Chapter 94

clouded verdict

[Kam Family Apartment]

With the revelation of the true meaning behind Fiona's letter, an explosion erupted in the Kams' apartment. Everyone couldn't believe something so big had happened and they had all let it slip past their eyes and ears.

"Auntie Chi, you're really aging! Your vision is blurred and your mind is slow! It's a good thing you retired before you bought shame to Hong Kong's police force! To think, thirty years ago, you were a policewoman!" Gam (Louis Yuen) folds his arm and tsks.

"You can't blame Ma Chi!" Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) defends. "I read the letter too and I didn't get the real meaning either!"

Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) coughs, "We all know you're not very bright. No need to compare yourself with a woman in her fifties!"

Ah Yat glares at Ah Lo, "Don't tell me you would have been able to figure it out!"

"Of course I could have!"

Ah Yat rolls her eyes, "You say that now after everything's settled. What a load of crap."

"Thank goodness Fiona isn't dumb!" Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) smiles.

"Right, that title in this family will always belong to you, sister OK," Ah Lo comments.

Ying Gei beams, "I have a title? Oh my gosh! Thank you!"

Gam stares at Ying Gei, "Einstein! That wasn't a compliment!"

"A title is a title!" Ying Gei insists.

"Big big sister-in-law is so clever!" Ah Yat comments.

"Clever?" Ah Lo scoffs, "If copying what she saw on 'Where The Legend Begins' is considered 'clever,' then TVB must be a genius for copying their ideas for series and storylines! Being truly 'clever' is doing something that no one ever thought of before!"

"Now that we know Fiona is in trouble, what are we going to do?" Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) asks.

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) jumps up from his seat on the couch and exclaims, "I have to go to the Island! I have to see her."

Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) pulls him back, "Big brother, don't be silly! It's night right now. There's nothing you can do."

"Nothing?" Ah Sing scoffs, "I won't sit here and sleep peacefully through the night knowing that my wife's life is in danger."

Rose (Kenix Kwok) questions, "What exactly happened?"

Ah Yuet nods his head, "Ma Chi told us that Suet Ching told her that it was a misunderstanding while big big brother tells us that Fiona is in danger because Suet Ching is evil... Who are we to believe? Who's telling the truth?"

Ah Sing is shocked at the doubt, "You're going to believe Suet Ching over Fiona and I?"

"It's only fair to be suspicious and give the accused the benefit of the doubt," Ah Lo answers.

Ah Sing looks at Nim Chi, "Ma Chi, you believe me, right?"

"Mothers support their sons, but this time I'm not sure who to side with..."

"Ma Chi!" Ah Sing is exasperated.

"I know!" Ying Gei speaks up. "Let's have a court ruling to see who's telling the truth!"

"The legal system does work..." Ah Hong (Johnny Tang) observes.

"I don't have time for this crap!" Ah Sing sighs. "The clock is ticking away! Who knows how much longer Fiona has to live!"

"Touchwood!" Nim Chi hisses. "Ah Sing, it really is late. Even if you go out now, the chances that you'll be able to do something is slim. Why don't you stay here and help us all understand the situation better?"

Ah Sing sighs, "I guess so."

The Kams' living room was rearranged to look like a courtroom. Ah Nin played the role of the judge. On the left side of the room sat Nim Chi while Ah Sing opposed her on the other side. The other members of the family sat in chairs in the back to serve as the jury. Rose served as Ah Nin's secretary. "Court fall in!" Rose announces. Everyone stands up as Ah Nin made his way to the center of the room, where his judge chair, the family's massaging chair, was located.

Rose reports, "Your Honor, today we are presented with a case in which both parties claim that the opposing party has done them wrong. Yau Nim Chi and Lau Ka Sing are representing for the two parties, who are not present today in this court. Yau Nim Chi is representing the side of Ng Suet Ching whereas Lau Ka Sing is representing Fiona." She pulls her chair out and sits down.

Ah Nin turns towards Ah Sing, "Mr. Lau, what is your relationship with Fiona?"

Ah Sing rolls his eyes, "As if you don't know."

"Mr. Lau! Answer my question otherwise you will be charged for defying the law!"

"Are you kidding me? This isn't a real court case! We're just wasting time doing something ridiculous!"

"Mr. Lau, will you or will you not answer the question?"

Ah Sing gives up and replies, "Fiona is my wife."

"Fiona is a princess. Is this true?"

"Yes, it is."

"Where were you at the time of the incident between Fiona and Suet Ching?"

"I was living at the Imperial Palace on the Island, the home of the two of them."

"From your point of view, what was the relationship like between Fiona and Suet Ching?"

"Fiona looked towards Suet Ching as a motherly figure."

"So they were pleasant together, then?"

"You could say that."

"Yes or no?"

"Yes."

"Can you describe what type of person Fiona is?"

"She is sweet, somewhat naiive, and trusting. She's also a bit stubborn and adventurous."

"What did you think of Suet Ching before the incident?"

Ah Sing shrugs, "I didn't think too much of her because I didn't see her often."

"Did you think she was a 'good' person?"

"I suppose."

Ah Nin motions for Ah Sing to sit down and for Nim Chi to rise. "Miss Yau, how long have you known Fiona?"

