Chapter 77

palatial mishap

[Emperor's Palace]

The Island Chief (Law Kong) is motionless and his face reveals no response to what Suet Ching (Rebecca Chan) said regarding a discrepancy in Fiona's parentage. Suet Ching decides to take it to the next level and holds up a CD. "The other day, Fiona and Doctor Tsui had a secret meeting. I've asked my servants to keep an eye on Doctor Tsui because I feel his character is shady. Luckily, yesterday, I received word from On Gong Gong that the hidden voice recorder in Doctor Tsui's office recorded some very interesting things..."

Suet Ching inserts the CD into a CD player and sits back down. She continues to observe her brother throughout the CD's play.

The voices of Fiona (Sherming Yiu) and Doctor Tsui (Gallen Lo) were evident.

"Princess, you've come?" Doctor Tsui says.

"You shouldn't be so formal to me. I'm afraid my longevity will be affected," Fiona tells him.

"What are you talking about?" In a lower voice, he whispers, "There might be people around."

"I can't bear this pain. Can't I just call you 'father' for once?"

"Hush! If anyone hears that, you and I will both die."

"After I found out the truth... about mother and you, I..." Fiona's voice apparently cracks and there are signs that she's crying.

"Princess, don't cry!"

"It hurts too much."

"The pain will be over soon. You will take over the crown. After that, our troubles will be over."

"It's so unfair to mother and you."

"Lady Yin and I shared good memories."

"Father, don't you worry. After I take over the throne, you and I will rule the Island together."

Suet Ching stops the CD and glances at the Island Chief. Again, he is expressionless. She grows frustrated and takes out another set of pictures. It is of Doctor Tsui and Fiona hugging. "See how the two of them embrace each other so! It's clear that they have some strong bond or relationship..."

"Sister," Island Chief finally speaks.

"Brother?"

Island Chief starts to shake, "Are these pictures and that CD just now... are they all true?"

Suet Ching falls to her knees, "I swear to God!"

"Send for Doctor Tsui! I must get to the bottom of this matter," Island Chief shouts.

Suet Ching smirks and gives On Gong Gong (Bowie Lam) the order.

[Imperial Clinic]

Doctor Tsui was sitting in his office updating the medical records. He drifts off thinking about Lady Yin.

[Flashback]

Doctor Tsui was born in a well-to-do family, but because of a natural disaster, they lost everything. His father was too devastated that his fortune was all gone that he grew ill and died. His mother was so depressed after his father died that she, too, became weak and passed away. With the death of both parents and no money to survive on, Doctor Tsui and his younger sister had to resort to begging on the streets. They were laughed at because their family had once been so great.

Doctor Tsui resented this and tried to get a job, but no one would hire him and urged that they didn't dare to hire the eldest son of the Tsui family. He refused to give up and went looking for work everyday. He told his younger sister, Yin Jee, to wait for him on the outside while he talked with the storeowners. That day, Doctor Tsui talked with a pharmacist who was looking for an assistant. This pharmacist was impressed by Doctor Tsui's intelligence. He hired him and even offered him and his sister a place to stay. Doctor Tsui was thrilled and thanked the man repeatedly.

He ran out to tell Yin Jee the good news, but she wasn't there. He ran around town looking for her, but he didn't see her. Since that day, Doctor Tsui lost contact with his sister. He continued to learn all about medicine and eventually, the pharmacist sent him to medical school where he graduated as the top student. Before long, Doctor Tsui's name became known and he entered a competition to become an Imperial Doctor. He won and entered the palace.

Despite Doctor Tsui's continued success, he always felt guilty for not being able to find his sister. One day, he was told to tend to the health of Lady Yin, who was the Island Chief's most favorite concubine and had borne him a lovely princess. Doctor Tsui did as he was told and travels to the "Palace of Heavenly Reunion." In the past, he would always get excited at the word "yin" because he would hope that the word would somehow relate to his long-lost sister.

[Palace of Heavenly Reunion]

Lady Yin (Gigi Lai) was a fair lady. She was elegant and beautiful with a soft voice. Because of her poor health, her every movement was delicate. It was as if the lightest poke would make her fall over. Doctor Tsui was nervous when he first met Lady Yin.

"L-lady Y-i-i-n," he stutters.

She gives him a smile and says, "Stand up."

It was from this first word and smile that Doctor Tsui realized that Lady Yin was not like the other concubines in the palace. The other ones that he had tended to were conceited and treated him not as a doctor, but as a dog that they could order around. Because of Lady Yin's condition, Doctor Tsui had to keep a close eye on her. To make sure that the treatment went well, he visited her nearly every day.

