Seeking Happiness

Chapter 72

tears of anguish

[Kam Family Apartment]

Standing before Fiona's (Sherming Yiu) eyes was the past that she thought she had left behind and would never meet again.

"Fiona, who is that at the..." Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) turns around to ask. She is too shocked at their visitors that she grows speechless.

Fiona tried to move her mouth and body, but they were both frozen solid. The rest of the Kams had their eyes glued onto "Gai Dai Foon Siu."

"Ridiculous! How can you people see the Empress and not bow?" one of the men shouts.

"A-a-auntie," Fiona stutters as she falls to her knees. "Everyone!" Fiona calls.

The attention of the other Kams is finally caught as they look behind.

With her head bowed down, Fiona quickly says, "It's the Empress...!"

Everyone gasps and falls onto their knees. They try to remember the ancient imperial palace etiquette that they learned from watching "War and Beauty." They finally blurt out, "May Your Highness have longevity."

"Enough! Enough with the formality," the Empress (Rebecca Chan) says as she makes her way to the Kams' massaging chair. Her guards and servant follow her.

Everyone gets up and looks at Fiona, unsure of what to do.

Fiona's knees start to shake. She tries her best to keep herself up as she walks over to the Empress. "Your Highness, what brings you here?"

"Problems, my dear niece, problems."

"What problems can you have? You and His Majesty have the throne and endless power and fortune," Fiona bitterly says.

"Ay, Fiona, that is not the case. Your uncle and I have found it so difficult to run the Island since you've been gone."

Fiona laughs, "Really?"

"My dear niece, stop being so distant and call me 'auntie'."

"I dare not. I am now just a lowly nobody, Your Highness," Fiona sneers.

"On Gong Gong, guards! Bow down to the Princess," the Empress instructs.

In that very instant, all four men bowed and greeted Fiona.

Fiona ignores them and lets them keep bowing at her feet. After awhile, she tells them, "At ease."

"Oh my god! An actual eunuch?" Gam (Louis Yuen) exclaims.

On Gong Gong (Bowie Lam) biting replies, "No! I am more manly than you."

"Doesn't make sense! Then why are you called a 'gong gong'?" Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) asks.

"Our ancestors came from the Ming dynasty. They were exiled because of corruption of power among the eunuchs. That is why when they set up our imperial system, they made sure that male servants were not castrated. Eunuchs are so nasty and evil because they can do nothing besides seek power and money. We kept 'gong gong' for referring to male servants in the palace because of tradition," On Gong Gong explains.

Fiona shakes her head, "Your Highness, you need not trouble your men to flatter me. I have nothing to offer."

"My sweet niece, I don't understand why you're so hateful towards me. I did so much just to meet you again. Can we find somewhere secretive to talk?"

"These are my family members." Fiona waves her hand across the room behind her. "You can say whatever you want to me here."

"No, Fiona, I can't."

"Is Your Highness afraid of revealing to people your true intentions?"

"No. It concerns imperial matters back at home," the Empress confesses.

Fiona scoffs, "The palace has nothing to do with me any longer. I was exiled and stripped of my title as 'Princess,' don't you remember?"

"Fiona, please. Just listen to me."

"Did you listen to me when I begged you? Your Highness, I crawled in front of your feet. What did you do? You continued to backstab me and made accusations against me even bigger. You disgust me! I grew up looking at you as my auntie, but I've realized that you never regarded me as your niece." Fiona starts to cry. "Now you come here and put up a fake act? No, the feelings between you and I have long been gone. Since the moment you lied in front of my father just so that you and your husband could get the throne."

"Fiona, it's not like that! I was forced to do what I did by your uncle. I was totally innocent," the Empress pleads.

"That's what you say now... after you have the throne. I won't believe another word. Leave!" Fiona points to the door.

To Fiona's surprise, the Empress gets up and starts bowing down in front of Fiona. She bumps her head on the floor and pleads. The Kams are silent. They want to say something, but they're afraid to speak up.

"Your Highness! Get up," On Gong Gong urges.

"No!" the Empress pushes him away. "I want to show my niece that I am sincere." She continues to bow and plead.

"Get up!" Fiona yells.

"I won't until you agree to listen to me."

