Chapter 82

eccentric letter

[Ng Sau's Apartment]

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) called Fiona (Sherming Yiu) that morning. "Good morning!"

Fiona is relieved to hear his voice again, "Ah Sing! When are you coming back?"

"Probably never. It feels good to be free!" Ah Sing laughs.

Fiona's voice trembles, "Ah Sing, this is not a time to joke. When are you coming back?"

Ah Sing's tone changes and he is concerned, "Fiona, is something wrong?"

"Ah Sing, please."

"Well, we got the contract this morning, so that's why I called to tell you the good news. We're also lucky enough that this company was so pleased that they introduced us to their partners. Ah Lam and I are going to stay for another week."

Fiona's heart nearly stops, "So you're not coming back soon?"

"Fiona, what's wrong?"

Fiona doesn't know if she should tell him about Suet Ching (Rebecca Chan) and how she came to Hong Kong asking her to come back to the Island. Fiona wants to tell Ah Sing so that he could rush back and offer her some security, but at the same time, she doesn't want him to lose business for "Ka Yan."

"Hello? Fiona?" Ah Sing calls.

"Yes, I'm here."

"What's wrong?"

Fiona stutters, "N-no-nothing."

"Just tell me."

"It's just that I felt lonely lately..."

Ah Sing says, "Fiona, you naughty princess!"

"Please hurry back as soon as possible."

"I will." Ah Sing blows a kiss into the phone.

"Love you." Fiona hangs up. She regrets not telling Ah Sing the real root of her worries, but she doesn't want to worry him and make him lose business. "I will handle this myself. It's okay. Nothing is going to happen," she tells herself. Fiona finally calms herself until the doorbell rings and makes her nervous again. She tiptoes to the door and peeks to see who it was. She nearly falls seeing Nim Chi (Nancy Sit), Suet Ching (Rebecca Chan), On Gong Gong (Bowie Lam), and the others.

"Fiona? Are you home?" Nim Chi's muffled voice calls.

Realizing that they wouldn't go away unless she gave them an answer, Fiona yells back, "I'm not feeling well. Please leave me alone."

"Fiona, open up. I have to talk to you," Nim Chi insists.

"Mother-in-law, please leave me alone."

"F-" Nim Chi starts to say until Suet Ching stops her.

"If she doesn't want to be bothered, let's not," Fiona hears Suet Ching say.

[Elevator]

Nim Chi apologizes, "I'm sorry I couldn't help."

"My niece is very stubborn. I understand," Suet Ching says. "Thank you anyway."

The elevator stops on the ground floor. Nim Chi tells Suet Ching that she would be at "Tung Mat Yuen" if she needed anything. Suet Ching waves. She glances up and whispers something to On Gong Gong.

[Ng Sau's Apartment]

"Why did mother-in-law side with auntie just now? Why did they seem so friendly?" Fiona is shaken. "I feel like I'm falling into a trap again. Something is going on and I have no idea what it is." She gives a glance at the door. "Should I go away so they can't find me? Or should I keep hiding in here?" She contemplated the options. If she left the apartment, she might be at greater risk of getting abducted outside. If she kept hiding, she wouldn't know what was going on outside and might become an easier prey. "Damn it! What am I to do?"

Perhaps Fiona never had any options in the first place. The loud fire alarm rang from the hallways. She panics and hastens to open the door so she could flee from the building. The door was giving her trouble and she had a hard time opening it. Fiona was afraid that she might die in the flames. She finally manages to open the door and leaps out. On Gong Gong grabs her before she reaches the stairs. He drags her back into her apartment.

"Bitch! Finally, you came out." On Gong Gong ties Fiona's hands behind her back with a rope, ties a handkerchief around her mouth, and pushes her onto the sofa.

The fire alarm stops ringing and Suet Ching enters the apartment with a smile. "My dear, dear, stubborn niece," she tsks. "You could have had it much easier, but you made me choose the hard way. If only you listened to me the first time, we wouldn't have had to go to this measure."

On Gong Gong pulls down the handkerchief from Fiona's face, shoves a pill into her mouth, and forces it down her throat. She gags.

Fiona's eyes are full of passionate hate. Her curses and screams are but a muffled noise behind the handkerchief.

"I wouldn't move too much if I were you. It will speed the poison..." Suet Ching pinches Fiona's right cheek. "My poor niece. Don't you worry though. Since I am your aunt, I won't let you die. If you cooperate with me, you're going to be just fine. Just come back to the Island with me and I will have Doctor Yeung give you the antidote. Now, I'm going to give you some paper and a pen and you're going to write a simple letter, all right?"

Fiona nods her head.

"Good, good. On Gong Gong, release her right hand while you have one of the guards restrain her left hand and keep her feet glued to the ground. Now, on the count of three, they're going to free your hand so you can write, is that clear? Don't try anything funny... or..." Suet Ching pulls out a knife and sticks the edge of it behind Fiona's back. One false move and I will jab it into you." She flashes a smile, "But don't worry... if you're nice, I will be nice and put the knife away."

Fiona is so scared that she thinks she might have a heart attack.

"One... two... three!" On Gong Gong loosens the rope. One of the guards holds on to Fiona's left hand while On Gong Gong pounces onto Fiona's feet. "Good, very, very good." Suet Ching says. She places a pen into Fiona's hand. "Start writing. Tell your family that you will be away on a... vacation and that they don't have to worry about you and that you'll be back soon."

