Chapter 32

ah nin wants to work for "ka yan"

["Ka Yan" Company, Gwai Fei's Office]

"How's the teaching going, Lily (Rain Lau)?" Man Gwai Fei (Stephanie Che) asks as she enters her office.

"Not well, Miss Man."

"It better improve or else you're fired!"

"Miss Man, why do I have to teach Yan Yan this?"

Gwai Yan (Celine Ma) slaps Lily, "Don't call me 'Yan Yan'! Only Fei Fei can call me that."

Lily is flustered, "Well, Miss Man, why can't the other Miss Man just use a calculator? Technology has advanced. We should use it."

Gwai Fei slaps Lily.

"What was that for?"

"I didn't want to hurt myself, so I hit you for my dumbness," Gwai Fei explains.

"Well, excuse me!" Lily marches out of Gwai Fei's office. She had never been so humiliated before.

"So is the problem solved, Fei Fei?"

Gwai Fei scratches her chin, "Not quite." She calls for Sugar (Yau Ching) to come in.

"Miss Man, you called me?"

"No, you're just hearing things."

"Oh, I'm sorry."

Gwai Fei rolls her eyes, "Of course I called you, idiot!"

"Is there something wrong?"

"I want you to teach Yan Yan how to be an accountant."

Sugar blinks, "Excuse me?"

"You heard me!"

"But I thought Gwai Yan was an accountant! You told me I was going to get relieved of my work."

"I lied."

"Miss Man, you...!"

Gwai Fei slaps her, "Shut up and just teach her."

"There's too much! It took me years to get my degree. If I have to teach her, it'll take at least a decade."

"That's right..." Gwai Fei thinks. "You know what Sugar?"

"What?"

"You're going to do all of the accounting and pretend that Yan Yan contributed."

"But what's the point of hiring another accountant then!"

"Sugar, you're the best 'Ka Yan' accountant. Please continue to work hard and do a great job like always."

"Do you mean that, Miss Man?"

"Of course." She raises her voice, "Now get back to work!"

Sugar walks out feeling confused but somehow proud. "Miss Man praised me... but now I'm doing the work of two people?!"

Gwai Fei cackles, "Problem solved!"

Gwai Yan asks, "Then what do I do at the office then?"

"Sit around and look pretty."

"Oh, I can do that!"

Gwai Fei rolls her eyes.

["Tung Mat Yuen" Café]

"Auntie Chi, your café is so nice and humble! No wonder the neighborhood supports it for over thirty years now," Rose (Kenix Kwok) compliments.

Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) blushes, "I do have the thank to the neighbors for 'Tung Mat Yuen's success!"

"And yet she rips them off everyday with the over-priced egg tarts and milk tea!" Chan Kiu (Helen Ma) says as she mops the floor.

"Auntie Chuen, if Auntie Chi didn't profit, how do you think she would be able to pay for your salary?" Rose teases.

"Ma Chi, I want to work at 'Ka Yan' company," Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) abruptly says.

"What about your job in Shanghai?"

"That's right," Rose nudges.

"I feel that this 'Ka Yan' company holds keys that can unlock more memories."

"Well, you will have to talk to Mr. Wong about this then. This Ma Chi is powerless when it comes to 'Ka Yan' company!"

["Ka Yan" Company, Wong Sheung's Office]

"Mr. Wong," Ah Nin greets.

Wong Sheung (Lau Dan) glances up, "Oh, it's you. What do you want?"

Ah Nin sits down on the chair opposing Wong Sheung, "It's been a few years since I've been here, hasn't it?"

"How would you know? You don't know anything."

"Huh?"

"You have amnesia."

"I don't think that's relevant to our conversation."

"Were we having a conversation? I'm sorry, I must have missed it."

"Mr. Wong, what is wrong?"

"What is wrong? You try having a daughter whose heart is..." he stops himself, "What are you doing at my lowly company?"

"I don't understand what you're saying."

"You left 'Ka Yan' nearly three years ago because you wanted to try your luck in Shanghai. It's obvious that 'Ka Yan' is not good enough for you."

"Mr. Wong, I came today to apply for a job."

"There's no room in 'Ka Yan' company for you."

"But, Mr. Wong!"

"Kitty, please take this unwanted guest out."

"Mr. Wong!" Ah Nin protests.

[Wong Family House, Kitchen]

"7th sister, like this?" Joey (Bernice Liu) displays a wrapped dumpling in her hand.

"Very good," 7th sister (Teresa Ha) comments. She smiles at Joey, "Ever since you returned from Shanghai, you really did keep your promise to me. You've been home all day and have been helping me around the house!"

Joey grins, exposing her white teeth, "I want to make up for lost time!" Joey's cell phone rings. "Hello?"

"Joey," Ah Nin says.

Joey's heart thumps.

"Hello? Are you there?" he repeats.

Joey swallows and stutters, "I'm here."

"Joey, can you please meet me?"

"Meet you... alone?"

"I have to talk to you."

Joey's sweat drops onto the dumplings that she had been making.

"Is it not okay?" Ah Nin asks. "Are you busy? If so, I won't bother you."

"No, it's fine. I will see you in a bit."

Joey's heart flutters as she closes her phone.

"Leaving 7th sister, huh?"

"I'm sorry 7th sister! I'll be back later."

7th sister sighs, "When young people have love, it's impossible for them to remember anything else."

"It's uncertain whether or not there is love," Joey thinks to herself as she walks out of the kitchen.
