Fiona (Sherming Yiu) tossed and turned in her bed. It was the first night that she slept alone in a long time. That night, her sheets felt cold and she felt small. Ah Sing had only been gone for hours, but Fiona missed him dearly. She wished he didn't have to go away. She wished that she didn't have to sleep alone.
Loneliness was something that people who lived in the palace knew best. Because of loneliness, people hurt each other and fight for power. Because of loneliness, even the most untrue and tiniest rumors can be deadly. Fiona shudders remembering her days in the palace. Yet, she couldn't let go. She had convinced herself to accept her fate and become a modern woman and even she was impressed at how quickly she adapted.
"Why do I keep thinking about the palace? It's a nasty place. I should be happy to be away from it."
In the innermost part of Fiona's soul, she knew why. It was because the palace life and being a princess were the two biggest things that defined who she was. Without them, she was just another ordinary girl. Yet, living in the palace was nerve wrecking and it had hurt her dearly.
"So why am I still thinking about it?" she screams inside her head.
["Tung Mat Yuen" Café]
"Good morning," Fiona greets everyone.
"Fiona, what a weird way of wearing makeup!" Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) teases.
"What?" Fiona takes out a small hand mirror from her purse. The rims of her eyes were black.
"That's strange. Big big brother wasn't home last night to 'bother' you from sleeping," Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) thinks.
"I know!" Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) declares.
"What?"
"Fiona must have felt so lonely and desperate without Ah Sing that she spilled beans all over the floor and picked them all up one-by-one all night."
Fiona explains, "I couldn't sleep."
"See! She did pick up beans," Ying Gei is convinced of her assertion.
"No. I just tossed and turned in my bed," Fiona says.
"Again, all because of Ah Sing," Ying Gei smiles proudly.
"Not everyone is as hungry as you for men, sister OK," Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) says. "Maybe Fiona had something to think about."
Seeing that it would be the easy way out, Fiona agrees, "Yes, that's it."
Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) asks, "What were you concerned about?"
"Multiple things."
"Like what?"
"Whether it was going to rain tomorrow, whether the house was clean, whether Ah Sing was feeling well, whether the business discussions were going well, what I would have for breakfast, and so on...." Fiona lies.
"No wonder you couldn't sleep last night!" Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen) shakes her head.
"I hope big big brother returns soon... At this rate, big big sister-in-law's head might explode because she's thinking of too much things!" Ah Yat laughs.
Fiona smiles weakly.
[Kam Family Apartment]
Dinner had long concluded and "Gai Dai Foon Siu" just finished airing. The Kams were about to head into their respective bedrooms because they detested the series that aired after "Gai Dai Foon Siu" because of a particular actress who had unfairly won the "Best Actress" award at the TVB Anniversary the previous year. Nim Chi noticed that Fiona seemed uneasy.
"Fiona, what's wrong?"
"Why is everyone heading into their rooms so early? Usually we all stay up to watch all three TVB series!"
"It's because today is the airing of a new series that stars a certain someone," Nim Chi explains.
Fiona points to the screen, "Her? She's pretty!"
Everyone glares at Fiona, "You better not watch that series!"
Fiona laughs and turns off the television, "Okay then."
Nim Chi turns to Fiona, "Why don't you head downstairs and go to bed too?"
Fiona glances down to the floor, "No one is there."
"You miss Ah Sing, don't you?"
"Ah Sing and Uncle Sau are both away. Uncle Sau has to work on a series that's filming in the mainland. Ah Sing won't be back for a few more days," Fiona sighs. "It's just me in that house. It feels so bare."
"Fiona, do you want to stay here until Ah Sing comes back?" Nim Chi offers.
"How? There are no vacant rooms."
"If you don't mind, you can sleep with this old woman."
Fiona smiles, "Thank you, mother-in-law."
[Nim Chi's Bedroom]
"Good night, mother-in-law, Foon Foon, Hei Hei," Fiona says as she turns off the lights.
As she lay in Nim Chi's bed, Fiona regained the warmth that had left Hong Kong with Ah Sing to Japan. She felt so warm under the sheets that she didn't mind the fact that Nim Chi occupied most of the bed. Fiona was about to fall asleep when she heard loud snoring next to her ear.
"Huh?" Fiona rubs her eyes.
It was Nim Chi. Her snoring was as loud and unappealing as a pig's.
Fiona lightly taps Nim Chi, "Mother-in-law."
Nim Chi wakes with a startle, scaring Fiona.
"Who dares to hit a policewoman?" Nim Chi yells with her eyes still closed.
"Mother-in-law," Fiona repeats.
"Ha! Some nerve you have for trying to upset me by calling me old! I, Yau Nim Chi, am young and attractive!" Nim Chi sticks out her hands in the shape of a gun. "Now, thief, give up and I'll be nice."
"Mother-in-law!" Fiona says in a louder voice.
"Do you think raising your voice will make me scared?"
Fiona sighs and shakes Nim Chi, "Mother-in-law!"
Nim Chi blinks, "Fiona?"
"Mother-in-law."
"What? What is it?"
"You were snoring and then talking in your sleep."
"Did I bother you?"
Fiona tells a white lie, "I'm used to the snoring because of Ah Sing."
"Good, good." Nim Chi falls back onto the bed. "Good night."
Fiona gets up and finds some cotton balls to stick into her ears. "There. Now I won't be bothered anymore." She climbs back onto the bed and turns her body to the side and covers her ears with the pillow. She was about to fall asleep when Nim Chi's arm falls with a loud thump onto Fiona. She grunts and tries to move Nim Chi's arm off. However, it was impossible because her arm seemed to be frozen on Fiona's body.
"Mother-in-law!" Fiona cries out.
This yields no response. Instead, Nim Chi's right leg wraps around Fiona as well.
Fiona felt like she was locked by Nim Chi and was unable to move. It was getting harder for her to breath.
Suddenly, Nim Chi moves her arm and leg off of Fiona. She sighs an air of relief. Just when Fiona thought she could rest, she receives a kick on her bottom from Nim Chi's powerful feet! Fiona tumbles onto the floor. She grunts and grimaces at the pain of falling off of the bed with a loud bump.
"Are you kidding me?" Fiona says as she looks up at Nim Chi. Nim Chi was still fast asleep and snoring as loudly as ever.
"Should I risk my life and get back on the bed?" Fiona debates in her head.
She looks over at the sleeping pair of Foon Foon and Hei Hei. "Maybe I can squeeze into their bed."
She sighs and concludes that the bedroom had no space for her, so she leaves the room.
[Ng Sau's Apartment, Ah Sing & Fiona's Bedroom]
After a futile attempt to escape her cold house, Fiona was back to where she began. "Well, at least now I can have peace and won't wake up with cramps or bruises," Fiona tells herself. She climbs into her bed and tries to fall asleep.