As Fiona held the pen in her hand, it starts to shake. She had nowhere to go and could do nothing but appease Suet Ching's wishes. She could feel the tip of the dagger behind her back. Her arm ached from being twisted behind her. On Gong Gong's body crushed her feet. Realizing that the letter would be her only chance of getting rescued, Fiona mocks Yan Fuk's method from "Where the Legend Begins."

Her letter read as follows:

"To everyone,
Don't worry, I'm only on a vacation.
Hesitate please and keep living your normal lives.
I am on the Island and will be back soon.
Need not worry, I am safe.
Help, okay? Please keep my apartment clean."

The first two lines read vertically revealed Fiona's true meaning of the letter. It was "Don't hesitate! I need help. Worry, please, (I) am not okay." She also hoped that the clue regarding her location and the jumbled and confusing grammar would further allow the Kams to know that she was in danger.

Suet Ching examines the letter, "Oh! Good grief! Dear God! Niece, did you not learn grammar? This letter makes no sense!"

Fiona muffles a reply.

"I suppose it doesn't matter. It gets the message across well enough. Very well. We'll drop it off into your family's mailbox on our way down." The guards tie up Fiona's hands with the rope again. On Gong Gong gets off of Fiona's feet. He pulls down her handkerchief and forces another pill down her throat.

On Gong Gong explains, "This pill will temporarily block your brain's access to your voice and speech. You can't speak for ten days, which is perfect because in ten days, we'll arrive back on the Island. Then, you'll have your voice back." He pulls another pill out of his pocket and forces it down as well. "This is another poison. If you don't get the antidote every twelve hours, then you will die. Don't worry. I have a jar full of antidotes. If you're peaceful and cooperative, I'll give you one every twelve hours. If not, you'll die. Understood?"

Fiona wants to cry, but her tear ducts have been dried out. She was helpless. Her body felt weak and she couldn't speak. She couldn't even scream. She felt her hands being untied and she was being led out of the apartment and into the elevator.

Suet Ching instructs, "Cooperate and everything will be fine."

[Kam Family Apartment]

Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) hands out the family's stack of mail for the day. "Big brother, you always get so much mail! I remember when you were in Shanghai, we always had to forward mail to you! It was so tedious," Ah Yat says as she hands him five letters and a big yellow envelope.

"Thanks," Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) smiles.

Ah Yat shakes her head, "Second brother, all you ever get are bills! You must tell your spending wife to stop shopping so much!"

"We make money to spend it, what's the big deal? It's not as if it's your money we're spending!" Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) retorts.

"Where is Ma Chi?" Ah Yat looks around.

"She went downstairs to check on Fiona," Ah Hong (Johnny Tang) answers.

"Speaking of Fiona, I can't believe what Ma Chi told us today. I can't believe it was all a ridiculous misunderstanding!" Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) sighs. "Fiona made us think it was something big, but it turns out that she was just mistaking everything. To think, we almost mistook the Empress for a villain!"

"Yeah. Sister OK, here's an adoption advertisement for you," Ah Yat gives her a pamphlet.

Gam (Louis Yuen) looks at her and snatches the paper, "Einstein! What are you doing? How dare you act without my consent?"

Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) lowers her head, "Well... last time I went with Sa Sa to the adoption center and I mentioned that I might be interested in adopting. They took my name... Don't worry though! I only told them that I was thinking about it. I didn't sign us up for anything!"

Nim Chi enters the house with a concerned expression.

"Ma Chi, what's wrong?" Ah Nin asks.

"It's Fiona. I rang and knocked on the door so many times and yet she didn't open. In fact, she didn't even yell and tell me to go away. It was as if no one was at home... I'm worried that she might have left and gone off somewhere," Nim Chi expresses.

"Big big sister-in-law is a big girl! Don't worry." Ah Yat assures and hands Nim Chi an envelope, "This was in the mail for you."

Nim Chi opens it up and reads the letter that Fiona wrote earlier. "Huh?" Nim Chi sees words on the paper, but has no idea what the letter is talking about. "What the heck? 'Hesitate please?' Hesitate to do what?"

"Oh my god. Are princesses so dumb?" Ah Yat reads the letter from Nim Chi's hands.

"Ah Yat! Don't talk about your big big sister-in-law like that!" Nim Chi chides.

"I thought princesses were supposed to be educated! Why does this letter sound like it was written by a child? It doesn't make sense!" Ah Yat protests. She takes the letter from Nim Chi and reads it aloud for everyone to hear. They all have the same thoughts as Ah Yat.

"Aiya! So Ah Sing married an idiot. Well, at least Fiona is pretty. A man's worst fear is to marry an ugly woman, isn't that right?" Gam laughs.

"Like uncle, like nephew," Ah Lo rolls her eyes and points to Ying Gei.

"I don't get it," Nim Chi says.

"It's simple," Rose (Kenix Kwok) explains, "Although the letter was written in a most eccentric way... the message is clear. Fiona is not home because she went back to the Island for a vacation. She told us not to worry and to keep her apartment clean for Uncle Sau and Ah Sing. It's simple."

"Gosh! Why couldn't she just write what Rose just said?" Ah Yat shakes her head.

"Well, I suppose it's all right then," Nim Chi smiles.

[Boat]

The view of Hong Kong becomes smaller and smaller as Fiona drifts further away on the boat back to the Island. She was returning to the haunting place where her life began and she feared that it might possibly end there as well. Her tear ducts fill with water. She prays that the Kams would understand her letter and that someone would come and save her. "Ah Sing! Anyone! Please, save me!" Fiona begs silently.
