"There you guys are!" Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) exclaims as he and Fiona (Sherming Yiu) enter "Tung Mat Yuen" to find their whole family along with Ah San (Steven Ma). "We went upstairs to find you guys, but no one was home."
"Ah Sing! Why are you soaked?" Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) gets up from the cash register to look over her son.
"I took a night swim!" Ah Sing chuckles.
"In the middle of winter? Are you crazy big big brother?" Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) asks.
"It was an indoor pool, in the swimming centre where I work at," Fiona explains.
"Big big sister-in-law, you work?" Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) is surprised.
"Yeah. I've been working as a swimming teacher for a few weeks now."
"You never mentioned it to us," Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) observes.
"Well," Fiona confesses, "I figured it wasn't that important that I should share it with everyone."
"It's good that Fiona is out making a living instead of being a housewife," Rose (Kenix Kwok) smiles.
"How's your job?" Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) questions.
"Pretty okay. I have a few classes a day to teach and they're all little kids, so it's fine."
"That's great!" Ah Lo beams. "This means when Foon Foon and Hei Hei are a little older, we can get them swimming lessons with a discount! You'll hook us up, right big big sister-in-law? You know that swimming is crucial and you don't want to deprive your nephews!"
Fiona laughs nervously, "Sure."
"Thank you!"
Ah San sat lifelessly on his chair. Ah Sing decides to comfort him. "Hey."
Ah San looks up, "Oh. Hey."
"Don't feel too down! Ah Lam will come back soon."
"How do you know?"
Ah Sing pats Ah San's shoulder, "Trust me."
[Sze Family Mansion]
Ah Lam drives into her parkway and is puzzled at the dead sight that lay before her eyes. "Ah Sing told me that Ivan planned a party for me. Why is no one here? It's so dark and empty... Why..." Ah Lam pulls over and gets out of her car.
Ah Lam walks up the stairs and opens the door to her house. "Hello?" The house was totally dark. Ah Lam slips on something and falls.
Suddenly, the lights turn on. Maid Ah Ching (Joyce Tang) runs across the living room with a broom.
"Ah Ching! Stop! It's me," Ah Lam calls out.
Luckily, Ah Ching recognizes that it was Ah Lam and doesn't hit her with the broom, "Ah Lam?" Ah Ching helps Ah Lam up from the floor.
"Ah Ching, where is everyone?"
"Mr. Sze..." Ah Ching pauses trying to figure out what to say.
"Ah Ching, don't worry. I know everything now. Ivan planned a party for me, didn't he?"
"Ah Lam, how did you know?"
"Look at the place! Streamers, balloons, they're everywhere! The huge banner saying 'Happy Birthday Michelle' sure does give things away!" Ah Lam laughs.
"The real party is out in the back." Ah Ching leads Ah Lam to the backyard.
Ah Lam gasps and is taken back by the aesthetic view.
"Mr. Sze spent a lot of time planning everything out. He designed the whole thing to fit you."
Ah Lam looks at the ground. Starting from the entrance to the backyard, there was a trail of white roses. Ah Lam follows the roses and counted each one. There were a total of thirty roses that lead to a small banquet table that held the birthday cake. The final rose was attached to the table by a string. Ah Lam grabs it. An envelope slides down. Ah Lam opens the envelope to reveal a card. The card smelled of roses.
It read, "My dear wife, Michelle. A flower without water cannot live, just like a heart without love cannot survive. You're as precious as a rose, but not as delicate. One shake won't make all of your petals fall off. A rose may wither and so will your beauty one day, but unlike a rose, I know I can always admire you because you are never changing. Happy birthday, Michelle."
Tear droplets fall onto the card. Ah Lam sniffs. She looks around her. There was a band waiting to play in the corner. The swimming pool was sprinkled with pink, red, and white rose petals. The banquet table had endless food and the white cake that stood before her was gorgeous. Everything was perfect.
"Ah Lam, are you okay?" Ah Ching hands her a tissue.
"I'm fine. Where is Ivan?"
