Chapter 95

finding a way

[Hong Kong Port]

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) shivered as he stood on the grounds of Hong Kong's port. It was the middle of the night and he was the only person there. The last ship had left the port hours ago. The port wouldn't resume its hustle and bustle until the morning sun rose. Ah Sing paced back and forth and rubbed his fingers, trying to keep warm. He prayed that time would go by faster. Although he was angry with the Kams and afraid for Fiona, these feelings were numbed by the cold.

He crouches down and huddles himself into a ball, hoping that this would keep him warm. He had rushed out of the house so quickly that he had forgotten to bring a jacket. Suddenly, he felt a wool blanket being wrapped around him. He jumps up with a startle. It was Nim Chi (Nancy Sit).

Nim Chi gives her son a smile and tells him to look behind. Couple by couple, the Kams all came to Ah Sing's side. Everyone held a candle and sung a verse from a song. Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) and Rose (Kenix Kwok) began with, "Through the storm and the sun." Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) and Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) continued, "We'll be there." "No matter how big or small," sang Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) and Ah Hong (Johnny Tang). "Your problems will never be a big deal," Gam (Louis Yuen) and Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) carry on. Nim Chi lights her candle and sings, "We're a family and we'll always stick together."

In unison, they said, "We're sorry."

Gam adds, "We wouldn't let one of our own freeze in the cold, isn't that right?"

A smile creeps onto Ah Sing's face. He was touched by what they did.

Ah Nin apologizes, "I was only acting on everyone's wishes."

Rose continues, "Being in this family, we are outnumbered..."

"We thought a court case would clear the matter," Ah Yuet says.

"However, it only made it worse," Ah Yat comments.

"In short, sister OK is to blame! She is the one who suggested that we do it!" Ah Hong points his finger at Ying Gei.

"What? I am not!" Ying Gei pouts.

"That's the last time we're listening to the family idiot..." Ah Lo rolls her eyes.

Ah Sing nods his head, pretending to agree with everything that they all said.

"Big big brother, we'll camp out through the night with you," Ah Yat declares.

Nim Chi agrees, "Ah Sing, we won't let you go through it alone."

"So you guys believe me now?" Ah Sing raises his eyebrow and looks around at everyone.

"When you came home three years ago and told us that you met a princess while in Germany and was going to marry into a royal family, we didn't believe you either. We thought you were lying. However, eventually, the truth emerged and you were indeed going to become a 'foo ma.' Although it's not clear what exactly happened between Fiona and Suet Ching, we will believe you," Nim Chi says on everyone's behalf.

"Thank you."

"The thing about being a family is that you often have to lie and suspend your own belief, doubts, and logic for the sake of someone else," Ah Hong observes.

"I don't agree. That's what friends are for. Family members are honest and critical to one another because they want each other to be the best as possible. In a family, you can't hide," Rose corrects.

"In any case, we're here for you, big brother," Ah Nin smiles.

"Wait! What day is today?" Ying Gei blurts out.

"Yesterday was Sunday, so today is Monday morning..." Ah Yat answers.

"Oh my god!" Ying Gei looks at her clock and screams, "We have work in a few more hours!"

Everyone panics and apologizes, "We'll be there for you... unless we're working, sleeping, or doing something else."

Ah Sing shakes his head as he watches everyone besides Nim Chi leave.

Nim Chi mutters, "They are always like that!"

Ah Sing gives Nim Chi a light squeeze and tells her, "I'm more than content just having you, Ma Chi."

["Ka Yan" Company]

The Kams all had bags under their eyes from their lack of sleep that night. Rose, however, was full of energy. She was going to announce her wedding with Ah Nin to everyone in "Ka Yan" company. Rose walks to the center of the company and claps her hands. She calls out, "May I have everyone's attention please?" The "Ka Yan" employees all crowd around her, including Wong Sheung (Lau Dan).

"I have good news," Rose smiles. She loops her arm into Ah Nin's and declares, "We're getting married!"

Joey's (Bernice Liu) eyes bulge and her jaw drops. She couldn't let her true feelings emerge, so she forces a smile and claps. She already knew that Ah Nin and Rose were engaged, but she hadn't expected them to marry so soon.

Rose extends her hand and pushes air down so that she could quiet everyone. "There's more to it. I want everyone to attend my wedding! It's going to take place in Shanghai. Mr. Wong, I would like to make a request."

"What is it?" Wong Sheung is curious.

"I would like 'Ka Yan' to be on hiatus for two weeks during my wedding celebration. I will pay for any loss or expense by the company because of the hiatus. Furthermore, I will pay everyone the two weeks that they lost as a result of attending my wedding!"

"In that case... it's fine with me," Wong Sheung gives his approval.

Everyone cheers and claps. Ah Nin whispers to Rose, "Don't you think you're making it too big?"

She whispers back, "When a Suen gets married, it is a big deal."

Rose walks over to Joey, who was trying to distant herself from the scene. "Joey," Rose smiles.

Joey's throat was dry, but she manages to say, "Yes?"

"I would like a favor from you as well." Rose takes Joey's hands.

"What is it?"

"It would be an honor if you would serve as my bridesmaid."

Seeing everyone's eyes on her and Rose's beaming face, Joey has no choice but to say, "Yes, I would love to."

"Thank you so much!" Rose hugs Joey.

"Y-y-you're welcome..." Joey's voice trails as her sad eyes turn towards the floor.

"Chris and Rose are so sweet!" Sugar (Yau Ching) coos.

