

"So you got me a job because of me? That's so thoughtful!" Gwai Yan jumps on Gwai Fei and hugs her. "I'm so touched! This is the first time that someone has done something especially for me. Cousin, you're too good to me!"

Gwai Fei smiles while thinking, "You better get off me soon!"

"Fei Fei, I'm so touched that I'm not going to lie to you."

"Lie?"

"I was doing your laundry for you today and I accidentally shrunk your clothes."

"My expensive clothing?" Gwai Fei shouts.

"But you love me so much, a little ruined clothes won't matter, right? You can always buy new ones!"

"Don't worry about it, Yan Yan. I have plenty of clothes anyways."

"Actually, I washed every one of your outfits."

Gwai Fei's eyes bulge, "You mean you shrunk every single piece of my clothing?"

Gwai Yan blushes and nods.

"Stay here. I need to go shopping." Gwai Fei walks out of the door and slams it shut. "That Yan Yan!" she shakes her fist.

[Kam Family Apartment]

The Kams all greet Rose (Kenix Kwok) as she enters their humble 8A apartment.

"You're as pretty as a pageant winner!" Gam (Louis Yuen) comments.

"Nice catch, big brother," Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) says.

Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) grabs his ear, "What was that?"

"It doesn't hurt to praise a beautiful rose when I see one, right?"

"You already have a beautiful flower, who's carrying your seedlings, next to you every day! What more do you want?" Ah Lo thinks to herself, "She's skinnier than me! I'll have to ask her how she slims so much so that I can get a body like hers after I give birth. I'm so jealous!"

"Thank you," Rose smiles.

"With a smile like that, she could send anyone's soul flying up to heaven," Ah Hong (Johnny Tang) sighs.

"If you don't stop staring, I'll punch your soul to heaven," Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) warns.

Rose laughs, "You guys are so much like a family!"

"Dinner is ready!" Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen) declares.

[Dining Table]

"Auntie Chi," Rose asks, "Has Chris gotten better since he returned to Hong Kong?"

"He hasn't told you? He remembers most of us now and he's remembering more and more each day."

Rose smiles, "Is he? How great!" She clenched her right fist and pinched herself with her left hand under the table. She had made a dire mistake.

Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) hits her head, "Aiya! I haven't arranged where you're going to sleep tonight yet, Rose!"

"I can share a bed with Chris. We're engaged, after all."

"But his bed is in my room and he's also sleeping with his nephews."

"Foon Foon and Hei Hei are cute... I don't mind."

"Ma Chi," Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) speaks up, "We've decided to move out."

Nim Chi gasps, "What?"

"Fiona and I are moving downstairs to 7A."

"Isn't that Uncle Sau's house?" Ah Lo asks.

"It is. We... asked him earlier and he said it was okay for us to move in with him."

"But he's not our relative! How can I rest at ease knowing you two are bothering him so?"

"Ma Chi, if you forgot, I knew Uncle Sau way before you! In fact, he is like my father."

"Your father?" Nim Chi scoffs, "Don't say that again. A comparison between him and your father is a disgrace."

"Ma Chi and Uncle Sau have a grudge," Ah Sing whispers to Fiona (Sherming Yiu).

"So, Ah Nin and Rose can sleep in his room tonight," Fiona says.

"That room rightfully belongs to Ah Nin anyways," Ah Sing adds.

[Ah Nin & Rose's Bedroom]

"I haven't been in here in years!" Ah Nin stretches his arms and inhales deeply. "And it smells..." he laughs, "Not like me anymore!"

Rose grins as she sits on the bed.

Ah Nin turns around and says sternly, "You've been a bad girl!"

Rose's eyes twitch back and forth, "What do you mean?" she weakly laughs.

"I know and you know clearly what you did. I have to punish you for this!"

Rose's heart pounded in her chest. She worried that his memories had been restored to such a level that he truly remembered the past. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm totally innocent." She crosses her arms and turns her head away.

Ah Nin pounces on Rose and locks her in his arms.

