For the past two years, Ah San (Steven Ma) had labored vigorously to rebuild his family's business, which was driven to near bankruptcy by his uncle, Sze Mo. Ah San smiles remembering the days when he felt so devastated because his uncle had stolen his fortune. Had it not been for the Kams and Ah Lam (Linda Chung), Ah San would not have gotten back to where he is. They supported him and gave him hope when he had none.
Ah San especially loves Ah Lam because she was willing to sacrifice her own happiness so that he would regain his will and determination for success. Whenever he needed her, Ah Lam was always there with a smile and a word of encouragement.
"Mr. Sze, Mr. Kwok of 'Kwok Corporation' wants to make an appointment with you," secretary Yoyo (Nnadia Chan) announces as she walks into Ah San's office. She had begun working with "Sze Corporation" since Ah San regained control of his family's company. Ah San was impressed with her and hired her instantly after meeting her.
"What day am I free?"
"Not until the week after the next."
"Really? Do I have appointments all of next week?"
"No. Don't you remember what next week is?"
Ah San checks his calendar and smacks his forehead, "How could I forget!"
Yoyo nods, "It's Mrs. Sze's birthday week."
"Thanks for reminding me, Yoyo. Set the appointment with Mr. Kwok for the earliest date that I'm free."
"It's my job," she winks and walks back out.
Lately, Ah San had spent more time in his office than in his enormous mansion. He felt bad for leaving Ah Lam alone, but she insisted that business was more important. She didn't want him to lose business because of her and urged him to make his company even bigger.
Even though Ah San had accepted Ah Lam's request, he still felt uneasy. He wondered how cold and lonely his wife must feel having to spend so much time alone facing a big mansion of nothingness.
Ah San decides that he must make Ah Lam feel special and begins plotting a surprise for her birthday.
[Kam Family Apartment]
"So tired!"
The "Ka Yan" employees collapse on the couch.
Fiona (Sherming Yiu) walks out of the kitchen with a plate of sliced oranges and places it on the coffee table. "Eat up!"
Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) is surprised, "Fiona, you're up here so soon?"
"I came to help mother-in-law with preparing dinner. It's bad if we just came for dinner and don't help with anything!"
Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) nods her head, "That's right. My big big daughter-in-law is very responsible!"
"Why does everyone look so tired?" Fiona questions.
"Try working at 'Ka Yan' and you'll see! These days, it has been crazy," Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) says.
Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) sighs, "The company has gone nuts. Sometimes we're so free and restless because there's no business and then at other times business just comes rushing in like a waterfall. I'm about to explode!"
"Shouldn't you guys be happy? Good business means you guys will have a paycheck!" Fiona insists.
"We're paid the same regardless of the amount of workload." Gam (Louis Yuen) rolls out his tongue, "My tongue is so sore from licking so many stamps and envelopes!"
Ah Yuet agrees, "Even if there's a bonus, the majority of it would go towards big brother, Miss Man, and Michelle. We're only underdogs!"
"Don't think that way! The company is good because of all of us," Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) corrects.
"That's because you're near the top, big brother."
"Instead of complaining, you guys should be happy that the company is thriving again. If 'Ka Yan' had continued to go without all of these new business contracts, it might have closed and we would all not have a job!" Rose (Kenix Kwok) says.
"Whatever. All I know is that I need to see my babies!" Ah Lo gets up and calls, "Foon Foon, Hei Hei, Fu jai, Gwai mui! Mommy's home."
The phone abruptly rings. Nim Chi picks it up and answers, "Hello?"
"Ma Chi!" Ah San had begun calling Nim Chi "Ma Chi" after she adopted him as a godson.
"Ah San! It's been a long time since I talked to you. How are you?"
"I've been good. How are you?"
"I'm old, how else could I feel?" Nim Chi laughs. "It's been great. My whole family is together again."
"That's great. I guess you will forget about this godson then!"
"No, it's you who might forget this godmother. You should come over to dinner sometime."
"I would love to, but I'm so busy these days."
"Business again?"
"Yeah."
"Ah San, you shouldn't work too hard. Rest now and then. I would like to see you."
"Same here."
"How are things with Ah Lam?"
"Okay."
"Just 'okay?'"
"Next week is her birthday. I want to plan a big surprise for her," Ah San confesses.
"Sounds fun."
"You guys are all invited."