"What are you trying to do? Are you evil enough to want to curse me for letting my aunt bow down at my feet? Then again, according to you, I'm not even your niece. Get up!" Fiona orders.

The Empress lifts up her head to reveal a red forehead along with eyes swollen from tears, "Fiona, please."

Fiona sighs, "Fine. I don't want to die younger because of you. You've hurt me far enough."

The Empress smiles and gets up, "Thank you."

"Follow me downstairs," Fiona says.

The ending credits for "Gai Dai Foon Siu" start to roll after the Kams' door was closed by one of the guards. The Kams finally relaxed from their tense states. They had hardly moved a muscle since Fiona's visitors had entered the room.

"I'm so pissed!" Gam (Louis Yuen) complains.

"Poor Fiona," Nim Chi sighs.

"We missed half-an-episode of 'Gai Dai Foon Siu' because of them!" Gam moans.

"I wonder what's happening downstairs," Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) ponders.

"Oh no! What if Fiona is murdered?" Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) gasps.

"Huh?!"

"You saw the hate between the two! Plus, the Empress had a three guards and a nasty eunuch! Fiona is both outnumbered and weak! I bet the Empress wanted them to talk in a secret room so that there would be no one around to witness Fiona's murder!" Ying Gei frantically says.

"Einstein! Stop thinking of nonsense," Gam scolds.

"Ying Gei has a point..." Nim Chi thinks.

"Huh?!"

"People from the palace are twisted. Who knows what they're thinking?" Nim Chi explains.

"This means that big big sister-in-law might be in real danger then!" Ah Yat says.

"Aiya! You people are thinking too much. The Empress is Fiona's real aunt. How can she harm her own niece?" Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) questions.

"Second sister-in-law, even though you're your mother's daughter, she takes every opportunity that she can to use you for her own benefits! In fact, I have doubts whether or not she would turn you in if she got a large sum of money for it. Let's not even talk about someone's aunt," Ah Yat retorts.

"Let's go down there and see!" Nim Chi says.

[Ng Sau's Apartment]

The Kams all crowded outside of Ng Sau's apartment's door to listen in on the conversation that was going on between Fiona and the Empress.

"I'm glad you decided to listen to me," the Empress smiles.

"Cut the crap. What do you want?" Fiona bitingly remarks.

"How dare you talk to Her Majesty like that?" On Gong Gong wants to slap Fiona.

"I'm the princess! How dare a servant of a dog like you speak to me? Look away!" Fiona yells.

On Gong Gong looks with pleading eyes at the Empress, who confirms Fiona's wish. On Gong Gong reluctantly turns to look at the wall.

"Now, my dear niece, I can talk to you."

Fiona rolls her eyes, "Hurry up."

"The Island is in a state of chaos right now. His Majesty and I are having a difficult time and we're not in much favor by the people."

"So?"

"This means that the dynasty that our ancestors, meaning your family, built is becoming unstable. If you don't help us, the throne might be handed down to someone outside of our family. You don't want that to happen, now, do you Fiona?"

Fiona shrugs, "I don't care. I never had any intentions on taking the crown, even though I was in line to receive the throne from my father. It's you guys who were jealous and greedy that you plotted against me and kicked me out! Not only that, you made my father believe that I wasn't his daughter!" Tears flow down Fiona's face, "He died thinking that I wasn't his daughter and I didn't even get to say one last word to him! How can you be so cruel? I honestly don't care about the throne. But to hurt my relationship with my father like that just so you could take the throne..." Fiona's voice cracks.

The Empress tries to wipe off Fiona's tears, but in vain. She slaps her hand away.

"Fiona, please," the Empress begs.

"I listened to what you had to say, now go." Fiona points to the door.

"My dear niece, really, I'm not lying! If you don't come back with me to the Island, our family will lose the throne!"

Fiona screams, "I don't care!"

Fiona pushes the Empress towards the door. The Kams panic upon hearing the approaching footsteps and scurry into the stairway hall.

"Fiona! Listen to me!" the Empress begs.

"I won't!" Fiona screams and slams the door in her face.

Fiona slids down the door with her back pressed against it and falls to the floor. She breaks down into more tears, full of anguish.