"Well, Ah Sing has been married to her for two years now. However, I've only met her a few times during the course of the two years. I've only recently begun to get a chance to know her during these past few months since she started to live in Hong Kong."

"Would you say that you know her 'well?'"

"No, not very well."

"What is your relationship with her?"

"She is my big big daughter-in-law."

"This makes you her mother-in-law, correct?"

"Yes."

"How long have you known Suet Ching?"

"I met her two weeks ago and had a conversation with her."

"How much time did you spend with her?"

"Less than a full hour."

"In that case, you know Fiona better, right?"

"Of course."

"From your knowledge of Fiona, what do you think of her?"

Nim Chi thinks for a second, "She is a nice girl..."

"Is that all you can say about her?"

"I haven't had much 'heart-to-heart' with her. As I've mentioned earlier, in the first two years of her marriage with my son, she was on the Island, so physical distance kept us apart. Since she has come to Hong Kong to live, I've tried to reach out to her, but she's very cold..."

"Cold? Didn't you say she was a 'nice' girl?"

"I did."

"If she's 'nice,' how can she be 'cold?'"

Nim Chi eventually says, "My son wouldn't marry a girl who wasn't good."

"What do you think about Suet Ching?"

"From my conversation with her, she seems sincere."

"From your comment just now, you don't believe she is evil as Mr. Lau has said?"

"I don't know. When I talked to her... she seemed very caring towards Fiona."

Ah Nin tells Nim Chi to sit and for Ah Sing to rise. "Mr. Lau, why do you believe Suet Ching is evil?"

Ah Sing is bitter, "She plotted against her own niece. What more reason do you want?"

"You keep telling us that she plotted. What did she plot?"

"She faked evidence and deceived Fiona's father into believing that Fiona wasn't his daughter... just so that she could get the crown and become the new Island Chief. She did it for power and hurt her blood relative. How much more 'evil' can a person be besides that?"

"How did Suet Ching deceive Fiona's father?"

"I'm not clear on this matter."

"Fiona's father believed Fiona wasn't his daughter?"

"Why else do you think Fiona lost everything?"

"Mr. Lau! Stop being smart and answer the questions."

Ah Sing rolls his eyes, "Yes."

"What evidence was it that convinced him of this?"

"That, I do know. The blood of Fiona and the man who was accused of having an affair with Fiona's mother mixed."

"Testing two droplets of blood in a water bowl for relatedness. Is that correct?"

"Yes."

"Fiona's father believed such evidence?"

"Yes."

"Miss Yau. You mentioned that you had a conversation with Suet Ching earlier."

"Yes, I did."

"What was the conversation about?"

"Your Honor, your question is too broad. I won't answer it," Nim Chi says.

Ah Nin tries not to laugh and says, "All right. Did Fiona tell you why she came to Hong Kong?"

"Yes."

"What was the reason?"

"She told me that she and Ah Sing had been exiled from the Island."

"Did Suet Ching say anything regarding Fiona to you?"

"Of course... that was the point of our conversation."

"What did she say... regarding Fiona?"

"She told me that it was all a misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding? What kind of misunderstanding?"

"A misunderstanding of character."

"Whose character?"

"Suet Ching's."

"In other words, Suet Ching told you that she was misunderstood."

"Yes."

"How does that relate to Fiona?"

"She told me that Fiona's father asked her to pretend to be evil and plot against her because he wanted Fiona to 'see the world' before becoming the Island Chief. She also said that Fiona is still a princess and that none of the conspiracy was real."

"Mr. Lau, do you believe a conspiracy occurred?"

"Definitely."

"Miss Yau, how about you?"

"I don't know. Suet Ching seemed very heartfelt when she revealed these facts to me... but Ah Sing insists that it was real."

Ah Nin turns towards his other family members in the back and concludes, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you have heard both sides for yourself. It is now up to your intelligence and good judgment to decide who is in the wrong and who deserves justice."

Whispers and murmurs could be heard as the members of the "jury" discussed the case among themselves. After a few minutes, Gam stepped forward into the middle of the room and announces, "Your Honor, the members of the jury have come up with a verdict." He clears his throat and continues, "After numerous analysis, we have decided that Suet Ching has been wrongfully accused. We believe that Fiona has only misunderstood Suet Ching. The letter with the hidden meaning was written when Fiona was still under the confusion that her aunt had conspired against her for the throne. It's not convincing to us that Fiona's father would so easily believe an unreliable form of testing heredity through 'blood mixing.' It is, however, very believable that Suet Ching was merely acting upon Fiona's father's wishes and that everyone was only acting. Therefore, Suet Ching has been wrongly accused and deserves justice."

Ah Sing can't believe his ears and screams, "What the hell?"

Ah Nin uses his "gavel," which was really a hammer, and orders silence, "Mr. Lau, if you defy the legal system once more, you will be thrown out of court."

"This is ridiculous! You guys don't have to throw me out. I'll leave on my own will. Some family you people are when you would rather believe an outsider over someone in the family!" Ah Sing is clearly hurt as he slams in the door in everyone's face.

The Kams look around at each other. Gam takes the "gavel" and knocks on the floor a few times, "Court adjourned!"