"We'll definitely come."
"Good. It's Ah Lam's big thirtieth birthday! See you then."
"All right, love you." Nim Chi hangs up the phone.
"Was that Hill siu (Master Hill)?" Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) asks.
Nim Chi nods, "Yeah. He invited us to go to Ah Lam's birthday party next week."
"I can't believe it's almost two years since Michelle's 'twenty-eight' scare," Ah Yat says.
Ah Sing asks, "What scare?"
Ah Yat explains, "The Hung family have a hereditary heart disease and no one lives pass his or her twenty-eighth birthday. Michelle was worried that she also had this disease. When Hill siu confessed that he loved her, she had to push him away and pretend that she was cold and only cared for money. She wanted him to better himself and forget about her because they wouldn't have a future since she thought she would die soon. It turns out that Michelle's father is not her father. Rather, her mother was pregnant by another man who left to study overseas."
"Really?"
"Yes. That's why Michelle doesn't have a heart disease and lived until now! I'm so happy. Hill siu and Michelle are perfect together."
Ah Sing is shocked. He never knew that such a thing had happened.
"Really though," Ah Yat continues, "How could someone really believe that Michelle is so cold-hearted? She's such a sweet girl! She paid for Ah Wong's education and was willing to let go of her own happiness for Hill siu."
"She's horrible!" Ah Lo says as she comes out holding Gwai mui with Foon Foon and Hei Hei trailing behind.
"Why do you say that?"
"She's always talking about business and making us work!"
"That's what you're supposed to do at a job," Ah Yat rolls her eyes.
Ah Sing is speechless. He remembers his own experiences with Ah Lam before their break-up and wonders if it had any connection with Ah Lam's 28-scare of two years ago. "Ah Lam..." he thinks to himself.
"The story about Hill siu and Michelle sounds like quite a roller coaster!" Fiona comments.
Nim Chi replies, "It was. Plus, we mustn't forget about Ah San's fiancée, Vivian. It was crazy and unpredictable who would end up with Ah San!"
"So much has happened between Michelle and Hill siu. I'm glad they're finally together and happily married," Ah Yat smiles.
Ah Sing frowns because of the newly formed mystery in his head.
The doorbell rings. Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) gets up to open it. Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen) and 11th brother (Lee Kwok Lun) wave and enter the apartment.
"We decided to eat off of you guys tonight!" 11th brother jokes.
"Fiona asked us to come over to try her cooking. It's not everyday that she cooks for a big crowd, so I'll have to try and see if she mastered my skills! Ah Sing, your wife is great!" Sa Sa winks at Fiona.
Ah Sing is taken back into reality, "What was that?"
"Auntie praised me," Fiona replies.
"Of course! I married a princess."
"Ah Sing!" Nim Chi hisses.
"What?"
"Big big brother, you told us to never remind big big sister-in-law of her past and yet you just called her 'princess,'" Ah Yat answers.
Fiona laughs, "It's okay! His nickname for me is 'princess' anyways! I really don't mind."
"Ying Gei, how's the adoption going?" Sa Sa asks.
Ying Gei blushes, "Don't mention that!"
"Oh! So you're the one who planted that idea into her head!" Gam points his finger at Sa Sa.
"It's a good solution because you can't get her pregnant!" Sa Sa fights back.
"Wait! What's going on? Ying Gei's adopting?" Nim Chi is perplexed.
"No!" Sa Sa shakes her head, "I am."
"You? Why? I thought you and 11th brother wanted to have kids."
"We do... and the best solution is to adopt." 11th brother shows Nim Chi a picture of Ling-ling.
"She's cute!" Nim Chi smiles.
"Our adoption papers are being processed now. We'll have to wait a few weeks with the legal processes and all. But we'll have a new member to our family soon!" Sa Sa grins. "I can't wait to give Ling-ling the home that she deserves."
"Her story is sad," 11th brother says.
"Oh?"
They move towards the couch and 11th brother repeats the story that Sa Sa told him the other day.
"It's great that you finally chose who you wanted to adopt," Ying Gei smiles.
"You need to stop corrupting her mind!" Gam orders.
"You need to treat her better! Ying Gei, if he messes with you, tell me! I'll get him for you."
"Gam Gam loves me. He treats me well!"
Sa Sa rolls her eyes, joins the crowd on the couch, and mutters, "Love is truly blind."
