Chapter 79

royal decree

[Emperor's Palace]

Island Chief (Law Kong) wakes up from his unconsciousness. He finds himself in his bed with his sister (Rebecca Chan), who must have fallen asleep while looking after him, sitting on the other end. He doesn't want to disturb her, so he decides to move without waking her. When he steps his left foot down on the floor and tries to stand him, he finds this difficult and loses balance. He crashes onto the floor. Suet Ching wakes with a startle and the Island Chief's "eunuchs" run to his aid.

"Brother!" Suet Ching cries. They help him back onto the bed.

Island Chief laughs bitterly, "I can't believe I can't even stand up."

"Brother, you'll get better."

"Better? Don't make me laugh, sister. I just locked up the best Imperial Doctor in the palace. Who will cure me now?"

"Doctor Yeung and the others."

"They're not as good as Doctor Tsui."

"Do you want to keep him around and let him take over the Island?"

Island Chief is silent, "Is it really true...?"

Suet Ching nods her head, "Yes. It's all true. Doctor Tsui had an affair with Lady Yin, which sprouted because she was his patient. It's because of this affair that Fiona was born. Lady Yin deceived you so that she could win back power and become your favorite concubine."

The face of the Island Chief is solemn.

"Brother, what's wrong?"

"Just like that, the two people that I trusted and valued the most..."

"It's good that you were able to see their real faces and intentions before it was too late."

To Suet Ching's surprise, Island Chief starts to cry. "Sister, I can't accept this reality. My beloved daughter turns out not to be mine and a doctor whom I entrusted my well-being with has ulterior motives for the crown and slept with my dear concubine. How could they...?"

Suet Ching assures Island Chief, "Brother, don't be sad. There'll be other doctors just as great if not better."

Island Chief glares at Suet Ching, "And I will have another daughter like Fiona?"

Suet Ching is taken back and doesn't say anything.

Island Chief sighs, "Just when I thought I could pass over the throne to my daughter and rest, I find out that she's not my daughter. What am I going to do now? Who am I going to pass the throne to?"

Suet Ching clears her throat and coughs.

"Servants! Bring Gwun Ju some tea! Her throat is dry," Island Chief orders.

Suet Ching decides to be candid and says, "You could pass the throne to me."

"You?"

Suet Ching nods her head, "Brother, I've stand behind you all these years. Never once have I been untrue. All of my actions in the palace have been done with you as my utmost thought and priority."

Island Chief rests his head on the pillow and closes his eyes, "You're right."

[Palace of Gathering Essence]

"Finally, our hard work is rewarded!" Mo Yung laughs happily.

Suet Ching drinks hot tea from her cup and offers a weak nod.

"Wifey, you're going to be announced as the new Island Chief soon!"

"Very soon... in fact, tomorrow. His Majesty wants to pass the throne before he is too weak to do or know anything."

"Are you serious?"

"Yes."

"This is great, wifey!" Mo Yung can't suppress the delight that he felt. "Modern technology makes it so easy to frame people!"

"And they say that modern technology is making it easier to get justice for people," Suet Ching smirks.

"Ah, but it does... too bad the Island hasn't adapted modern thinking and is thus easily deceived," Mo Yung answers.

"Did you throw those things away?"

"Yes," Mo Yung answers, "I took apart and discarded my computer. There's no way anyone will ever find out. With some photographs, Photoshop, and a voice manipulator, ah... it was far too easy. Combined with Island Chief's fazed judgment as well. We must thank the Heavens that he has brain cancer otherwise it wouldn't have been so easy to fool him."

Suet Ching yawns.

"It's a good thing you were able to record their voices so that the program could successfully imitate their voices. With the right sound waves and frequency, the program made us sound almost exactly like the real people. Isn't modern technology great?" Mo Yung chuckles.

Suet Ching doesn't seem too excited.

"Has he said anything about Fiona or Doctor Tsui?"

"No."

"Oh well, it doesn't matter. Power will come to our hands soon. Then we'll execute them!"

"Y-you mean kill them?" Suet Ching stutters.

"That was already decided before the plan was made. We mustn't leave roots otherwise they will bear new trees."

"Fiona is our niece!"

"So? She is in our way of the throne. Now, let's go to bed! The crown is waiting for you tomorrow."

Suet Ching has an uneasy look on her face.

[Imperial Dungeon]

Fiona (Sherming Yiu), Ah Sing (Hawick Lau), and Doctor Tsui (Gallen Lo) were locked in separate cells. The jail was so dark and cold that the only light was from the outside moon through the cell's small barred window. Fiona still couldn't believe what happened that day. "What is going on?" No matter how many times Fiona tried to piece the puzzle, it just didn't come together. She couldn't formulate a comprehensive picture of what happened.

