Chapter 47

threat

["La-Go-Go" Restaurant]

Joey (Bernice Liu) appeared in front of the doors of "La-Go-Go" restaurant promptly at 6:00 PM. As soon as 5:00 PM hit, Rose (Kenix Kwok) was the first person to dash out of "Ka Yan" company. She didn't even bother to wait for Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) or anyone else. Joey had gone home to change. She tied her sleek, black hair into a bun and over it she wore a big hat. She changed into a hoodie and a pair of jeans. To finish off her look, she added a pair of big sunglasses. Joey hoped that no one would be able to recognize her.

She inhales deeply and walks into "La-Go-Go." Through her shaded sunglasses, she gave the restaurant a thorough survey. She couldn't find Rose, but she spotted Ah Hoi (Michael Tong) sitting alone, obviously waiting for his guest.

"Excuse me, do you have a reservation?" the receptionist asks Joey.

"Of course. Liu Bik Yee's the name." Joey had taken a fake name just in case.

"Are you Bernice Liu Bik Yee?" the receptionist (Shirley Yeung) exclaims.

Joey blushes, "No!" She was worried that this would bring attention to her.

"Well, you look quite suspicious with the sunglasses and hat," the receptionist comments. She leans towards Joey and whispers, "I understand. Before you leave, just give me your signature. I promise I won't let anyone bother you!"

Joey is flustered, "I'm not Bernice!"

"Right. Just one, miss?"

Joey nods.

"Over here," the receptionist leads Joey to a table conveniently next to where Ah Hoi was sitting!

"Thank you," Joey smiles.

"The waiter will be with you shortly to take your order. Have a good dinner."

"What luck I have!" Joey grins, "Now I'll be sure to hear what it is that Rose tells Ah Hoi."

After Joey places her order, another strange figure enters "La-Go-Go." The girl looked incredibly outlandish. She had two braided pigtails tied with two red ribbons. Like Joey, she wore big sunglasses. A childish dress completed the girl's attire. Joey wanted to laugh. "How old does she think she is? It's winter for crying aloud!" She shakes her head, "Some people..."

The girl heads towards Ah Hoi's table. Joey gasps realizing that this girl was Rose! "Lordy," she comments.

Ah Hoi blinks, "Who are you?"

"Ah Hoi, it's me," Rose answers.

"My, my. Aren't I lucky to have Miss Suen change her look just to see me. Tell me, how can you go out into the streets wearing something like that? What will people think of you? Then again, it won't matter what they think, especially after I tell them..."

"What are you talking about?"

"You know why I'm here."

"I don't. Our deal was completed and over months ago."

"Is it really? Miss Suen, I don't think it is."

Rose was furious. "Ah Hoi!"

"Yes, Miss Suen?"

"Oh, look who've come..." Ah Hoi points to the door.

Rose's eyeballs nearly drop to the floor. The Kams were heading into the restaurant one-by-one.

"Now, are you ready to talk business?" Ah Hoi laughs.

"Bastard!" Rose mumbles.

"But don't you worry. I've arranged for them to sit on the other end of the restaurant. They won't hear a word that we say... unless you don't cooperate and I 'accidentally' let it slip to their ears," Ah Hoi threatens.

"This is about money, isn't it?" Rose demands.

"Smart."

"What the hell? I gave you $250,000 last time for doing 'that thing.' What more do you want?"

"Is this secret not that valuable to you?"

Rose clenches her fists tighter. She was about to blow.

"Mr. Kam is over there. What would he think of you if..."

Rose interrupts, "Enough! How much do you want? Another $250,000?"

Ah Hoi laughs, "Miss Suen, do you think I would come all the way to Hong Kong for a mere $250,000?"

"Damn it! Tell me how much you want then!"

"It's amazing how you can sound so angry and look so gentle at the same time."

"Tell me the freaking price!"

Joey was shocked. "Is this the same Rose that I know?" she thinks to herself.

"$500,000," Ah Hoi says.

"Ridiculous!"

"Miss Suen, your family in Shanghai has millions. What is a measly $500,000? If you don't remember, a couple months ago, you hired me to do not one, but two jobs. Coincidentally, both jobs involved a car and Mr. Kam. After the second job, Mr. Kam saw you as his savior. How will your image to him change if he finds out the truth?"

"Shut up!" Rose bitterly orders.

"So, what are you going to do? I suggest you hurry up and decide. There are a lot of people here, including the noisy and gossipy Kam family."

"Fine. Meet me tomorrow morning at the airport."

Rose stomps out of "La-Go-Go" in fury.

Ah Hoi smirks.

Joey is stunned. She couldn't believe what just happened and what she had heard.

"Aiya!" Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) exclaims, "Some people just don't know how to dress! Seeing creeps like the girl that just walked out is bad for my babies! How embarrassing!"

"Ah Nin, where's Rose?" Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) inquires.

"She went to the spa. She said she needed a facial and to get refreshed or something," Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) answers.

"What a shame! She missed this rich meal!" Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) exclaims.

"You're really clueless. Rose is the daughter of the Suen family in Shanghai. She has eaten much more valuable foods than what this place has to offer! In fact, I believe that she finds abalone and shark's fin bland now!" Ah Lo asserts.

"Speaking of Rose, how did you meet her big brother? I'm curious to hear of your love story with her!" Ah Yat says.

"My love story with Rose?"

"Behind every couple is a story!" Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) says. "Like me and Gam Gam," she adds in a dreamy voice.

"Well, big brother?"

"Was it a one-night stand that turned into a relationship?" Gam (Louis Yuen) asks.

"Ah Gam! Don't speak so dirty!" Nim Chi scolds.

"Tell us, big brother!" Ah Yat urges.

Ah Nin scratches his head, "I suppose I fell in love with her because she was by my side when I woke up from my coma."

"Coma?" Ah Yat gasps.

"That's right, Rose told me about this when I first met her. She said that Ah Nin got into a car accident and was in a coma for three months. She said she stayed by Ah Nin's side the whole time and even helped him through therapy and everything," Nim Chi adds.

"Oh my... it seems you've been through a lot when you were away from home, big brother!" Ah Yat comments.

Ah Nin smiles, "How could I not fall for a girl who was by my side when I was down? If it wasn't for her, I wonder if you guys can talk to this 'big brother' now."

"How touching!"

"Did you meet Rose before you were in a coma?" Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) questions.

"I'm not sure..." Ah Nin admits.

"Rose told me that they were friends," Nim Chi answers for Ah Nin.

"That's right, big brother's memories haven't fully recovered yet," Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) says.

"Fiona, how are things coming along?" Nim Chi inquires.

"Fine. Auntie is teaching me how to cook and I've been out and about exploring Hong Kong these days. It's fun."

"By yourself?"

"Being a modern woman means being independent," Fiona (Sherming Yiu) smiles, "Like mother-in-law."

Ah Sing laughs, "Where did you learn that?"

Fiona grabs Ah Sing's ear and says, "Are you looking down on me? Don't doubt a woman's capabilities!"

"Who's teaching you these things?" Ah Sing asks.

"Ah Lo!" Fiona sticks out her tongue and giggles.

Ah Sing thinks to himself, "Out of all the modern women that she could choose from, she chooses to learn from Ah Lo!"
