Seeking Happiness

Chapter 92

the proposal

[Kam Family Apartment, Ah Nin & Rose's Bedroom]

Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) can't help but laugh when Rose (Kenix Kwok) enters their bedroom.

Rose flushes red and glares at Ah Nin. "What so funny?" she demands.

"I'm sorry! I can't help but laugh thinking about what happened tonight. What were you thinking?"

"I took a bubble bath! What's the big deal?"

"The big deal is that you were about to walk around the house naked!"

"Your wife-to-be has a great body! What are you afraid of?"

"I'm afraid that if other men see you, I'll lose you."

"I'm not so unfaithful." Rose dries her hair with her towel and looks into Ah Nin's eyes. Calmly, she asks, "Where were you tonight?"

"I was at auntie's party welcoming her adopted daughter! She's a cutie."

"All night?"

Ah Nin nods his head, "Yes."

"I see..." Rose searches Ah Nin's eyes for any signs of guilt. She sees none. "Anything special happen tonight?"

"Auntie has a daughter, so now I have another cousin! I reckon that's the most life-changing event of the day!" Ah Nin laughs.

Rose cracks a smile, "I suppose you're right." She was disappointed that Ah Nin hadn't told her about his encounter in the rain with Joey.

"Why are you back early?"

"You're not happy to see me?"

"Oh, I am!" Ah Nin hops up from the bed and hugs Rose tightly. "I'm just wondering why."

"There's no point in wasting the company's money."

"So the deal was successful early?"

Rose shakes her head.

"What happened?"

"To make a long story short, Man Gwai Fei was infatuated with Mr. Lau. She tried desperately to reel him in with her forty-inch legs. He was disgusted and said that 'L&G' will never do business with 'Ka Yan' again."

Ah Nin shakes his head and chuckles.

"So," Rose continues, "Why bother staying for a full week when there'll be no more discussions? It'll waste the company's money even more... added to the fact that the whole trip was already a waste."

Ah Nin beams at Rose.

"What?"

"You're so kind and thoughtful. You're always putting others before yourself." Ah Nin kisses Rose's soft hands.

Rose smiles back at Ah Nin. "Actually, I'm not so giving. I came home early because I was selfish."

"Really."

Rose leans close to Ah Nin and says softly, "I wanted to see you sooner." Their lips touch and they start kissing passionately. When they finally break apart, Rose looks into Ah Nin's eyes and says, "Chris, let's get married."

"We're already engaged. You don't have to worry about me running off."

"I want to be Mrs. Kam."

"You will be... soon."

Rose shakes her head. "Not soon. Now. I want to get married."

"What's the rush? I thought we set the date for summer of this year."

"It's good luck to get married at the start of the New Year."

"Chinese New Year is in two weeks! We can't get things done by then. Plus, we have to celebrate the New Year as well!"

"I know. I'm not saying we have to get married in exactly two weeks. I want it to be soon, though... before April."

"Some time in March then?"

Rose nods her head.

"Okay, then. With so many people in our family, we can get a lot done in little time!"

Rose smiles. She felt secure again. Ah Nin was coming back into her grasp and she wouldn't let him go again.

["Tung Mat Yuen" Café]

Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) smiles from ear-to-ear receiving the news from Ah Nin and Rose that they planned to have their wedding in March. "That's wonderful!" she kept saying over and over again. The day she finally waited for was going to come. Her eldest son was going to get married. She would finally sip the wedding tea from her big daughter-in-law. She spread the good news to everyone in "Tung Mat Yuen."

Ah Nin was embarrassed at how flashy his mother was, but pleased to see her so happy. Rose was thrilled that Nim Chi was making it a known fact to almost everyone in Hong Kong that she would become Ah Nin's wife and Nim Chi's one and only "big daughter-in-law."

"This is great!" Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) grins. "I finally have a big sister-in-law!"

"I know it's great that Chris and Rose are getting married, but you seem extra happy!" Ah Hong (Johnny Tang) comments.

"It's because Rose's status in our family will be upgraded from 'fiancé' to 'big daughter-in-law!' There will be someone to suppress second sister-in-law!"

"What about Fiona?"

"She's too meek and quiet! Rose is different. We share something in common, right big sister-in-law?"

Rose smiles, "Of course."

Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) rolls her eyes, "What's so great about being elder? This means you'll only die sooner!"

Nim Chi yells at Ah Lo, "Don't bring such bad luck into this merry conversation!"

"Why get married?" Chan Kiu (Helen Ma) asks while sweeping the floor.

"That's right! Weddings are only excuses for couples to make money off of relatives and friends!" Sek Dai Chuen (Johnny Ngan) pipes in.

"Really? Then I guess you won't have a problem if we don't give Ah Mei any money or presents at her wedding," Ah Lo says.

"Lam Yuk Lo, what is your problem?" Kiu demands.

"You said it yourself. 'Weddings are excuses to make money.' Why corrupt your daughter's wedding?"

"You misunderstood!" Dai Chuen insists. "Money and presents are what make the wedding!"

"I always thought it was the love and the happiness..." Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) says.

Gam (Louis Yuen) comments, "Ah Nin, you are truly a rare man."

"What was that uncle?"

"Nowadays, men are afraid of marriage! What does marriage represent? Commitment! Think about it. You'll have to spend the rest of your life with a single woman! Species like you are extinct!" Gam jokes.

Ying Gei grabs Gam's ear, "Oh, really?"

"What? We're the same species! Ah Nin, Ah Yuet, Ah Sing, and I, we're all good men with common blood! As for Ah Hong... he's always been effeminate, so it's not surprising that he would marry Ah Yat!" Gam explains.

"We need to split up the workload," Nim Chi instructs. "Planning a wedding is big!"

"Especially one for big brother, right? Ma Chi, you're so biased!" Ah Yat teases.

Nim Chi takes out a chart and starts writing down everything that would be needed to be done. She divides each chore up and gives them to every member of the family. She concludes that they would be able to get a lot done if everyone pitched in and helped.

"Wait!" Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen) interrupts.

"What?"

"If we're all going to be busy planning their wedding, who will take care of the New Year celebration?!"

Nim Chi smacks her head, "You're right!"

"So what are we going to do?"

Rose speaks up, "Don't worry! I've got it all covered. I've hired a wedding planner. Also, Chris and I looked at some things already in Shanghai."

"A wedding planner? That's a waste of money! We have a lot of people here. I'm sure we can do it!" Nim Chi insists.

"Big sister-in-law," Sa Sa urges, "We're not young anymore and everyone is busy with their own lives. A wedding planner is a good idea, especially since Rose wants to get married in a month. We can't take care of everything. We also need to plan the New Year celebration."

Nim Chi sighs, "Oh, all right, then. I just wish I could take care of it personally."

Rose gets up and gives Nim Chi a light hug, "You'll still be a part of it as much as you can. Don't worry."

"Ah Nin made a great decision when he chose you."
