Chapter 41

stranded

[Streets]

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) ran around Hong Kong like a crazy man trying to find Fiona (Sherming Yiu). Sweat poured down his forehead and soaked his shirt. His heart raced in his chest. He was petrified that something might have happened to her. He feared the worst and clenches his fist. "Where can you be, Fiona? Why did you run off without telling anyone anything? Why?"

Ah Sing looks up into the night sky and prays to the crescent moon, "Please protect her and make sure she's okay."

[Flashback]

Ah Sing and Fiona washed unconscious onto the shores of a sandy beach. The sun beat down on them and quickly dried their wet clothes. They had been thrown overboard during some abrupt rough waves and severe storms. Wind blew sand over the bodies of Ah Sing and Fiona. Only the sound of waves crashing onto the shore could be heard. The island was a bare and desolate place.

(Hours Later)

Ah Sing woke up with a headache. He examined his surroundings and wondered where he was. He notices a girl lying in the far distance. He runs to her. Fiona lay on the sand with her hair in wisps. Her make-up had smeared, but Ah Sing could tell that she was still a pretty girl. He watches her with a smile. Her sleeping seemed so innocent and baby-like.

Fiona awoke with a start. She screamed thinking that Ah Sing was a pervert. He backs off, weary that she had gotten a wrong impression. "It's not what you think," he stutters and stumbles.

"Not what I think? How else am I supposed to react to a strange man drooling at me?"

"Drooling? I'm not!" Ah Sing pauses and wipes drool from his mouth and flushes, "I had no malicious intentions!"

"Excuses! You men are pigs!" Fiona folds her arms and stomps away.

"Where are you going?"

"Far away from you!"

"There's nowhere to go! We're the only people here."

Fiona ignored him and continued to walk away. "How dare he gaze at a princess like me like that?”

Ah Sing shakes his head, "Women." He inhales the ocean's air deeply into his lungs. "Where the hell am I?" The only things in Ah Sing's sight were sand, cliffs, trees, and vast ocean waters. No trace of civilization could be found. He sighs. Abruptly, he hears a girl's scream. "It must be that girl from before," he says to himself and darts toward the path that Fiona had taken earlier.

He reaches Fiona and finds her trembling. "What happened?"

"I was walking and a bunch of mice and crabs started appearing all around me!"

"Really? That's good! We have food to eat then," Ah Sing teases.

"Disgusting!"

"Hey, food is food."

Fiona pouts at Ah Sing, "You're so mean!" The pout recalls to Ah Sing's memories the same pout that Ah Lam (Linda Chung) had given him when he called her cold and money-hungry.

"First you call me a pervert and now you claim that I'm mean? I'll leave then!"

"No!" Fiona shouts. She stutters, "Don't leave me. I don't want to be alone."

"I'm such a nasty person, aren't I? Then why would you want me to stay around you?"

"Please," Fiona begs.

Ah Sing notices the formation of tears around Fiona's eyes. "All right, I'll stop teasing you."

"Why are we here?"

"Fate brought us together on this island!"

"You said you would stop!"

Ah Sing laughs, "Okay, okay! We were thrown off-board and somehow drifted onto this island."

"Oh my god! What are we going to do then?"

"I'm sure they'll send people out to find us when they notice that we're missing."

"What if they don't?"

"Then we'll have to spend the rest of our lives on this island."

"I can't believe this. If we were thrown off-board, why couldn't we just drown and die? I don't want to be stranded!"

"Don't be so hopeless!"

"There's no one here!"

"That doesn't mean they can't find us."

Fiona bawls, "I'm going to die here!"

"No, you're not. You have me."

"You? What can you do?"

"I can hunt and make fire! We'll survive."

"I don't want to eat rats."

Ah Sing sticks out his tongue, "Neither do I!"

Fiona chuckles.

"Finally, you smile."

Fiona wipes the tears from her face with the sleeves of her shirt.

"Don't you think we should get to know each other?"

Fiona nods weakly, "I'm Fiona."

Ah Sing sticks out his hand, "You can call me 'Ah Sing.'"

"'Sing' like the stars in the skies?"

"Yes. See, I told you that you'd be okay with me. I'll be like the North Star and guide you home."

Fiona smiles sweetly. She felt comfortable and secure with him.

"Now time to catch those rats!"
