The chirping of birds and bugs became louder as the skies glowed a rosy mix of orange and red above the horizon. Morning was quickly approaching, but the conversation between Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) and Fiona (Sherming Yiu) was far from over. "Ever since I was little," Fiona continues, "I've always loved riding on the swings."
"How come?"
"I just feel so free! It's almost as if I'm flying." She stretches out her arms and moves it around like an airplane.
"Do you not feel free often?"
"I'm always being watched."
Ah Sing raises an eyebrow, "Oh, right, your 'princess' ordeal."
Fiona sighs, "To be honest, I went on this cruise to get away from it all. Even though I was in Germany, my father still had guards following me and seeing what I was up to every second," she laughs, "I guess I got what I wanted! Now I'm totally free."
"The irony!"
"I know. Now I wish there were people around me to help me get off this island, but..."
"We don't need anyone! We have ourselves!" Ah Sing declares.
"Ourselves?"
Ah Sing stands up, "It's morning already! Let's get working!"
"On what?"
"To get off this island!"
Ah Sing and Fiona race each other up to the highest cliff on the island. "I win!" Ah Sing grins widely.
"No fair!" Fiona pouts, "You started earlier! You had an advantage!"
"We'll race back down and I'll let you have an even greater head start, how about that?"
"Okay!" Fiona places her hands on her hips, "What are we doing here, Ah Sing?"
"We have to let someone know we're here."
"How?"
"Well, from what I've seen in movies and read in books, people who are stranded on islands build fires on the highest point so that people will see the smoke and come and rescue them. That's what we're going to do!"
"Oh, clever!"
Ah Sing laughs, "I'm taking the TVB route and copying other people's ideas."
"We'll need more wood," Fiona comments, "I'll go down and get us some more."
"I'll set things up here and get a fire started. Who knows how long that'll take?"
After hours of attempts, Ah Sing and Fiona finally started a big fire on top of the cliff. Gray smoke rose up to the skies. The two smile at each other. "Well," Ah Sing comments, "Now we won't have such a hard time cooking today. We can just use the fire from this one to ignite others."
"Considering that this fire took five hours, I would say it was a wise investment." Fiona yawns.
"You're tired."
"I haven't slept all night!"
"You should take a nap. Don't worry. I'll be on guard if anything happens."
"Thanks," Fiona smiles and lies down on the ground to sleep. Within minutes she was fast asleep.
Ah Sing beams at the sleeping Fiona, "You really are tired."
(Hours Later)
Fiona awakens from her nap and hears only the sound of wood cackling in the fire. She panics when she doesn't see Ah Sing around. She is assuaged when she notices that the fire has been fed a fresh batch of wood. "He must still be around then," she thinks to herself. She gets up and dashes down the cliff. Fiona slows down when she notices him crouching down with his back turned to her at the bottom of the cliff, among the mass of forest. She ambles quietly and taps his shoulder, "Boo!"
Ah Sing is startled and quickly stands up, hiding something in his hands behind his back.
"What were you doing?" Fiona is curious.
"Nothing."
"What do you have in your hand?"
"I wanted to surprise you, but you snuck up on me." He instructs, "Close your eyes and spread out your hands."
Fiona grins as she shuts her eyes, "All right." She was excited and wondered what it could be. Ah Sing drops something warm and soft onto her palms. Fiona's eyes widen and she quickly shakes the mouse off her hands. She shrieks and jumps onto Ah Sing as the mouse scurries away. Ah Sing laughs. Fiona blushes and jumps off of him. "You're so mean!"
"Well, you ruined the initial surprise, so I had to think of something else." Fiona crosses her arms and turns her back to him. He stretches his right arm and unveils a small swing in front of Fiona's eyes. She gasps and admires the small contraption. "This," Ah Sing explains, "Was what I was working on."
"Oh my goodness," Fiona awes. She fingers the small swing and closely examines it. The swing was connected to a long twig at the top. The small seat was made of a smaller twig that was shorter in length and longer in width. She chains of the swings were made of vines. "It's beautiful."
"I tried to make a life-size swing... but," Ah Sing chuckles, "That didn't exactly work out the way I wanted it to. Even though this swing is small, your fingers can ride on it. I'll wait until we're off the island and take you to ride swings that your whole body can enjoy."
Fiona is moved, "Thank you. You're so sweet!" She felt her heart pound seeing how shy and sincere Ah Sing looked.
(Nighttime)
"What a long day we've had!" Fiona stretches her arms and yawns.
"You?" Ah Sing scoffs, "What about me? I haven't slept for like two days! You had a nap."
"You were the one who insisted that I took a rest! I could have stayed up with you."
"Just because I urged it didn't mean you had to do it!"
"Fine! We'll stay up tonight and see who lasts longer!"
"No thanks! I need to sleep! We can't possibly not sleep two nights in a row."
"Well, I'll be over there," Fiona points, "To sleep, so if you need anything just call me or come over."
Ah Sing grabs her hand, "Wait."
Fiona's face flushes and turns hot.
"Don't leave tonight. You don't have to sleep so far."
"It's not good," she protests, "We can't sleep together."
"Who said anything about that? You can just sleep near me. I won't do anything."
"All right."
That night, Fiona found the warmth she felt a void of the other night. She slept smoothly and had a deep slumber.
(Next Day, Afternoon)
Fiona sat the ledge of the cliff playing with the swing that Ah Sing made for her. He had gone off to find more wood for their fire. For some reason, Fiona couldn't get the image of Ah Sing out of her head. As she played with the swing, she kept imaging the two of them riding a swing together.
"Fiona!" Ah Sing calls to let her know that he had returned.
"Hey!" Fiona beams. As she gets up, she loses her grip on the swing. Fiona hastily reaches for it, but in the process, loses her balance and falls down from the cliff! She screams and there's a loud splash. Ah Sing drops the pile of wood in his hands. Without thinking, he jumps off from the cliff!