"They are as perfect together as Frankie Lam and Kenix Kwok are!" GiGi (Josephine Shum) comments.

Lily (Rain Lau) pulls Rose towards Ah Nin and places their hands inside of each other's. "You guys are almost married! You can't be separated anymore."

Rose catches a glimpse of Man Gwai Fei's (Stephanie Che) upset face and says, "Miss Man, make sure you come on time that day. I would be so honored to have you attend my wedding!"

"What's so great about getting married? Seeing how you're rushing to get married, I suspect you may be pregnant and don't want to be a single mother! You're sly!" Gwai Fei smirks.

"Chris and I have been engaged for months. We are not rushing at all."

Gam says, "Miss Man has been to so many weddings... besides her own!"

Man Gwai Yan (Celine Ma) drools thinking about her own wedding in the future. She had been in Hong Kong for months, but her search for a husband was going nowhere. She wonders if she was destined to be a spinster. "No! My beauty won't age and go to waste. There must be a man out there for me!" Gwai Yan smiles to herself.

Rose is pleased seeing everyone happy for her. She was even happier when she saw Joey's head bowed towards the floor.

[Hong Kong Port]

"When is the next trip to the Island?" Ah Sing questions the person in the ticket booth.

"What 'island'? You've been asking me this question for several minutes now and I have asked you over and over again to tell me which island you're referring to. Give me the name and I'll give you an answer. I'm not physic nor a globe."

"It's the Island in Europe... with an Imperial Palace!"

"'Imperial Palace?' What are you? Crazy? Stop wasting my time! Next person, please."

"What? I'll call your company and complain that you turned down a customer!"

"Next person, please."

"You heard him, move!" The person behind Ah Sing shouts. Seeing that the person behind him was bulky and with tattoos, Ah Sing smiles sheepishly and steps aside. "I'm never coming here again! Terrible service!"

Nim Chi frowns seeing Ah Sing return empty-handed. "What happened?"

"They didn't know what I was talking about... Apparently, they never heard of the Island."

"Speaking of the Island, whenever we went there, it was always on a royal ship... Does this mean the only way to the Island is by them coming to us?"

"Ma Chi! What am I going to do?"

"What about airplane?"

"The Island has no landing spots for airplanes. The only transportation is by foot, carriage, and boat..."

"What if you go on another boat that stops near the Island?"

"How am I going to get to the Island from there? It is not connected to any mainland. The Island is covered by ocean on all four sides."

Nim Chi snaps her finger. "Ah Sing, why don't we rent a private boat and have someone drive us to the Island?"

"Good idea, but..."

"What?"

"Who's going to pay for it?!"

Nim Chi sighs, "That's right..."

Ah Sing grows excited when he hears his cell phone ringing. To his dismay, it was only Ah Lam (Linda Chung).

Ah Lam asks, "What happened to you? Why aren't you at work?"

"I'm trying to get to the Island."

"To reach Fiona?"

"Yes."

"Ah Sing, if you don't come to work, I don't know how much longer I can cover for you."

"I don't care about my job anymore! If something happens to Fiona..."

"Ah Sing, I know you're worried about your wife, but you can't just leave things hanging."

"Ah Lam, I thought you changed, but you're still the same. You care about business more than people." Ah Sing hangs up his phone. He turns it off and shoves the phone into his pocket. He ruffles his hair and paces, "What am I going to do? How can I reach the Island to save Fiona?"

Nim Chi smiles and exclaims, "Through Ah San!"

["Ka Yan" Company, Bathroom Stall]

Joey was depressed. Since the incident under the rain, she had begun to think that she and Ah Nin would get back together. She believed that he would remember it all and be hers once more. With the news of his upcoming wedding with Rose in the next month, sadness rushed back into Joey. Time and hope were truly gone for her. Not only was Joey going to watch Ah Nin get married, she was going to server as the bridesmaid at the wedding. There was nothing that she could do.

She wanted so badly to forget Ah Nin and move on, but the memories haunt her and a sense of regret and lack of fate overcomes her.

[Sze Corporations, Ah San's Office]

Nim Chi took Ah Sing to Ah San's (Steven Ma) company. Ah San was surprised to see the two of them at his company. He ushers them into his office and tells them to sit in front of his desk. "Ma Chi, how is everything?" Ah San smiles.

"Not good," Nim Chi answers.

Ah San laughs. He teases Nim Chi, "I see, so you only come to visit me when something's wrong, huh? I'm starting to think that this godson isn't important to you anymore! Your family is so big and you have too many people in your heart."

"Nonsense! I love you as much as I do everyone else."

"What's the matter?" Ah San questions.

"Well, we have a problem...." Nim Chi explains the situation with Fiona.

Ah Sing concludes, "I have no way to get to her and she needs my help desperately."

"Ah San, you have a yacht, right?"

"Yes, I do. My father bought it years ago."

"Can I borrow it?" Ah Sing asks.

"Of course."

"Thank you so much!"

"No problem. I'll take you to the port where my yacht's located. We'll also need to buy plenty of fuel because the trip seems very far. By the way, do you know how to drive a yacht?"

"I assume it's like driving a car?"

"In that case, I'll let you borrow my yacht driver as well."

When Ah Sing gets up from his chair, his feet wobble and his vision becomes blurry. His head spins around in circles. He falls onto the floor and faints. Nim Chi bends down and shakes him. She calls out, "Ah Sing!"