During these daily visits, Lady Yin started conversations with Doctor Tsui. They got to know each other and he also met with her daughter, Princess Fiona. Fiona was an energetic ten-year-old who was fascinated by the world. Fiona liked speaking with Doctor Tsui because he told her stories about life outside of the palace. These stories intrigued her and she told Lady Yin that one day she would travel the world. Doctor Tsui smiled at the cute little girl.

Doctor Tsui started to suspect that Lady Yin might be his sister when she told him about her past. She told him that she was the youngest of a prominent family, but because of a horrible hurricane, they lost everything. Her parents died early and she became an orphan, with only her older brother to look after her. She said that while she was waiting for him to get a job in a pharmacy, a rich-looking lady walked up to her and asked her if she wanted to earn money. Thinking of her brother, she agreed and went off with the lady. To her dismay, it was the last time that she would see her brother. The lady took her to the capital city and dressed her in rich silks and fed her the best food. This lady taught Lady Yin how to become a proper lady. When she was sixteen, she was brought into the palace to become a concubine. Lady Yin expresses that it wasn't easy for her to get to where she was.

When Doctor Tsui asks Lady Yin if she ever found her big brother, she answers that she hadn't. She tried to find him, but he was apparently missing.

Mustering up his courage, Doctor Tsui finally asks one day, "Lady Yin, may I ask what your surname is?"

"It's Tsui, as in the legendary female Korean doctor, Tsui Cheung Kam."

Doctor Tsui stares at Lady Yin, "Does your brother happen to be named Tsui Tin Choi?"

Lady Yin is surprised, "Yes, he was. How did you know?"

His eyes glance back and forth at Lady Yin, "And you... y-y-you're Tsui Yin Jee, aren't you?"

Lady Yin nods her head uneasily.

Doctor Tsui's eyes redden and without thinking, he hugs Lady Yin. "Yin Jee! Yin Jee!" he sobs.

"D-D-Doctor Tsui, what are you doing?"

"Yin Jee, it's me, big brother!"

Lady Yin observes Doctor Tsui's face, "Is it really?"

"Yin Jee, I've looked for you all of these years! I can't believe I finally meet you again."

"Big brother... can it really be?"

Doctor Tsui nods his head, "Yin Jee!"

"Big brother!" Lady Yin sobs.

After that day, Lady Yin and Doctor Tsui became even closer. Lady Yin wanted to tell the Island Chief about their relationship and how she finally found her big brother, but Doctor Tsui quickly objects.

"If you tell him, it will be the end of your concubine days," he argues.

"Why?"

"Imperial concubines are only supposed to come from the Island's nobles."

"Our family was once grand."

"It was," Doctor Tsui emphasizes, "But no longer. If the royal court finds out about your real past, they will say that you're not fit to be a royal concubine and find ways to bring you down. You won't see Fiona anymore and will be kicked out of the palace."

"Is it really so serious?"

Doctor Tsui nods his head, "One wrong move in the palace will lead to the end."

"But big brother, I want His Majesty to honor you and then you'll become 'Kwok Kau' (Royal concubine's elder brother)."

"Yin Jee, I thank you for your thoughtfulness, but I'm already the head Imperial Doctor. I'm satisfied enough!"

Lady Yin smiles, "Okay then. I just wish..."

Doctor Tsui looks her in the eyes and warns, "No one must know of our true relationship. I don't want you to be stripped of this royal concubine rank that you've worked so hard to obtain. I'll address you as 'Lady Yin' and you'll continue to call me 'Doctor Tsui.' It doesn't matter if we don't say it aloud. I know you want to call me 'big brother' and I'll secretly call you 'Yin Jee.' It's great enough that we found each other. All that matters is that you and I live happily and soundly." Doctor Tsui gives her a big smile.

Lady Yin looks at Fiona, who's playing with a doll on her bed. "Fiona can't know her own uncle?"

"Fiona has a great relationship with me. It doesn't matter if she doesn't know that I'm her uncle. I'll continue to look after her."

"Living in the palace is so tough. There's so much that we can't do."

Doctor Tsui nods, "It is, but we have each other to live out the hardships."

Lady Yin sighs, "All right. But just once..."

Doctor Tsui's ears perk up, "What is it?"

"Let me call you just once."

"All right."

Lady Yin grins like a young child and calls out, "Big brother!"

[End of Flashback]

Doctor Tsui's heart can't help but be sweeten by his memories with Lady Yin.

"Doctor Tsui!" a fierce voice yells.

He blinks and is taken back into reality. On Gong Gong is standing in front of him.

"Doctor Tsui!"

"Yes? What is it?"

"Island Chief wishes to see you."

"Is something wrong with him?" Doctor Tsui is frantic and rushes to On Gong Gong, wishing to know the details of the matter.

"You'll know when you get there. Follow me." On Gong Gong has a sinister sneer on his face.
