Seeking Happiness

Chapter 42

a spark of love

[Mystery Island]

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) and Fiona (Sherming Yiu) roast fishes, skewed onto fallen wooden sticks, over a rosy, small fire. Ah Sing grins, "After hours of trying, we finally got a fire going!" Fiona gives him a smile. He exhales and wipes his forehead, "It sure was tiring finding all of these branches and rubbing the sticks until a fire ignited! It's too bad my glasses got washed away into the water otherwise it would have been much faster."

Fiona nods, "At least we started a fire though, I was getting worried that it was impossible!"

"Nothing is impossible with a lucky 'star'," Ah Sing winks.

The night sky was full of stars. The disappearance of the sun had made conditions on the island colder.

"I think our fishes are done!" Ah Sing declares.

Fiona sniffs a whiff of the aroma, "Are you sure this is edible?"

"I think so. It's better than eating rats, right?"

Fiona laughs, "Right." She takes a bite into the crispy skin of the fish and its smoked, soft flesh. Steam rose from the spot where she had bitten.

"It's a good thing we found that piece of rock and glass and scaled and gutted the fish first."

Fiona agrees, "It's actually not bad."

"Some seasoning would be nice..."

"It'll be nicer if we weren't stranded here," Fiona adds.

After finishing their dinner, Fiona and Ah Sing decide to rest. They choose sleeping spots close enough so that they could reach each other quickly if anything should happen, but not too close that they were intimate. Hours passed and soon it was morning.

"Good morning, Fiona," Ah Sing calls, noticing her approaching him during his morning stretches.

"How was your sleep?" she questions.

He replies, "I'm not used to sleeping on the sand and it was pretty cold!"

Fiona nods her head, "I think we should find big leaves or something to use as sheets."

"Yeah, we should look around to find things to use."

(Hours Later)

"Ah Sing, Ah Sing!" Fiona yells.

"What is it?"

"Look what I found!" She shows him a white volleyball stained with dirt.

"It's a volleyball! This means that someone else was here!"

"But where is he or she now?"

"Maybe they got rescued!"

Fiona quietly comments, "Or maybe they died."

"Don't think that!"

"Why would there be a volleyball around and no owner? Maybe this is the only thing left of their existence."

"We've seen no skeletons around here."

"I don't know. I think this is an omen that we're not going to survive."

Ah Sing grabs the volleyball from Fiona. "No!" he shouts, "This has brought us hope!"

"Hope?"

"Judging from the way this volleyball looks, I don't think it's that old."

Fiona gives him a puzzled and unconvinced look.

He continues, "This means that whoever owned the volleyball must have been stranded not too long ago and got rescued, leaving it behind. I'm sure of it." Ah Sing runs to the ocean and cleans the volleyball, wiping away all of the dirt. The volleyball shone white once more. "See?" he shows Fiona the ball.

"You're right, I'm sure we'll get rescued."

"That's the spirit! Even if we don't, we won't be bored and can play a game of volleyball!"

"Really? Are you any good?"

"Good? Of course! Want to play a match against me?"

Fiona grabs the ball and serves it into the air, "Whoever loses catches dinner tonight!"

"Well, you better pray that you lose otherwise I'll be catching rats for you to eat!" Ah Sing teases.

Fiona and Ah Sing enjoyed an afternoon of laughter and an exciting game of volleyball. They could sense that dusk was approaching and decided to end their game. After countless of matches, no clear winner was decided. They concluded that they would play again tomorrow to see who the victor would be.

"You're good, Fiona!" Ah Sing compliments.

"Volleyball is my court's sport," Fiona confesses.

"Your court?"

"Yes."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I don't usually tell people this, but I'm actually a princess."

Ah Sing playfully pushes her, "Get out of here!"

"I'm serious! I'm known as 'Princess Fiona'."

"Stop lying!"

"I'm not. My father is the king of a small island in Europe."

Ah Sing scoffs, "Whatever! Even if you're a princess, you'll still have to help me catch dinner!"

(Nighttime)

Fiona could not sleep that night. Even though she felt a tad warmer with a blanket of leaves, she still felt cold. She missed the comfort of a bed and sheets. She sighs. Counting sheep didn't help her tonight. She sees Ah Sing turning back and forth from afar and decides to join him. Ah Sing hears approaching footsteps and was about to pounce on whoever it was until he realizes it was Fiona. He laughs, "You like scaring me, don't you?"

"You shouldn't be so paranoid!"

"It's late, why aren't you asleep?"

"You're not sleeping either."

"I know." Ah Sing exhales loudly, "I just can't sleep."

"It's our second night here."

"Fiona, do you believe that we'll get out of here?"

"You said we would and I believe you, so we will."

Ah Sing is surprised, "Do you really?"

"I do."

"Well, since we can't sleep, why don't you join me and we'll chat until sunrise?"

Fiona smiles, "Okay."

"So, 'princess,' what's the whole ordeal of your kingdom?"

"Even though I believe you, you don't believe me."

"It's incredible to think that there are still 'royal' people around."

"England still has a royal family. Did you forget Princess Diana?"

"In any case, you're pretty enough to be a princess."

Fiona blushes bright red, "Well, I'm glad to know I'm worthy of the title!"

Ah Sing moves his finger around in the sand, "I suppose you wouldn't believe my story either."

Fiona raises an eyebrow, "Try me."

"Would you believe that I was separated from my birth mother for thirty years?"

"Wow, and how old are you?"

"Thirty."

"So you were separated from her since birth or something?"

"My grandmother gave me away when I was only a few days old."

Fiona gasps, "That's horrible!"

"She didn't want me to be a burden for my mother."

"Oh?"

"You see, my father and mother were supposed to be married. In fact, part of the reason my father wanted to marry my mother so quickly was because he felt bad for sleeping with her. In those days, sex meant a lot more than it does today. They were going to marry until my mother's best friend used trickery to steal my father from my mother. My mother, being as kind as she was, couldn't bear to do anything and let my father marry this woman. You see, she claimed that he had raped her! It pisses me off that someone could be so cruel, especially to their best friend. Anyways, my mother discovered that she was pregnant after my father had already married the other woman. She didn't want to break them apart, so she kept the pregnancy to herself and silently suffered."

Fiona is speechless.

Ah Sing continues his story, "After my mother gave birth to me, she was very weak. My grandmother used this and put me up for adoption. My mother was insistent on raising me and giving me the best, even without a father. She was a policewoman with a bright future; my grandmother didn't want me to ruin this future for her." He pauses and concludes, "I met up with her recently and we were reunited."

"Wow. I don't know what to say."

"It's quite unbelievable, but it's true."

"It's nice that you were able to meet her again, though."

Ah Sing smiles, "It is... but I don't know if we'll be separated again."

"Again?"

"We're stranded on this island, aren't we?" he laughs.

"You'll see her again... for sure." Fiona pats Ah Sing's shoulder and rubs his back.

Ah Sing's body shook at the sensation of Fiona's warm hand. He gazes deeply into her eyes, which sparkled from the light of the moon and stars. He hadn't felt this feeling since he had last seen Ah Lam (Linda Chung). He gulps. "Am I falling for her?" Ah Sing asks himself.