"Why did father smack me and accuse me of not being his daughter? Why did he lock me up? Why..."

"Princess!" A familiar voice calls from the door to Fiona's cell. It's Bo Gong Gong (Liu Kai Chi).

"Bo Gong Gong! I'm so happy to see someone I know!" Fiona jumps up.

The fierce guard behind Bo Gong Gong opens up the door and lets him in. Bo Gong Gong hands him some money and the guard tells him that he only has ten minutes to visit. Bo Gong Gong thanks the man and looks at Fiona with sad eyes.

"Bo Gong Gong..."

"Princess! I can't believe they did this to you. How can you be forced to live in such a place like this?"

"Bo Gong Gong, do you know what happened?"

"I'm not exactly sure. However..."

"What? What is it?" Fiona interrupts.

"I heard On Gong Gong boasting that we would have to suck up to him if we want to remain at peace in the palace."

"On Gong Gong?"

Bo Gong Gong nods his head, "He said something about how the rulers of the palace was going to change."

"What else did he say?"

"Not much besides that he would make life difficult for those who don't treat him well or have done him wrong in the past."

"Bo Gong Gong, does that include you?"

"I don't think so. I've been neutral to everyone, so I have nothing to worry about."

"Did you hear anything else?"

"Well, I'm not too clear on this..."

"Bo Gong Gong, just tell me anything! I'm so confused right now."

"I heard that His Majesty was presented with a stack of pictures and a CD recording by Gwun Ju. It was said that he was so angry after viewing these that he called Doctor Tsui to his room and accused him of having an affair with Lady Yin and being your father..."

"What?"

"Forgive me for saying this, Your Highness."

"What? Speak!"

"I have a feeling that it was a trap set up by Gwun Ju and Gwun Ma (Emperor's sister's husband)."

"It all makes sense now," Fiona quietly says. She giggles like a crazy woman, "It was all a trap... a whole bunch of deception. That was why auntie told me to confess the truth and that was why uncle-in-law lied to my father..." Fiona's voice cracks, "That was why they refused to listen to my begs... and... and that was why father slapped me and broke my crown!" Fiona bawls.

"Your Highness, I'm sure things will be okay."

"Okay? Bo Gong Gong! I'm locked in the Imperial Dungeon! Do you know what this means? It's hopeless."

"His Majesty loves you so much. I'm sure he will see the truth of the matter."

"He no longer cares about me and is firm in believing that I'm not his daughter... Bo Gong Gong..."

The guard comes and tells Bo Gong Gong that his time was up. Bo Gong Gong leaves Fiona with the final words, "Princess, don't you worry. I'll try to talk to His Majesty and you'll be out in no time! Remember, the truth will remain in the hearts of people and light will be shed someday!"

(Doctor Tsui's Cell)

A black rat runs across Doctor Tsui's feet as he scrunched up in a corner. The events of the day replayed in his head. "It's all a conspiracy!" he screams at the top of his lungs. "It's all a trap..." he says again, but this time softly. Finally, he adds, "And I was stupid enough to be caught in the trap."

He catches the rat that ran across him earlier. It is skinny and squeaks briskly. "I'm like this rat, so stupid. I fell into a trap without even know it was a trap." The rat bites his finger, so Doctor Tsui lets go of his grasp. The rat scurries away. Doctor Tsui's finger bleeds. He laughs, "Either way, I'm dying."

Doctor Tsui looks out into the window at the moon. He swears he sees a reflection of Lady Yin (Gigi Lai) in the moon and he hears her voice. She beckons, "Tell them the truth. Tell them the truth."

"Yin Jee?" Doctor Tsui calls.

"Tell them the truth."

"I can't."

"Tell them the truth."

"Yin Jee, don't ask me to do this! I won't. You died honorably as the Island Chief's concubine. I won't them strip you of your title. No, you died with this title and will be remembered for generations to come as a royal concubine."

This phrase is repeated multiple times inside of Doctor Tsui's head. He holds his head and covers his ears, hoping to block out the voice, but it keeps repeating the same message. He shrieks.

[Palatial Meeting Quarter]

On Gong Gong (Bowie Lam) is given the honor of announcing the Island Chief's decree in front of the Imperial Court. He unravels the golden scroll and reads loudly and clearly so that everyone in the room could hear, "On this fifteenth day of August, the Island Chief has given the decree, his wishes reveal that he wants to pass on the throne. The subject that will take over the throne and become the new Island Chief is Ng Suet Ching Gwun Ju." On Gong Gong beams proudly. Music is played and Suet Ching makes her way to the center of the stage. A crown is placed on her head and she sits in the imperial dragon chair. She greets her audience with a dignified poise.
