"Princess Cheung Ping," a eunuch (Johnny Tang) calls.
"Has Sai Hin arrived?" Cheung Ping (Kenix Kwok) asks.
A female voice cackles, "Do you think that you, a princess of the fallen Ming dynasty, can still have demands under the establishment of my Ching dynasty?" Out of the shadow appears the Ching emperor (Bernice Liu).
"But it's still peace time! Chiu Yan is supposed to be harming me! The Ming isn't supposed to fall until a few more years!"
"Time has changed and TVB doesn't like to keep storylines historically accurate."
"But..." Cheung Ping protests.
"However, because I am a kind and compassionate ruler, I will be fair to you. I will grant you a grand wedding to show your people that I honor and respect the Ming dynasty. You will be given a most festive marriage with the one that you love."
"To die with Sai Hin..." Cheung Ping thinks.
Suddenly, the scenery changes and Cheung Ping finds herself in a wedding attire in the garden of the imperial palace. Cherry blossom petals fall down from the trees. Servants prepare the mantle upon which she and Sai Hin would take their vows and then die with their fallen country. Cheung Ping looks around, "Where is Sai Hin?"
"In my arms," the Ching emperor appears. She kisses Sai Hin (Frankie Lam), who is dressed in a Ching concubine outfit. "My lovely concubine, Hin Fei. You will die alone, fair Princess Cheung Ping! Servants, feed her the poison!" The two dash off.
"Sai Hin!" Cheung Ping cries, "This is not the way it's supposed to be! You're supposed to die with me!" The servants force her to drink the poison wine. Cheung Ping vomits blood, "My perfect plan..."
[End of Dream]
Rose (Kenix Kwok) pants as she awakens from her nightmare. Her sheets were covered in sweat. It was 10:17 AM and Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) had left for work at "Ka Yan" company long before. She curses violently with dead air for fear that someone might hear if she actually yelled. The Kams were a troublesome and gossipy family. The entire seven million population of Hong Kong in a matter of hours would know anything that they knew. Rose felt so powerless. Hong Kong wasn't Shanghai. She didn't have her daddy or his entire ensemble of men to help her. Her cell phone rings. She smiles when she sees who the caller is, "Perhaps my luck has just turned around."
[Café]
"What did you find out, Michael?" Rose eagerly asks.
"Miss Suen, everything you need to know is in here," Michael (Kevin Cheng) slides a yellow packet towards her.
"I thank you for being so thoughtful and documenting everything, but I have no privacy here. If anyone catches me with this packet or if I'm caught off-guard reading it, my plan will be foiled. Just cut the crap and tell me what you know."
"'Ka Yan' company is owned and run by Roger, a friend of your father's. The company has been around for nearly thirty years. There are three branches. One is operated by Chris, another by Michelle, and the last by Athena. There are a total of three designers, two accountants, two managers, two office girls, one office boy, and one secretary. 'Ka Yan'..."
Rose laughs, "Michael, why are you telling me these things?"
"You told me to investigate 'Ka Yan' company for you."
"I want to know if there's any opening for me."
"It appears that it's full."
"Who are the designers?"
"Ah Sing works for Michelle, Joey works for Chris, and Athena has Ella."
"Do you think I can kick one of them out of the company and then take that place?"
"Joey is Roger's daughter."
"That's right... And Ah Sing is Chris's brother. What do you know about Ella?"
"Ella was hired by 'Ka Yan' company a few years ago."
"So she should be easy to bribe, right?"
"I suppose."
[Restaurant]
"Hello, Ella," Rose greets.
"Who are you?" Ella (Sharon Chan) asks.
"A friend."
"I don't know you?"
"But I know you. I've heard of your talents Ella. I want to help you."
Ella pulls out a chair, "Have you?"
"Of course. Your designers are very nice. It's a shame that your talents are wasted at 'Ka Yan' company."
"I needed the work and money desperately, so when 'Ka Yan' hired me, I accepted it."
"The world is such an unfair place."
Ella sighs, "Yes it is."
"Would you like to get out of 'Ka Yan' and work in a big company?"
"Who would willing play a minor role when they can take the lead role?"
"What would you say if I told you that I would hire you?"
Ella laughs, "I don't even know who you are."
Rose hands her a business card, "I'm Rose Suen, daughter of 'F&B' company in Shanghai."
Ella's eyes widen, "You're kidding."
"I'm not." Rose smiles.
"Oh my god! I've always admired your company! I can't believe you're offering me work!"
"'F&B' company likes to develop new talents. I don't want to see someone like you go to waste."
Ella smiles from ear to ear, "Finally, my luck is turning around! Someone appreciates my work!"
"All you have to do is quit 'Ka Yan' company today and go immediately to Shanghai."
"So fast?"
"Of course. My company is in dire need of a new fashion designer. Your creations are fresh and new."
"Sure thing!"
"It's far too easy to bribe a desperate soul. Damn, it wasn't even a challenge!" Rose thinks to herself.
["Ka Yan" Company, Wong Sheung's Office]
"Mr. Wong, I want to resign," Ella declares as she places a resignation letter on his desk.
"But you were doing so well! Why?"
"Let's just say that I hit a jackpot the other day."
"Is there anything I can do or say to make you stay?"
Ella shakes her head, "I'm afraid not."
"What a great lost to 'Ka Yan'!"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Wong."
Wong Sheung (Lau Dan) sighs. He was in another pinch.
[Outside of "Ka Yan" Company]
"I did it," Ella cheerfully announces to Rose, who had been waiting outside.
"I'm glad. Be safe on your way, now!" Rose waves. The time had come for her to make her entrance in "Ka Yan."