"Mr. Sze? I don't know. Why don't you call him?"
"I don't think I need to. Ah Ching, I'll be back."
[Car]
Whenever Ah San had a problem, he wouldn't face it alone. Ah Lam knew that he must be with the Kams. She drives off with a smile.
["Tung Mat Yuen" Café]
Ah Sing bites his lip. "Where are you Ah Lam?" He decides to step out of "Tung Mat Yuen" and give her a call.
"Ah Lam?"
"Ah Sing?"
"Finally, you don't call me by my full name," Ah Sing laughs.
"Ivan is over at your place, right?"
"How did you guess?"
"I think I would know my own husband."
"We're all at 'Tung Mat Yuen.'"
"Okay, I'll be there in a few more minutes."
"Bye."
Ah Sing was about to hang up until Ah Lam calls out, "Wait!"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For being a friend."
"I thought you said that we weren't friends."
"Fine, if you don't want to be friends..."
"I'm just kidding!"
"Lau Ka Sing, you're always such a joker!"
"That's what you like about me." Ah Sing realizes that it sounded wrong, so he adds, "As a friend, of course."
"Anyways, thank you for your comfort and helping me get back with Ivan."
"What happened anyways?"
"It's a long story. See you later."
Ah Sing hangs up his phone.
"Who was that?" Fiona asks.
"Ah Lam."
"Michelle?"
Ah Sing nods his head, "Don't tell Ivan though. We'll let her appearance at 'Tung Mat Yuen' be a surprise for him."
"He looks so lifeless! I feel bad for him."
"Don't worry. When Ah Lam shows up, he will be revived." Fiona and Ah Sing walk back into "Tung Mat Yuen."
"It's getting dark," Nim Chi frowns.
"Ah Lam, where can you be?" Ng Sau (Albert Lo) paces back and forth.
"Why don't we try calling her again?" Ah Nin suggests.
"I've tried all day!" Ah San sighs. "She turned off her phone! It's obvious that she doesn't want anyone to contact her!"
"Ah San, don't feel that way," Nim Chi offers some soothing words, "Maybe Ah Lam just wanted some peace."
"I'm a horrible husband! All I care about is work. I kept Michelle waiting for me all the time. I never waited on her. It's always she who waits on me. Her poor little heart yearns to see me every day. Yet, I couldn't even put out the time to have dinner with her every night! I thought this birthday surprise would cheer her up, but it's been a disaster!" Ah San is on the verge of tears.
"It is I who is the horrible wife," Ah Lam pronounces from the door of "Tung Mat Yuen."
"Michelle?" Ah San gasps.
"Ivan," Ah Lam beams and cries happy tears.
The two run towards each other and embrace in a tight and long hug. Ah Sing smiles seeing the two reunited.
"Ivan," Ah Lam says, "I'm sorry I ran away from you today. It was reckless of me. A wife should be there to support her husband, but I ran away and hid from you."
"Michelle, it's not your fault. I suppose you can say it's a taste of my own medicine. This is how you must feel having to wait for me all day and not knowing exactly what I'm doing. Michelle, I'm so sorry. When 'Ka Yan' was having its down a few months ago, you were so worried and sad. I thought that if I could give it a little boost, it would go back up. I didn't know it would become so big and out-of-hand that rumors would start and that it became an unwritten rule of my company to do business with 'Ka Yan' before I would speak with them. Honestly, I only did this a few months ago. I swear I had nothing to do with the recent surge."
"I know you had good intentions and I'm sorry as well. I overreacted. It's just that I take business very seriously. You know that I don't like corruption. However, I do appreciate your thoughtfulness."
Ah Lam and Ah San share a kiss.
"Aiya! Enough with this mushiness! We have a party to get to!" Gam (Louis Yuen) tries to break up Ah Lam and Ah San. They laugh.
"That's true, I did spend quite a bit of money on this party! It would be a pity if it went to waste!" Ah San says. "Birthday girl, you can ride on my back." Ah Lam hops onto Ah San's back. The two walk together on the sidewalk as one.
