Chapter 76

spawn of rumors

[Palace of Eternal Purity]

Fiona's (Sherming Yiu) maids laid out a parade of outfits and accessories in front of Fiona's eyes as she sat on her make-up table. There were more than fifty outfits to choose from. After Fiona was dressed, the maids did her hair and applied her make-up. The whole procedure took a near two hours to complete. After it was all done, Fiona was pretty and dressed up for the whole world to admire. She smiled at her reflection in the mirror.

The scriptures had made it clear that the royal family must never be an embarrassment.

Fiona had an appointment with her father that day for breakfast, but she was stopped on her way out by Ah Sing (Hawick Lau).

"Ah Sing, what's the matter?"

Ah Sing holds up a box, "It's the latest webcam! It's so cool!"

"Oh... well I have to go to see my father now."

"No, we must use it and talk to Ma Chi and the others!"

"I have an appointment, Ah Sing. I'm late."

"Fiona, Ma Chi and the others would like to talk to you too."

Fiona was about to leave again when Mo Yung (Ha Yu) appears.

"Uncle-in-law, what is it?"

Mo Yung smiles, "I wanted to see you two enjoy the present I got."

"You mean the webcam?" Fiona points to the box that Ah Sing was opening up.

He nods, "Yes. I just had to buy it... so that you would feel more connected with your family in Hong Kong."

"But!" Fiona protests.

Mo Yung gives an order to Bo Gong Gong (Liu Kai Chi), "Tell His Majesty that Fiona is busy catching up with her family and can't join him until later." He closes the door and urges Fiona and Ah Sing over to their computer.

[Emperor's Palace]

Suet Ching (Rebecca Chan) greets the Island Chief (Law Kong), "Brother, good morning."

"Sister, it is you? I was expecting Fiona."

"Really? It's not like her to miss an appointment. She is very responsible." Suet Ching makes her way to a seat on the dining table.

Bo Gong Gong arrives and announces, "Your Majesty, Princess Fiona cannot make it today."

"Why? Is something wrong?"

"The Princess is busy catching up with her family."

"Oh, all right. You are dismissed."

"Brother, don't you find it strange?"

"Strange?"

"Fiona's family is right here... you, me, Foo Ma, my husband... what 'family' could she be catching up with?"

"Most likely Foo Ma's family in Hong Kong."

Suet Ching nods, "You're probably right... but I find it puzzling why she would overweigh them compared to you. Forgive me for saying this, but you're sick and your days are numbered. Why would Fiona be so irrational and not spend the days with you?"

"Well," Island Chief replies, "I can't be selfish. Besides, I'm sure Fiona will visit me later."

"Or will she?"

"Sister, what are you trying to say?"

"Brother, I'm not sure if I should tell you this..." her voice trails off.

"What?"

"Lately, people have been talking about Lady Yin again."

"Lady Yin? She's been dead for years."

"Yes, but the rumors surrounding her haven't died down."

"Sister, be direct with me."

Suet Ching gets on her knees, "I'm sorry, brother, it's not my position to discuss such matters with you."

"If you mentioned it, it must be serious. Let me know what it is."

Suet Ching looks around at the maids and "eunuchs" in the room. The Island Chief takes the hint and tells them to leave the room. Suet Ching begins to speak, "Please don't be upset by what I have to say. The people are saying that Lady Yin's death is suspicious."

"Suspicious? Ridiculous! The poor woman was sick and weak!"

"Before she died, a rumor emerged that she was trying to kill Lady Tsang's baby."

"Ridiculous!"

"People also said that Lady Yin was behind the fact that..."

"What? What is it?" Island Chief demands.

"They say that she teamed up with an Imperial Doctor to kill every pregnancy that..."

"Rubbish!" Island Chief shouts.

"Brother, I am only stating what the rumors say. They said that Lady Yin didn't die from her failing health. They said that she asked the Imperial Doctor to prescribe her an easy killer so that she could escape punishment for her evil deeds. They said..."

"Sister, what is the point of bring up these rumors?"

"Brother, these rumors are a disgrace to the royal family and our Imperial name."

"Do you want me to order death to everyone who gossips?"

"Well..." Suet Ching starts to say.

"We may be the royal family, but our powers are not limitless. We can't shut everyone up and it would be cruel to kill people for gossiping. Our dynasty lasted so long because we are kind rulers and rule with justice."

"Yes, brother, I know."

"Is that all you had to say to me, sister?"

"Actually..." Suet Ching hands the Island Chief a stack of pictures. "This is the man who is supposedly the Imperial Doctor in the rumors. These pictures were taken yesterday. He was seen offering goods and praying to Lady Yin..."

The Island Chief goes through the set of pictures, "Who is this man?"

"It is the head Imperial Doctor... Doctor Tsui."

"Oh! Doctor Tsui, I know him."

Suet Ching nods, "Yes. What surprises me is why he was visiting Lady Yin's grave... and this is not the first time either."

"Oh?"

"I've heard on multiple occasions that he visited her grave and if I recall correctly, he was not present at her funeral..."

"Sister, what are you saying?"

"There are rumors that the two of them did something disrespectful to you."

"She was his sick patient and he her doctor. What could they have done?"

"Their outer relationship may be doctor and patient, but they are still a pair of male and female."

"Sister, you may be my sister, but how dare you say such nonsense in front of me?"

Suet Ching gets down on her knees, "Brother, I apologize. It's just that I feel something is not right. I'm not one of your jealous concubines, so I have no reason to frame Lady Yin... especially after she's been dead for many years. You have no reason to doubt my intention other than the fact that I want to seek justice. It's just that I believe that there might be some truth to the rumors. Every rumor spawns from some truth, even if just a little."

"Fine. Continue." Island Chief chews on a Chinese doughnut.

"Pardon my words and tongue, then," Suet Ching warns. "People say that Lady Yin and Doctor Tsui had a secret affair that was kept hidden with Lady Yin's death. Doctor Tsui was constantly seen in Lady Yin's palace. Who knows what they might have done in there besides treating her illness? They also say that Doctor Tsui helped Lady Yin to climb up to power by helping her to defeat her rivals by clever medicinal poisons and tactics. There is also an outrageous rumor that Fiona is a product of their affair..." Suet Ching grows silent and looks at the Island Chief for a reaction.