"Chris! What are you doing?" she tries to break free. Rose feared for the worst.

"How dare you..."

Rose's forehead was damp.

"How dare you leave your fiancé alone for nearly a week!"

She relaxes. Her worries had been alleviated.

"God, I missed you so much Rose," Ah Nin says. He's about to kiss her when there's a knock on the door. He clears his throat, "Who is it?"

"Ah Nin, it's me," Nim Chi answers, "Foon Foon and Hei Hei want to see you!"

"Tell them it's late... I'll see them in the morning."

Foon Foon and Hei Hei start crying.

"Rose, I'm sorry. I'm going to have to entertain them before I can return and finish what we've started."

[Ng Sau's Apartment]

"Uncle Sau!" Ah Sing greets.

"Ah Sing! When did you get back?"

"A few weeks ago."

"You've been back for so long and you didn't visit me earlier?" Ng Sau (Albert Lo) says in an angered tone. "Not only that, you bought back your princess and didn't even introduce me to her? Who told your obese of a mother about your relationship with Fiona in the first place? If it wasn't for me..."

Ah Sing places his arms on Sau's shoulders, "Yes, yes, I'm eternally gratefully to you."

Sau notices the luggage on the floor, "What's that?"

"Uncle Sau, it's been so long since you've seen me. I bet you miss me terribly so we've decided to move in with you!"

"Gee, how thoughtful. Your fat mother won't take you in, so you come to me?"

"Now, Uncle Sau! Don't be like that!"

"Say, Ah Sing, did you marry a woman or a puppet? How come your wife is so quiet?"

"Uncle Sau, how are you?" Fiona says in a sweet voice.

"That's better. You've been doing all the talking and I'm tired of your voice, Ah Sing."

"Uncle Sau, please take us in," Fiona smiles.

"Because the princess has requested it, you two may stay with me."

[Living Room]

"When did you move to this apartment building, Uncle Sau?" Ah Sing questions.

"A few years ago. Ah Lam was fearful of my health, so she moved me here. That silly girl thought that your fat mother was good for my health."

"It was Ah Lam?"

Sau nods, "She moved me here and then she left me all alone!"

"Who is Ah Lam?" Fiona asks.

"She's my niece, a lovely girl. I must introduce her to you, Fiona. I'm sure you two will get along."

"Where is Ah Lam now?" Ah Sing inquires.

"She got married. You know what they say... a girl that's married is like a bucket of water splashed out. What are you two doing back here in Hong Kong? I thought you would never return and live happily ever after on the Islands!"

"I suppose it's my fault," Fiona quietly says.

"What happened?"

"Fiona got tired of being a princess and wanted to see what it was like to live as a normal person," Ah Sing explains.

"Oh, I see! Well you must take me to see your kingdom and court in the future!"

"If there's that chance," Fiona smiles.

[Ah Nin & Rose's Bedroom]

Rose pinches herself. She couldn't believe how much damage a few days had done. She takes out a bottle of pills from her bag. "No use giving Chris these anymore... it's useless now." She throws the pills in the trash.

Abruptly, the door opens.

Ah Nin pants, "Foon Foon and Hei Hei sure take a lot of my energy."

"More so than I do."

"Rose, I've decided something."

"What is it?"

"I'm not going back to Shanghai."

Rose's eyes dilate and she exclaims, "What?"

"I've decided to stay here. The past few days have led me to believe that my past was very rich. I have a feeling that there is still so much more that I need to remember. You will support me, right Rose?"

"I'm always behind you. But..." Tears well up in Rose's eyes.

"What's the matter?"

"The reason I took so long to come to Hong Kong was because my daddy was signing the company to our names."

"You're kidding me!"

"I'm not. As an early wedding present, he wants to award and pass on his company to us. But now that you've..."

"Just give me a little time, Rose. When I feel that I've remembered enough, I'll go back."

As Rose nods her acceptance, she thinks to herself, "A little time is too much. I need another plan."
