Chapter 62

debate over adoption

[Sek Family Apartment, 11th brother & Sa Sa's Bedroom]

In their dim-lighted room, Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen) snuggles up with 11th brother (Lee Kwok Lun).

"How was work today?" Sa Sa inquires.

"The newbies had constant NG's," 11th brother answers. He sighs and continues, "It's okay though. I remember when I was a newbie and had NG's too, so I understand. They must be feeling nervous. However, I feel they have talent and time will mold them."

"Really? Even the Miss Hong Kong actresses?"

11th brother replies, "I don't want to gossip about my co-workers."

Sa Sa nods her head in understanding, "As long as my husband does a great job, that's all that matters to me!"

"So, how is the adoption process coming along?"

"I finally made a decision."

"Who is it going to be? Boy? Girl?"

"It's a girl... ten-years-old," Sa Sa says.

11th brother is surprised, "So old? I thought you wanted a much younger child."

"I did, but I felt so bad after I read her biography."

"Oh?"

Sa Sa tells the story of the girl's life, "She's called 'Ling-ling.' Her mother was weak in health, but insisted that she have a child for her husband because she knew that he wanted a child badly. She went into premature labor and didn't survive. The doctors could only save the baby, which had to be incubated for nearly three months. When Ling-ling was born, she was so tiny that the doctors feared she would die eventually because of the premature birth. The father was devastated and hated himself for making it so clear to his wife how strongly he desired a baby. He came to reluctantly accept what happened and put all of his love into Ling-ling. He would come to the hospital every day to check her progress. Luckily, she made it and could be sent home. The father and daughter lived happily for the next eight years."

"What happened that caused her to be an orphan?" 11th brother anxiously interrupts.

"I'm getting there," Sa Sa continues, "The week before his daughter's ninth birthday, he wanted to buy her a computer. Ling-ling was a bright girl fascinated with technology. He went to the bank to get the money to buy the present. That day, however, there was a stick-up and he was killed in a shooting that erupted at the bank. From that day, Ling-ling has become an orphan."

11th brother is stunned by the story.

"That is why I just had to adopt her. Ling-ling deserves a good home and we can provide that."

"Yes, we definitely can. That poor girl! Bless her heart," 11th brother sighs.

Sa Sa shows 11th brother her picture, "Isn't she cute?"

"She is, but it wouldn't have mattered whether she was beautiful or not. You made a great choice, honey."

[Kam Family Apartment, Gam & Ying Gei's Bedroom]

Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) closes the door with her back, disrupting Gam's (Louis Yuen) reading of his gambling magazine.

"Einstein?"

"Gam Gam, I want a favor."

Ying Gei dims the light.

Gam laughs pervertedly and shuts his magazine, "Why didn't you open your mouth and tell me earlier?" He runs up and hugs her tightly.

"Gam Gam! Why are you holding me so tightly?"

"Didn't you want to 'make people' tonight?"

Ying Gei shakes her head.

"What? Why not?" Gam demands.

"We need to save that energy..." Ying Gei flashes a stack of photographs of babies in front of Gam's eyes as if they were playing cards.

"Don't tell me you're opening a babysitting service to earn extra money!"

"I'm a high-paid secretary at 'Ka Yan,' why would I need to do that?"

"Oh god!" Gam covers his eyes, "Don't tell me you want a baby so badly that you've become crazy and want to take care of other people's babies for free! If so, don't do it! Do you know how expensive babies are? If you want to play with babies, then play with Fu jai and Gwai mui! No strings attached!"

Ying Gei shakes her head again, "One of these babies is going to be our child."

"What are you talking about? Our child hasn't even been planted yet!"

"I want to adopt!"

"Adopt? No way! I'm not raising another person's child."

"You were adopted by 7th sister!" Ying Gei declares.

"That's different! She's a woman!"

"So am I."

"But I'm not. I refuse to raise another man's baby."

"These children are so pitiful! Don't be so cold. They need a home."

"Other people can provide them with a home. We're still young and can have our own."

"You're nearing forty and I'm over forty. We're not kids anymore."

"There are still people who have children at our age!"

"What's so bad about adoption? We're saving a life and if we can't have our own, we will still have someone to take care of us when we're old."

"Who dares to say that Lau Gam can't have his own children?"

"Gam Gam, we can't deny the fact that we've tried for over a year with no results. Ah Lo and Ah Yuet have four already."

"They are ten years younger than us! We can't compare to them."

"Gam Gam, let's just adopt and if I get pregnant later, we can take care of our own child in addition to our adopted one."

"Do you think we have endless money? If we adopt, who will stay home to raise the child? You will have to stop working or hire a babysitter. Either way, we're losing money! Is it worth it for someone who isn't of our blood? It'll be like taking in a homeless person and giving him all of our money."

"They will grow to love us and repay us when they're older!"

"Who says so? What if they become rotten and try to harm us? What if they take and don't give back? Non-blood-related people can't be trusted!"

"You're blood-related to your family and yet they still don't trust you," Ying Gei rebuts.

"It's not a good idea, Einstein. I refuse to give my consent."

Ying Gei frowns, "Gam Gam! I really want a child."

He comforts her, "We can have our own. I promise you."

"We've tried for too long... maybe we're infertile."

"I forbid you from saying that!" He shuts off the lights completely and leans toward Ying Gei, "We are competent."

For those who might not realize it, the actual VOH series (both versions) is a big social commentary, making its mark and discussing several issues that effect society. So, how could I not include this aspect into my fanfic? Adoption is the first issue that I've discussed in the fanfic. Anyways, to make things a little more interactive, what do you feel about adoption? Will you adopt? I presented the two sides to the adoption issue. The first, of course, is the meaningfulness of the action and how useful it is for people who can't or don't want to have their own children. The second (presented more humorously) is the fears/risks with having an adopted child.
